@wanderthisworld975 жыл бұрын
Damn that is a very impressive collection! Re-organizing my DVDs/Bluray is always a daunting task. One recommendation I would make it to maybe leave a few gaps at the end of each letter so as you add to your collection you have a spot ready for them. Maybe on the more popular letters you mentioned (S, T, A, B, etc.) leave a larger gap than the less common letters (O, U, V, W, etc.). But then again you do not have much room for gaps haha. Well done!
@RenePeraza4 жыл бұрын
I finally consolidated my collection into slim cases: single, doubles and multidisc cases, essentially doubling my capacity. Although most of new slim and super slim cases I bought are the DVD size, the Bluray inserts fit into them quite nicely, giving it a letterbox look to the covers. The slimmer spines read just fine, too. Bought colored cases too (matching them to graphics), clear and blacks (that i use mainly for Noir films). I also crafted movie collections into one multi case: The Omen, The Godfather, etc. Like you, I left the Criterion discs as they were, since the look nice and elegant. Only my big box sets and steelbooks get display real esrate. All in all, I like my stuff so much more now! Shelving is at a premium, so had to do it this way. I plastic recycled all my old cases, too!

We buy dvd movies in bulk to resell individually. I asked my handyman husband to build me a big wood shelf to organize these dvd’s in alphabetical order. I have about 550 I recently organized on that shelf and it was a task. I had originally organized them horizontally but sat in my thinking chair in front of shelf and decided to stack them vertically on each shelf so I can read label better without turning my head sideways to read label. So I actually worked on it twice.

After trying to sort my collection alphabetically over the years I simply gave up. I now put every new movie I get onto a "current" shelf which I expand as required. Each "shelf" holds about 25 movies and each shelf is alphabetized independently, plus each shelf is uniquely named. The whole thing is wrapped in a "MyMovies" collection with the location of each disc noted. My collection is 3,211 discs (split between BD and DVD). Now I never have to shuffle and rearrange discs. Sweet. Plus, the whole thing is on my phone AND online so it is always instantly accessible. And my shelf names have nothing to do with movies or movie genres- names are arbitrary. It works. It just works. I do, however, make an attempt to give "shelf" names an alphabetical system. For instance my oldest shelf names are in the "A's", and so on. I've culled quite a bit from my original size (5,000+) so I doubt I will ever run out of names. Plus, at 75 I won't be picking up that many new releases.

Good question: it's one we with large collections have to deal with sooner or later. I try to leave extra space for each letter, enough for say 5 to 10 standard cases depending on the popularity of the letter (more room in S than in Z, for example). If you're still obtaining a lot of discs for your collection , you will have to face the fact that a major reorganization will be necessary every few years, ugh.

My collection isn't as big as yours, I'm only somewhere in the 1900s, I would like your opinion on a potential organization method I've been contemplating for a long time now. DVD binders. But not just any 3 ring binders, I'm thinking the Bellagio-Italia Tuscany storage binders from Amazon. They would look like Olde Timey leather books, but hold up to 96 movies each. The initial organization would be expensive, about $600 (the books don't come with enough sleeves for 96 discs and I'd get a few extra books so that each book isn't jammed full), but I think the end result would look fantastic. I'm a fan of old style libraries full of leather bound books. I love the thought of having blu-ray shelves like yours organized alphabetically or even by genre, but I don't have the wall space for four shelf sets (assuming each shelf set holds 600ish dvd/blurays). Plus as I acquire more physical media I would have to constantly be moving potentially a thousand blu-ray cases to put it in its proper alphabetical place (although this is mitigatable by including some extra space on each shelf). Whereas if I use the binder method, the best that happens is I move one disk, the most likely thing to happen is I have to add a sleeve page, and the worst case scenario is I buy another book and move a few older books. But it would all be contained in one book case. The empty cases can be packed into moving boxes and put in the attic or other storage space. Steelbooks, Criterion or other cases that I like could be kept out on display. I would lose the ability to casually browse the shelves for something that catches my eye to watch or to see if I own the video; although I already use CLZ to keep track of what movies are in my collection, so this isn't a deal breaker. Any thoughts?
@bri14745 жыл бұрын
I have a lot of blurays like you, but I organize them by genre and then within that genre I alphabetize. I try not to mix the genres, because I watch movies almost every day, and I do it based on my mood. I also get a lot of new movies and I'd find it be a big hassle to move the collection each time I get a new movie. I do separate the Criterions, Arrow, Scream Factory, Kino Lorber, Synapse, etc as well though.

Am currently sorting through my collection, but am doing them by genre, only other rule is am keeping series, sequels, reboots, and all that together even if I think they are classed as a different genre (e.g. the original jumanji I put in classic films, but the newer ones I would class as family genre but I've kept them with the original so they are all in classics) just the weird way I'm sorting them out on the shelf.

Watched, The Girl with all the Gifts, again tonight before watching your clip. Movie arranging is challenging. My cases are 2 deep, so adds to the challenge of putting them in order. However, only got about half of what you appear to have. I have all my boxsets together too and that includes say like a sly stallone boxset with demolition man/tango&cash/cobra, i just keep that with boxsets, then i keep all my arrow, eureka, 88films etc films together..then from there it goes to numbers (3:10 to yuma etc) then into alphabetical. The only difference that i do is, is the films that begin with THE, like THE BLUES BROTHERS or THE LOST BOYS, ill list those under 'T' instead of 'B' and 'L'. So i code them BS1 BS2 and so on also i put in which shelve they are on. Like i might have Smokey and the bandit would be like this Smokey and the bandit BS1 S5. I dont separate by genre. Now the other shelves whichh i have 8 those are media center shelves. If i am looking for alien that would be MC2 S3. I dont keep movie collection boxes the only ones i keep star wars and the pink panther collection. For all others i buy bluray boxes and i make my own labels. It's simple and it works for me.
