when rooting in water you can't let the roots get too big otherwise they will rot like you've already experienced. The reason being they are used to growing in water and need careful transition to soil. They have to be keep really wet then gradually back off with the water. Small roots though, willtransitiopn quite easily. These plants are epiphytes so don't really need soil to grow in, that's why the bark is so successful. Hope this helps

I feel the water gives early results, but there's a delay when they get transplanted to soil, while they re-accustom. I tend to water propagate just until they get visible roots, and plump back up, then they go straight into soil

Very good experience. I keep mine in normal potting soil. They do not have a chance of rotting, I usually water them only when they are already crying for help as I forget to water them. They are blooming profusely though.
@CactusCaffeine5 жыл бұрын
“Crying for help”. That’s funny. 😁 I guess the stress is making them bloom, too. I should remember that because I have a tendency to overwater them knowing that they are tropical cactus. Happy weekend Fernanda! ☺️

For those who want to try using only orchid bark, I would recommend a finer grade than you used. Bark is available in fine, medium or coarse. Fine bark drys out slower than coarse.

I have been searching for information on what kind of soil to repot my Schlumbergera in. After doing searches online and also just on KZbin I found this video. This one has what I believe to be the best ideas. It makes sense that these plants would like the bark. I did read that the Christmas Cactus is not a naturally occurring plant. It is some kind of hybrid but it is related to the plants that grow on trees, etc. Anyway, after the blooming season I will use Pine bark to repot it with. Maybe some smaller bark would work better for me since I keep my plants inside our home. Thank for the informative videos!

I believe that rooting in soil, is faster than water, transplanting to soil, because the root structure is different in water, than in soil. When you transplant the cuttings, it sets them back, because they need to form soil roots.

I'm amazed the cuttings didn't rot in water because the leaves touch the water. Also, once potted the plant has to reproduce new soil roots so what is the benefit of rooting in water since those roots won't survive in soil and then you must keep more moist bc they're used to water. The leaves in the bark and soil mix are larger and look like a different shape than the ones in all bark

Either way will work. You may want to enjoy the flower first then propagate. But if you try to root them while they are flowering or in bud, I suggest you take off the buds so that the cutting’s energy goes into making roots instead of making the flower grow. 🙂

I just want to know how you water the cuttings? Is it alright to use spray to water them what will you recommend?
@CactusCaffeine3 жыл бұрын
It is better to water the soil directly until water flows out from the bottom. This ensures that the entire root gets water and not just the top part of the soil. 🙂 Spraying may be done just to increase humidity from time to time.

Your cuttings are looking wonderful. Can’t wait to see them bloom. You’ve done great with them. I’ve had the easter/spring cactus for over a year now and for the first 9 months or so I thought it was mostly dead. It was very difficult figuring out what type of conditions it liked. It’s pretty much ignored for the most part in my north facing living room on the coffee table with a Haworthia. I barely water them so the cactus doesn’t rot. Tho it’s never flowered for me but prob cuz I ignore it. Thanks for the useful advice tho. Maybe I’ll get some blooms this spring from mine 😍. Enjoyed watching 🌵❤️

There is a big chunk of mine that broke off during strong winds one day and it has a lot of buds. I tried to put it in water but I see it deteriorating so I put it straight in soil and it seems to be a little better although it’s constantly looking dry and half dead because it has no roots to take up enough water, but I left it in soil and keep the soil very moist as I don’t seem to have a choice. Am I doing the right thing? Will it survive? Some of the bigger buds eventually bloomed but the smaller ones are aborting/ drying up....
