I grew up about seventy miles from Meghan in Los Angeles County. Our cheap gringo tacos were ground beef, a squirt of ketchup, a little water to make a light sauce, and a mixture of garlic powder , onion powder, chili powder, salt and pepper, paprika, Mexican oregano and cumin. Brown the hamburger, toss in the spice mixture. Squirt in the tablespoon ketchup and pour in a splash of water, and mix together. Fry the corn taco shells in vegetable oil. Fill the tacos with cheese, lettuce, tomato, a squirt of taco sauce, maybe a spoonful of sour cream, some meat and eat. We didn’t need to be fancy or trendy. We didn’t have the money. We were living on a county sheriffs salary and a part time elementary school teachers aide salary. Those tacos helped me get through college by keeping my food budget low. During this crazy inflation, I’ve returned to them.

I can speak to this, we don’t put cumin or oregano in our taco filling, whatever that might be, and we use a variation of Mexican oregano, but again not in tacos and most people DON’T have that in their cupboards unless they are ethnic. Meghan has no idea what she’s saying or doing. 😂

Red onions in tacos? Mexicans usually use white onions. Coconut oil was the rage in California a few years back. So Meghan is being trendy with that one. Traditional is lard but most people will also use a vegetable or canola oil. I‘ll take a Mexican Grandmother’s tacos. Thanks. 🌮
