I think the reason some people complain that the show is too cringey or cheesy is because they're not understanding that the show is meant to be funny as well as dark. Like shows can be dramatic, dark, AND funny which is what this show is. The awkward and cheesy parts mixed with the darkness makes the show campy and weird. I really love it lol.

Yeah but sometimes it's just cheesy and not funny. Many phrases said by Wednesday are clearly what an old man *thinks* Gen Z talks and this is something that bothers me A LOT in shows lately.

I wanna just point out the intentional contradiction in Wednesday's namesake Obviously its stated that she was named after the line "Wednesday's child is full of woe" , but we also know she was born on a Friday. And that same nursery rime says: "Friday's child is loving and giving" So with littlw to no exposition the writers are telling us that Wednesday has more of a heart than should would like to admit

There are so many references to previous adaptions, but the one in this episode that I missed the first time around was the "You're just a little kooky" "I prefer spooky", being a reference to the theme tune! There is of course another theme tune reference later on which I love, but I had missed this one the first time I watched.

To be fair, Piranha's don't typically attack humans or even live animals. Common misconception because of movie portrayals. Also...Stella immediately recognizing Edith Piaf, great taste in music.

I'm from Brazil and in the North (where the Amazon is) there are a lot of cases of people being attacked or even killed by piranhas. It's literally common knowledge. Of course statistics say otherwise, but no one is documenting what happens in the deep jungle, let alone what happened decades or centuries ago. One piece of culture that proves this is the fact that when someone has to move a herd of cattle across a lake, they take a cow that's already weak or hurt and throw them in the river first, away from where they're gonna cross it, so the piranhas get distracted for a couple of minutes and they can cross it safely. After a really short time, all that's left is bones.

There are also people who specialize in studying these behaviors, so I'm not sure saying no one documents these is an accurate statement to make.

I was HOPING you guys would react to this! I've watched this show 5 times already because I love it SO much. Jenna Ortega is amazing as Wednesday, the writing is fantastic (probably because Burton DIDN'T write it), the characters are great, the setting and the cinematography...I just love it, and I really can't wait to see what you guys think as it keeps going. Buckle your seatbelts, but you are in for a RIDE. Fun fact: Jenna Ortega was told by Burton not to blink during the show. So there's a FEW times when you see it happen, but for the majority, her eyes don't close if she's awake.

There are so many more iterations of The Addams Family out there than I think most people, even fans, realize. I used to watch the old TV show when I was a kid and saw the 90s movies and digging deeper into the original comics and some of the other versions, I definitely think the writers of this series took all the other versions and wrapped them into one and added some extras for an updated 21st century version. Very well done imo. As far as the 'outcasts," if you think about it, there is Thing, uncle Fester's 'ability' cousin It an some other odd/supernatural Addams and features even from the original, so all the vampires, werewolves etc. aren't really that out of place.

I never watched anything from the Addams Family universe, but I'm loving this show A LOT. And the fact that the main character is the *best* character, makes this show more enjoyable. Wednesday is just so relatable (when I'm not even a teen girl) and her being so dark compared to the others is amazing. Kinda like Buffy, and it also mixes dark humour, action and drama so well.

How is no one ever mentioning Gwendoline Christie as the headmistress? She was a big reason for me I was so excited for this show to come out because I love her work so much. Obviously every one SHOULD be talking about Jenna who's doing such an incredible job and everyone's gonna be excited about Christina being in it, I just assumed people might notice/mention Gwen more since there surely must be a bunch of ppl knowing her by now through GoT and Sandman (at least), right? They did such an amazing job with this series. I've watched it 3 times despite the fact that the first watch was spoiled for me. It's nice to see the family members more fleshed out. I never read the original comics but I know that the Addams were meant to show how stereotypes are harmful and how the perfect nuclear family could be the real monsters. As the series goes along we get to see how the Addams work as a family.

If I remember correctly from an interview with Ortega, she said she was in Romania for 8 months filming this series. Maybe they went to neighboring areas as well but not sure. I really loved this series and Season 2 hopefully will be soon :).

It seems weird and new at first but I think this show's "outcast" concept actually meshes pretty well with what we've already seen before in the Addams Family franchise (granted, I'm more familiar with the 90s movies than any other incarnation of the franchise). I mean, they've always had Thing (disembodied living hand, however that works), Cousin Itt (is there even a body under all that hair?), and Lurch (always some strong "Frankenstein's Monster" vibes with him) as part of their world. I don't recall most of the family ever being shown to have any kind of powers or afflictions before, but Fester is an exception to that. Fester has always been associated with some sort of electricity based power and he's always been known for his gimmick of being able to light up a lightbulb in his mouth. This show is effectively saying that we've barely scratched the surface of what can exist out there in the world the Addams live in.

I don't know if anyone has caught the very subtle reference to "An American Werewolf in London." The hiker at the beginning is wearing a red puffer jacket/vest and backpack, like the hiker in the old horror film. The fact that he mentions werewolves and is a hiker in basically the same costume is just such a subtle but BRILLIANT reference that I just find so cool! It really doesn't seem like anyone is picking up on it!

The Addams Family originated in the New Yorker as a comic strip beginning in 1922. The. Original show ran from 1962-1964 whereas Lisa Loring portrayed Wednesday Addams in the original series; the actress unfortunately passed away this past January. She was 6 years old when the series began. When Christina Ricci began portraying Wednesday she was 11 years old so Jenna Ortega is the oldest actor to take on this role as she is 20 years old. With this in mind we can see things like Wednesday’s new ability didn’t take hold until she became a teenager. This also explains why she is angsty whenever she speaks with her mother. I admire how you broke down the episode.

This show is a dream for a cinephile like me. There are so many callbacks to the movies and the 60s sitcom. I love going into details like that. 🙂 Especially when they actually use a callback as a plot device. That's all I'm going to say. 🤫 Also, the musical covers are uniformly great. It's simply a brilliant show, overall.

The movie is Made in Romania ,Scenes filmed at the school were actually captured at Cantacuzino Castle in Romania, a Romanian palace built in 1911. The carved stone castle is a tourist hot spot in the village of Bușteni in the Carpathian Mountains.

They did a lot of things right with this show. It's not really teen cringy. They poke subtle fun at the teen angst genre. It's also obvious that Tim Burton has great respect for the original material. There is no sense that this is, despite the humor, a spoof of the Addams family. It's a tribute. The cast is stellar. I'd watch any of the younger actors in their own shows, just as long as it wasn't something from Disney. 😉

I'm a child of the 90s who absolutely loved this series. They did a great job of marrying a new story with the camp humor that the source material began. Jenna Ortega killed it as Wednesday and I loved all the nods to the past movies and even the comics from before ❤️

We will be comparing magical shows set in schools to Harry Potter for at least a decade and that is fair but also not fair, Wednesday is ALOT darker and has different themes. Even though The Addams Family has always been shockingly wholesome the idea that Wednesday would go through a kind of teenage angst is an interesting one. Add to it psychic ability and a mystery you have the making of a fun show.

27:45 James, I am *so* with you, bro. I'm not the biggest Tim Burton fan, although there are several of his movies I do like very much. Even his movies that I don't particularly care for, he is incredibly creative, imaginative and very unique, all of which I applaud. When I read of Burton's involvement with this series, I was skeptical but chose to remain cautiously optimistic. All reservations were destroyed by the end of the pilot episode. This show is deliciously dark but balances just the right amount of light through hilarious black comedy, biting sarcasm and Jenna Ortega's perfect deadpan delivery.

Tim Burton was an executive producer on the show and directed 4 of the episodes. However the showrunners, creators, and head writers are Al Gough & Miles Millar who also created the show Smallville.

I have to say I only started watching this series BECAUSE it was titled "Wednesday," and I thought she was the most interesting character in the movies, for the theme they had going. She always seemed to be the darkest so I was excited. Great choice, and obvious, to do a spin-off series but I was hoping for a little more " American Horror Stories" vibes with the ratings. But Im glad I caught it before it became a trend.
