I am thrilled to have found this video. I have the same type of cactus. It is at least 160 years old. Passed down from mother to daughter-in-law as a welcome to the family. The way it matches your story makes me wonder if mine came from Ireland, County Cork. I'm so glad to know not to trim the roots like a garden perennial. Thank you for this video.

Beautiful plant! I love old plants being passed on from people to people. I have one that is 50 years old, inherited from my grandmother. Regarding your plant, the discoloration on the leaves might also come because it was a bit too cold. Was it in the polytunnel or in house during winter? Schlumbergeras do not really like cold temperature. Also, it might receive a bit too much sun, since the tips of the leaves are red, a sure sign of stress.

WOW I bet your 50 year old plant is a beauty :-D I agree I LOVE old plants that are passed on it makes it extra special :-D this cactus was in the plytunnel during the winter and I think it was a bit below the ideal temp for it as the polytunnel was around 5-7c most of the time, and I normally overwinter this one around the 10c, thankfully it is starting to green up a bit more now as I have put it in a shadier spot in the polytunnel and the new soil has given it a bit of a boost :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from right across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Friday today XXXX

Hi Carla :-D I use a soil mix of loam and peat and grit and perlite at about a ratio of 40% loam and 30% peat and 15% perlite and 15% grit, the roots will grow down into the new soil, I do usually loosen up the roots if the roots are very compacted, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful day XXXX

My flower is already 10 years old, it’s big, it’s blooming beautifully, but for some reason it got sick, a brown net like a cobweb started to root, and no one can tell me what to do with this trouble, this net is already going up the leaves .. I I love this flower very much, but I don’t know how to cope with it. Perhaps there is some remedy for this? Please tell me if you know!!!
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Жыл бұрын
Hi there, so sorry to hear about your plant, I am not sure what it could be but it sounds like it could possibly be 'Dodder' a parasitic cobweb like weed that grows on plants and uses them as their host to live off, the only thing you can do is to completely remove the plant from the pot and pull off all traces of this cobweb like weed, its very fast growing and invasive and may kill your plant if left as it uses the host plant to live off, once removed you may have to keep a very close eye on any signs of the 'Dodder' coming back as it can come back again, good luck with your plant and wishing you a wonderful plant powered Sunday XXX

My Mum has had her cactus for years and it has maybe been re-potted once, maybe twice. It has been flowering less and less over the years now it has stopped entirely. Will a re-pot rejuvenate it or will I just end up composting the entire thing? I am surprised that you did not tease out the root ball. I look forward and thank you to your reply.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kris :-D yes a re vamp into fresh soil would definitely give your Mothers cactus a much needed nutrient boost, I definitely would not compost it haha, a good fertilising too would help to perk it up, sometimes when a cactus stops flowering it can be down to a many number of things, but I would definitely give it a re pot to freshen the soil up, I have made a video on How to get your cacti to flower and I will post up the link here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6jSp3mdotOpmsk good luck with your Mothers cactus and I bet it will be blooming again in the very near future :-D XXXXXX

I have a question its nov first and i have a 2 section piece of thanksgiving cactus plant about a wk ago. so i figured id try water propagating it. My plants are starting to get bulbs now and i checked the water of the two segment piece and it looks like its trying to push out a bulb ( it doesnt have ANY roots yet ) is this even possible. Yesterday i didnt notice anything and today i did so what do u think. Any advice if i is trying to create a bulb without roots????
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 3 жыл бұрын
Hi April :-D thats wonderful news you have a cutting of Thanksgiving cactus, the water propagation method works really well for these cacti, yes its very possible that the cutting is forming buds, this sometimes happens when rooting these cacti at this time of year, the only problem with that is the cactus is sending out its energy to making buds instead of roots, it sounds sad to do, but you would be best to pinch out any buds starting to grow on your cutting, this won't hurt the cutting and instead it will encourage the cutting to form roots instead of buds, and you will most likely get buds next year instead when the cutting has rooted well, I hope this helps and good luck with your cutting, Thanks so much for watching ad have a fantastic new week ahead XXXX
