I really like how the moment Zuko said that as a firebender he needs to control his fire, Aang was reminded of Jeong Jeong who said the exact same thing. That was the final push he needed to accept Zuko.

Thank you for being so understanding with Katara at the end there. So many people say that that dark twist is really out of character for her and that those moments pull them out of the show, but I love it. I think that giving her a darker side makes her a well rounded character. Nobody is just nice all the time. As a "nice" person myself, it sucks when I express anger or any bolder emotion and people say that they don't like that side of me, since I'm not being quietly agreeable. So thanks.

This, to me, was the most anticipated moment in the entire show. From very early on, it was obvious that Zuko had good in him, and it was so rewarding to see him finally make the right choice and join the Gaang.

The reveal of the Western Air Temple is one of my favorites in the whole show. The unexpected nature (since the rest were "normal" temples), the buildup, the music, and the sheer idea: a spiritual air temple built upside down below a cliff face on the edge of a ravine. Amazing. Oh, and I don't think it's addressed in the show directly but the Eastern and Western Temples housed the female airbenders, and the Southern and Northern temples were for the male benders.

I do love that about Toph, and she has talked to Iroh, she knows a bit about Zuko through him. But Katara gave me chills, Azula, by Zuko's help killed Aang. She can't unknow that, because had she been so nice to Zuko and healed him, they'd be without Aang. Zuko actually went with his speech 🤣. I would have done the same, just rolled up on the group with "You guys are gonna laugh, but I'm good now, and I wanna help you" they'd of pushed me from that temple quick 😁. Meanwhile, the air temples are different... I'd be like not a good topic bro, still pissed about the inventors just having their way with a sacred place. And it was such a breath holding moment when Toph got her feet burned, because Zuko had a right to be afraid. After what he did to his dad, you think Ozai would just let him go? He never wanted him to live in the first place, and if not outright kill him, he wanted his daughter to imprison him. I get nauseous thinking about how indifferently he just says your mom is alive... possibly. Like, did you not love her at all? I would have let Zuko join instantly if I knew even a smidgen of his past. But Katara is a hard sell, you don't mess with "mama's kids". I would have paid to see that awkward first meal between them all lol.

I like how at the Southern and Northern Air temples (the one's ment for the men), Aang has to deal with the physical realities of the war with the genocide of his people and refugees, while at the Eastern and Western Air temples (the one's ment for the women) he deals with the internal struggle of becoming the Avatar with learning about Chakras and accepting a former enemy as his fire bending teacher. I'm not sure what that means, but it's very interesting thematically.

I always sort of looked at it like Zuko was so eager/chipper because that was the first time someone, let alone a group of someones, gave him that. A chance, thanks, even kindness. After his mom did the disappear, everyone seemed to be telling him that he wasn’t good enough. And because of that, he was so closed off to Iroh giving him just that. But now, he’s ready for it, and it’s totally paying off. For once, he’s not shown that it’s a weakness to want that.

I like how you point out Toph's commonality with Zuko in that they both had bad home lives, but it's also true that Toph's first introduction to Zuko WAS through Iroh, who adores Zuko. Toph came in during Season 2. Zuko had a couple run-ins with the Gaang that season, but most of his outright antagonism of the Gaang was over with at that point. The Fire Nation gave up on him. He was doing the refugee thing. His primary conflict with them was in the climax-and Aang and Katara were the only ones who saw him flip-flop, with Katara being the only person who heard his conflict beforehand and got a look at some of the personal suffering his family has put him through. So: Toph's outlook on him to begin with is neutral to sympathetic, and Katara encounters him here feeling personally betrayed. (She has also has the MOST outright conflict with Zuko of the Gaang, with Aang occasionally collaborating with him or seeing Zuko leave him alone to pursue other objectives.) Zuko burning Toph's feet could have been so much darker and more tragic on another show, and it was bad enough here. Zuko is alone again. His father just tried to kill him and knows he's a full-out traitor now. It is not unrealistic for him to be expecting assassination attempts at this point, and Toph took him by surprise. The one person who was ready to trust him, and he crippled her in a kneejerk reaction to his own survival mentality. How horrible he must have felt, and Toph really was incredibly fair to what happened after she got away and calmed down. She understood immediately, but couldn't make the others understand because they have a different perspective. Re: Who is Zuko, outside of his trauma and what has been his mission for the past several years? Determined. Absolutely never, never gives up. Hotheaded, yes, and sometimes says and does things he doesn't mean in a temper. But also a seeker of justice and a protector of the small. Resourceful, observant. Quiet and introverted and a little inclined to depression. Honorable. Never kind, and as hard on others as he is on himself. But always honest and reliable. Fairly intelligent, but nowhere near Sokka or Azula's levels, and with more of an inferiority complex than he should have because of it. More of a loner than any kind of true leader, really, but with the character and good will that could inspire others someday. They bumbled the writing on Aang-Katara-Zuko, really. Aang is the "Chosen One" but only exhibits protagonist star quality in a handful of episodes, imo, and is almost never anyone's favorite character. Zuko serving as a secondary protagonist, or deuteragonist, really, really works. But it means that Katara, who does have leading lady energy, works as well with him as with Aang (whose show it is supposed to be). They look better together on screen, which shouldn't matter but does in a visual medium, and they're often paired narratively in dynamic fire-and-water fights. We kinda like a sixteen-seventeen-year-old better with a fourteen-fifteen-year-old than we do a twelve-thirteen-year-old with a girl of the same age. Zuko makes some sort of flirty banter comments toward Katara in his most villainous stage. He means them to be menacing, but he's not menacing. By the time he says them, we already like him. Then, in the Season Two finale, they have this moment of connection. Now she treats him just like Jet, i.e., like someone she romantically liked and trusted who went on to let her down and betray her. Reestablishing the trust between them is now an important story beat. And the optics of them still work better than the optics of her and Aang, who, again, really isn't as strong of a character. They aren't supposed to be romantic. I like Zuko and Mai and really don't care what Katara does romantically. But visual media and storytelling tropes ally against them.

Love your reactions! So hyped for the rest of the show, literally every episode from now on is a masterpiece! Also, Katara being so hostile is very understandable, but if you look into it deeper it's actually horrifying. Last time she trusted Zuko he betrayed her, and that literally led to Avatar cycle ending. It's not only very personal for Katara to lose Aang, but also terrifying for the world to lose the Avatar. I think Katara blames herself very deeply because she was ready to use this water to heal Zuko's scar and it came to literal seconds to stop her from doing that.

Another reason why Toph is the most accepting of Zuko is she has never actually fought against him. The one time she was involved in a battle with him they were working together against Azula in The Chase. All she knows about Zuko outside of that and her conversation with Iroh is whatever the Gaang told her.

Toph is so petty so often that its easy to forget that she consistently sees things way clearer than anyone else in the gang. Her snark and her sass dont come from a place of actually believing it, but from seeing things for what they are and then actively choosing to be a little shit (i say it with a whole lot of love) about it: the most prominent example being Toph giving Katara shit despite admitting that she doesnt really think that of her. Its her character and personality, not a blind spot of her worldview. And so it makes sense that she sees this situation with Zuko quite differently to the rest of the gang. Toph points out Appa liking Zuko, or the lack of logic of what Zuko is doing if it were actually just a trick. Both facts are there for all of them to see, neither needing a specific perspective to be noticed, but the others dont pay attention to them and not so much in a way of actively choosing to look away but more by being blindsighted: that is why Toph opposes their refusal of Zukos offer. id argue Toph is no stranger to shooting one self in the foot because of attitude or resentment or pettiness, but when she does she does so knowingly. Refusing Zuko here is shooting their whole effort in the foot but while refusing to admit the value of what they are pushing away, refusing to see the full picture. and so Toph calls them out. not because of their justified resentment of Zuko, but because they dont see, and shes right

IMO plenty versatility shown across the series or even only ATLA. So just focus on one of the 4 bending styles and master it. You sure find an application others didn't even think about. That's how bloodbending became a thing and likely sand bending as well. Woodbending would be nice - closest to that is Huu from the Foggy Swamp tribe. But not dry wood bending shown. No one seems to know if that is Earth or Water element. When Earth people on forums say that it's likely even more refined than Toph does, being on biomolecular level.

Hey, I love your movie reactions, and I just subscribed to this channel as well. I'm not the biggest into anime, but there is one that I would LOVE to see you guys check out. It's called RWBY. RWBY is an American made anime originally created by Monty Oum (who has since passed) and produced by the animation company Rooster Teeth. Monty was well known for his fighting choreography, and the fight scenes in RWBY are second to none. It can be a little hard to get into, because in the beginning couple of seasons they didn't have a big budget and so the animation can be choppy in places and the voice actors are still learning about the characters as we are. But from season 3 on, they get more budget, they know what they're doing, and the story really takes off. RWBY currently has 8 seasons (called volumes), with the 9th season on the way. Based on how the show is structured, I personally think there are supposed to be 12 seasons, but I may be wrong so don't quote me on that. Additionally, each season of RWBY has an OST with 7-8 original lyrical songs on it, and if you guys wanted I would love to see you react to the music too. It's not necessary to understand the story, but the music of RWBY adds emotion and character to the show that isn't always touched on if you just watch the show alone. I could write pages on why you should watch RWBY, but I'll spare you that. I just really love the point of view you guys bring to your reactions, and I would love to watch you see my favorite show. Thank you guys for all you do and I hope you continue to do well and create quality content.

I love this episode and I really love Zuko's journey but also Katara's because Season 1 Katara would have never made this threat but it totally makes sense for the character and the threat wouldn't hit as much without all their history together ! I feel like anyone would have done the same Zuko did. I mean you hear of accidental shootings because a family member will come over unannounced like LATE at night, to the point the home owners will get spooked and fire a shot or punch them. Sometimes it's a warning shoot and other times it's accidentally because they hit a vital spot by accident. Like if your gonna go visit someone you should speak up or at least let them be aware your there.
