The look from Austin to Rob was cues. To make sure he he was entering correctly. Its hard to sing duet with a trained opera singer if youre not one yourself. Robs training is why he sounds as smooth as butter especially on "blue aint your color".

This was all Austin's idea and he had to convince Rob to do it. Rob was trained classically in college. He had not sung Opera in over 15 years. I'm so glad that he convinced him to do this. Austin was trained in musical theater but also classically too. Enjoyed watching your reaction to this song.

My introduction to Nessun Dorma (Turandot) was in 1948 on an RCA Victor wind up of Enrico Caruso. There was a number of lyric tenors over the decades but it took Luciano Pavarotti (which is on KZbin) at a concert to bring back the goose bumps. Rob has the tessitura and the tone of a great lyric tenor and Austin is close to tenor altino. I am glad I happened upon this channel with a reactor who knows his stuff.

In an interview with Patrol Gaming Austin said that he really wanted to show off "opera Rob" but Rob said he wouldn't if Austin didn't sing it with him. Austin went on to say that he thought he'd been okay but that Rob had been fantastic. I love the way they support each other and actively promote other singers (such as Brooke Eden, Texas Hill, the Bass Gang, etc.). When you watch Home Free's live videos, watch their hands & their eye contact!

Perhaps you would enjoy Brother with Home Free larping. This video was Adam's idea. Adam is a fervid D and D player who is often the Dungeonmaster. The guys of Home Free are basically nerds so that is probably one of the reasons they are friends with Voiceplay . The thing is that I am not a great fan of country or opera, but Home Free is so talented that I listen to them sing anything and I love it. They could probably sing the dictionary and it would sound great

Fun fact about this. Austin knew Rob was trained in opera. So he pushed for Rob to do this with him. Rob agreed and Austin was so surprised by Rob's tracks that he pushed himself to better match what Rob had delivered. Austin is much mote familiar with musical theater vocalization though he did have some opera training. So basically, Austin pushed further into the operatic style to match Rob's performance. Rob was so incredibly nervous about this as he hadnt sung like this in years and never for the Home Free fans. But it was beautifully done. I always suspected Rob's opera voice was impressive as you can hear it "leak" out a bit whenever he needed the broader sound, like in the Sea Shanty Medley.

It's great to see a reactor who is able to honestly critique a genre they don't particularly care for. The other day, I watched a reactor give a thumbs down to this Rob/Austin video simply because they did not like opera, totally ignoring the quality of the performance. Shame on them and good on you for doing it right.

Yeah, I got seriously dogged in those comments (by the reactors) because I said the same thing! Hah Those guys just rate how much they "like" a song; nothing to do with the actual performance. I have noticed from previous videos that they have VERY little actual musical knowledge and not much of an ear. Drives me kind of nuts. I mean, the whole point of doing these reactions is to open yourself to music you wouldn't normally listen to! And any person who could give this performance a thumbs down is insane. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

The difference between Opera and Musical Theater, is where you compare Rob’s open mouth position to Austin’s tighter projection. Really only a difference in technique. Austin does a solo of “ Bring Him Home” from Le Miserable. That is equally chilling, and Musical Theater. (There two versions out. Look for his solo, with piano accompaniment. In the Live version, he was under the weather, and didn’t use his full range.

If you've ever heard Rob on a live recording (or in person) then you can hear that he has incredible resonance coming from his chest when he sings, especially with the lower notes. You don't hear it at all in their music videos. I'm imagine they toned it down in production with this video too. I can't imagine what he sounds like singing this live. You should go back and listen to his normal singing voice to see the drastic difference between the two. I think that's why everyone was so shocked. Not only does he have a fantastic operatic voice but he sounds nothing like he normally does with HF. Thx for the video! More Home Free.... pleeeease 😁

Big fan of Home Free. Dude, you have SO gotta listen to the different things they do. Tim Foust, their bass...holy crap man. I swear that dude can hit an honest to God D1, and sounds good doing it. Listen to their cover of "Man of Constant Sorrow." Austin and Rob are fantastic, but Tim gets a verse and holy shit dude. I'm a bass, and on a good, warmed up day, I can hit C2. Tim is the shiznit. Also, would be way cool to do a reaction on Colm McGuiness singing "Misty Mountains" from The Hobbit. That guy will absolutely freak you out.

Rob is classically/operatically trained. Austin is trained in theatrical vocals. Another Classically/operatically trained vocalist who does not sing opera is Avi Kaplan. He was trained, and had already received a hire letter from The L.A. Opera House to be their Basso Profundo. He received a call from Scott Hoying of Pentatonix the next day to join them as their bassist in the NBC A Capella sing off. He chose PTX and remained with them for 6 years. Now he writes his own sound as a solo artist.

I've heard Pavarotti do this, of course, but I never expected it to sound so amazing with these two. Rob in particular, really blew my socks off! Just beautiful! ❤ Edit** just wanted to tell you that VoicePlay has an Aca top 10 where they cover that Bad Guy song you were talking about. I have never been a big fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.

I do enjoy country music but not a big opera fan. However, this is the most enjoyable version of this piece I've ever heard. They stunned a lot of people with this. It isn't totally operatic, though Rob's is more so. but that's why I like it I think. It's a kind of crossover sound. from Austin. Well done, boys. I read that Austin made a first attempt, then heard Rob's track and went back and did it again, more seriously. :)

His dad loved opera and he grew up with it. He gave this to his Dad for Father's Day last year. Austin majored in musical theater, and had some classical training. This is amazing. My favorite group for giving a contrasting approach to an iconic song is Post Modern Jukebox. They make vintage covers sound like it's the original. Ex. radiohead Creep or guns n Roses Sweet Child of Mine become classic jazz. Or Aerosmith's Dream On becomes a 60s orchestral big band song Spice Girls wannabe becomes Andrew Sisters

When VoicePlay did Nothing Else Matters, I sighed. I'd lived 72 years without Metallica and now because I truly love VoicePlay, I sat down to listen to NOISE. Boy, was I wrong. I loved it, went off to find Metallica's version. It was good, but not like VoicePlay I was impressed with how much Geoff did to honor what Metallica had done while putting VP's stamp on it. Loved that they were dressed in black, so was the stage, because the album that was on was the Black Album. So now before I turn my nose up at stuff, I'll listen to it, then if necessary, turn up my nose.

You want to expand your exposure to different types of music, have you ever heard of Weird Al Yankovich? He does parodies of hit songs. During the eighties, no singer was officially a star until Weird Al had made a parody of their hit song Weird Al is extremely talented. He can write great lyrics, rap, dance, and sing. Plus he can play the accordion. He never did a song without the singer"s permission. Some of his videos show people who later became major stars before they were famous. Often Weird Al will make you burst out laughing. Some of his videos are also educational. He is unique in what he does Some of his songs;. Living with a Hernia, Aluminum Foil, Amish Paradise , Eat It, Tacky, Fat, Like a Surgeon, White and Nerdy, Word Crimes, Perform this Way

Opera is a lot more fun if you check out the stories they tell first. This is from Turandot. Secondly, check the translation of the lyrics for this. I think you'll appreciate it more. I didn't think I liked opera until I met somebody who'd become a good friend who is an opera singer. It turns out I just didn't understand opera. The music tells some of the most messed up stories you'll ever read.
