I'm Canadian and a lot of our charts are an amalgamation of US and UK charts, so we knew a lot of the other hits from these artists. "The Sun Always Shines on TV" was a big big hit for a-ha, it was even used as a theme song for a MuchMusic show.

Yeah, a-ha did not achieve the same success in the United States as they did in Europe; in the US, they only got two hits: Take on Me at #1, and the now oft-forgotten The Sun Always Shines on TV which had a modest peak at #20. Because Sun is mostly forgotten in the US today, that left Take on Me as the band's "true" hit in the eyes of Americans.

Toni Basil actually was a cheerleader at Las Vegas High School. I remember some of these and they are still classics. My two boys still dance to Never Gonna Give You Up. Tainted Love was also featured in the movie Coneheads.

People focus on the one hit part but not enough on the wonder part. If you have a long and successful career in music then you are not a one hit wonder.

Then maybe they should pick songs that are more widely recognised as one hit wonders, rather than a bunch of bands like Soft Cell & a-ha who have 12 & 18 top 40 hits in the UK respectively. Even less successful acts like Right Said Fred, La Roux and Afroman are not UK one hit wonders.

Thank you Izzy for defending Gotye. He didn't really have another mainstream hit, but 'Making Mirrors' (the album with 'Somebody That I Used to Know' on it) was actually his third album and he had plenty of hits on indie/alternative radio before this one. When I first heard him on mainstream radio I was so excited that more people would be able to hear his music, but I had no idea how big that song would get.
