I know this is years late, but back when the whole Rem confession went viral, there was a famous movie director (his name escapes me and I can't seem to find the reference) who had been watching the series and became ecstatic when he discovered the 'What If' series. A few interesting things about Rem and Subaru that you may not know: . . . . . First, in the one-off short where Subaru does say yes to Rem, the author updates that manga once every year (always on Rem's birthday). Many people in the Re:ZERO fanbase has started to consider that manga as the main canon (which isn't the case, but hey; who knows?). There's actually a part in the manga (the official manga, mind you) where Subaru does in fact confess that he's in love with Rem, but that he's also in love with Emilia. Rem tells Subaru that she would be okay being Subaru's secondary wife, if Subaru would also want to marry Emilia. Subaru responds by saying that he's okay with it, but he'll have to ask Emilia first (note: This is in the official manga. This scene was cut out of the anime (it was after the battle against the white whale (or, in the video; where Rem goes "Alright, but please don't forget m-")). It's really interesting to see that even the author has started to show Rem a lot more love recently, so who knows what will happen! This is late, but fantastic reaction! Love watching your reactions to videos, mate! Definitely one of my favorite reaction channels out there! If you haven't yet; I highly recommend checking out Food MENT (by Shmuck Squad) and Danganronpa Abridged Thing (by Faulerro). Both really good abridged series that I think you'd like! Keep up the great work, mate!

In my case, it's mostly for the memes. But a lot of people thought her speech to Subaru was moving enough to make her best girl. But (and this is just my opinion) since the speech was immediately followed by her rejection, it stood out a lot more to many fans, making her more important than she would have become if the scene just moved on instead.

In the Anime, her character has a ride or die personally, though much of the Anime she was like his body guard until he gain strength later on, he freaking saw her die repeatedly trying to protect him. the other thing as gigguk pointed out his relationship with Emilia seem shallow, where he spent way more time thought the anime with Rem. So in that rejection it was like damn..... you turn down some who died for you, for one else you put on a pedestal for no reason.. that's kind of messed up.

AirierGames You know, I was actually about to call them out on that being bullshit, but apparently, according to the Re:Zero subreddit at least, the contents of episode 1 to 18 is considered to be the prologue of the series despite never being officially labeled as such. It's even accompanied by a title drop, kind of like how in Kingdom Hearts 2, you spend a couple hours playing as Roxas and then see the big Kingdom Hearts 2 logo and realize all that was just the prologue. In my opinion, it feels weird calling such a large part of the series a prologue, but I will say that 18 kind of marks Subaru finally reaching a starting point of sorts where he finally gets his shit together and is ready to progress forward with his life.

@@xenfast130 to be clear, the series is still going on and the main core cast isn’t even complete until Season 2. Arc’s 1 and 2 are made almost like a prologue to get you adjusted to the world, RbD, and some of the major characters. (Note Rem isn’t a major character in the overall story… or at least not yet.) The main plot of the entire series is the Royal Selection but that is a situation that both Subaru and Emilia are not ready for yet… hence why the plot discusses it but we don’t interact much with the Royal Selection until the pieces are in place. Really this is a show that is kinda done a disservice being made in a Seasonal format because it makes people think each Season is a beginning, middle and end of a story when it’s actually more of just the start or as Writers call it - the Rising Action of a story. Think like a roller coaster that just started the incline on the big hill and that’s what Season 1 is.

I would even further argue that she _is_ in fact the main heroine of the show, despite Subaru's interest in Emilia. The show lacked to present any valid reason to his interests in Emilia nor any character development for any of the characters. The only driving force of the series is 1) his love for Emilia 2) suffering. Which as I've explained previously, his love is unexplained. Back to the main topic. Refering back to my previous statements about the heroines, naturally people would be upset over his abnormal decision of turning Rem down.

Honestly, any time someone asks why he loves Emilia, I point them to this scene: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnO3dJSEmMaWibc&spfreload=10 (sorry for terrible quality, it's literally the only one I could find on KZbin) Whether you believe that he should love Rem more than Emilia for her support later is up to you, but having pretty severe anxiety and having gone through depression myself, this scene alone is a good enough justification for falling in love with someone to me. When you're holding everything in and pretty much falling apart inside, sometimes all you want is someone that notices without you saying anything and just lends an ear. Also, I personally think that Emilia actually calling Subaru out on all his bullshit really contributed to him falling in love with her. That said, from what I've heard, something from the light novels that they decided to take out when adapting the anime is that Subaru does actually end up confessing his love to Rem as well only a few episodes after the "I love Emilia" thing to set up more of a polygamous relationship, which probably wouldn't be that weird in a fantasy world

i tend to hate the "i love emilia" thing is the fact that despite risking his life to help and/or save her both of which he nearly dies attempting. the first time he embarrasses her she abandons him. all she knows is this fool came out of nowhere and averted major catastrophic events twice in the same week and he isnt worth keeping around, thats where i have issues. also thats from subaru's perspective about 2 weeks after he started saying he loves her openly
