So rather than Western references or inspiration, Howling paid homage to the great Hayao Miyazaki’s classic Princess Mononoke. Jurin was San (Princess Mononoke) and Harvey was evoking the Deer God. Yes there were references to MJ, Hunger Games and American football also but the main nod was to Princess Mononoke
