Unironicaly the fire nation is probably best off. Air nomads completley wiped out. Earth kingdom collapsing or corrupt af. Water tribe divided and sexist. Fire nation bestbof but leading the war effort so.

One thing that I find really interesting is that the Fire Nation is very much against dancing like we see in the episode where Aang goes to school. Considering that this form is called The Dancing Dragon it makes you think that maybe the Fire Nation banned dancing because it has ties with the true meaning of firebending

Maybe, but i think it's more likely that the writer was trying to come up with a plot and Footloose was on in the background. By the time of Sozin, the Fire Nation was an established culture with its own tradition distinct from the Sun Warriors.

@@mathies3598 In the 2nd season episode Bitter Work, Iroh explains the four elements to Zuko and the national characters of the four nations, and he says about the Fire Nation:: "Fire is the element of power. The people of the Fire Nation have desire and will, and the energy to drive and achieve what they want. " And we see firebenders throughout the series who aren't filled with rage, like the entertainer in The Deserter or, for that matter, Master Jeong-Jeong himself. We see the same sort of things in the comics and the books. The people of the Fire Nation are portrayed as ambitious and proud, but not necessarily as rage filled. And even though Roku gets angry, i wouldn't say he's filled with rage either. So, really, i don't think that Aang is right when he tells Zuko that. I think it's more that Zuko is consumed with both guilt and shame and needs to try to find some way to be at peace with himself.

Zuko dances with the red dragon but face the blue dragon at the judgement. In Zuko's nightmare, the red dragon is Iroh and the blue dragon is Azula. Iroh has always been the one teaching Zuko, but facing the blue dragon here is like facing his fear that he will never be as good of a fire bender as his sister. But the masters judge him worthy. The attention to detail is amazing!

I think it's really interesting that you wanted the dragons to talk. Animals don't seem to talk in this world except for when Aang is tripping balls. We even see Roku with his dragon, and Fang doesn't talk. I think that would be very shocking to hear an animal talk, even if it was a cool dragon.

I kinda like that they don't talk. There's a lot you can get from the body language of animals - there's no real reason for talking because you can understand all you need to know from the animal's body language.

Honestly this shows that Jeong Jeong wasn't the right teacher for Aang. He said fire was only destruction, but the Sun Warriors realized it was also life. Think of how much civilization has developed purely from fire.

Anyone else feel like Aang and Zuko should have been really vague about what happened? They were told not to tell anyone about the dragons, but they came back and immediately told 6 people. I'd understand maybe letting Sokka and Katara know what actually happened, but the others too?

I know it sucks to have Katara being a big jerk to Zuko, but it's kind of the kick in the pants he needs, almost? Like she acting out of her and distrust, but she means well and in her own way she seems like she's starting to mother Zuko already in a way, being all teasing this episode, and treating him like a kid she has to watch over sort of. I really enjoyed that aspect of her character too. No spoilers, but Katara and Zuko will talk again eventually.

Back in the earth kingdom when Zuko is going through his metamorphosis fever dreams he sees these dragons. One representing the light within the other the darkness and consequently who he associates with each. Have always loved this episode.

The Dragon dance is so cool. It shows how the current fire nation doesn't fire bend with the right spirit. I love that trope with magic where there is an older, different, lost way that no one uses anymore. Zuko, Aang, and Iroh may not be the strongest fire benders, but the Sun Style may be superior because it acknowledges all aspects of fire. A very nice upgrade for Zuko and the best technique Aang could learn as a pacifist.

It's pretty cool to me how quickly Zuko's anger leaves him now that he's doing the right thing. He can still be a bit of a tough guy as a teacher, and he's never going to be Susie Sunshine. But he's at peace with himself and ready to be friends immediately with the others, though they aren't as ready to accept him. He and Aang work together particularly well. I'll look forward to the next releases!

If you read Zuko's rage as response to an injustice -- the fact that his father will never love or respect him -- it makes sense that a lot of it has ebbed away now. Not all of it but a lot of it.

I love this episode! Ever since Book 1, we were mostly given the negative aspect of firebending because of how the benders use them for violence and dominance. But this episode gives that element a more positive light and amazing lore with the Sun Warriors and the dragons’ ancient art of firebending. So yeah, this episode is a pretty big deal, for the firebending lore and the development with Zuko and Aang.

I love the connection between firebending and dancing already just because at the base of it, flames dance Also I'm honestly glad that the dragons don't talk Sky Bison don't talk either, nor do the Badger Moles or the Moon and the Sea (well, technically the Moon does talk now, because it's Yue X'D) And remember that we've met a dragon before, Roku's animal guide in the spirit world, he didn't talk either, but he was able to give Aang visions

This episode is super important at showing firebending in a light we really haven't seen in the show. Which is great because in the real world mastery of fire was absolutely necessary for our species becoming what it is today, to have light, heat, to cook food, make tools eventually to make steam engines. All we could not do without fire and it kind of parallels what we see in avatar, the fire nation is the most advanced nation technologically and while they use that for evil its not in of it self a bad thing.

I think the dragon's talking could have worked but I think it would have to be one of those Zuko & Aang 'hear the dragon's thoughts in thier head but their mouths don't actually move' type deals like what sort of happened in Zuko's fever dream or how most of the zodiac seem to communicate in Fruits Basket because animating animal mouths to match human speech often comes across as awkward or silly.

Everyone has an evil side the earthbenders were the previous cycle about 150-200 years prior to this they were bad and also there was kuvara from korra. Thrn theres bloodbending and firebending in this series. And airbending theres breath bending we see in korra.

Air benders could gank a person in a heartbeat, steal your air right from your lungs. They wouldn't do that, but if it came to it... 👉👈🤫. It is a great episode, and that they showed Zuko's normalcy I mean, look at how he's comfortable with them and not just brooding like he had when he returned home. He was living under that lie and an assassin to make it otherwise he could have relaxed but he was still pent up. Our guy's giving and taking compliments however sorta the compliment may be 😁. No spoiler but I can tell you, next episode will run this one over and that will be your favorite. I think the writers might have wanted us to feel the awe of not being told how to feel like Aang and Zuko so the dragons didn't speak. That or they had momentary writer's block

It's a mix of various cultures. Sun worship was an essential part of almost all older cultures, and continues to be so in some of them. In the present day, as far as I know, it is only alive on a large scale in Asia. There are some scatterings alive in the middle east, Africa and South America.

Remember iroh in The first or second episode? Whem he was training zuko he said " the strength of Firebending comes from your breath" cause to a dragon, bending fire is as natural as breathing and for them creating fire is not meant for war or battles, it simply Who they are and what they do. Its their nature. Iroh is in so many ways like a dragon. He is wise, brave, honorble, extremly powerful, yet only desires to be Who he is and do what comes naturely to him. Iroh is not The dragon of The west because he defeated a dragon, but because he is The embodiment of a dragon.

Now that Zuko has been accepted on the group it's now time for the Zuko-Gaang bonding tour, starting with Aang as they learn the core of Firebending, not only a key journey for Zuko to find his feet but Aang to no longer be hesitant to use Firebending

I think this is one of the most important episodes in the whole show. I'm a Slytherin and yeah, we get a really bad rep because of a few (very vocal) bad apples. But I think it's so important to understand that every house has potential for evil, because what puts you in your house is either heritage or a set of traits which on of themselves are neutral, it's HOW you use them that defines you. Like Slytherins the Fire Nation isn't all bad but are held back by tradition and the Fire Lord who is abusing his power.

If you remember in Zuko's fever dream in book 2 Iroh was the red dragon while Azula was the blue dragon. Then when they showed Roku and Sozin's backstory you could see that Roku's dragon was red and Sozin's dragon was blue. Finally in this episode, it shows Zuko dancing with the red dragon. I don't know if that was 100% intentional or if they just did it that way because red matches Zuko better and blue matches Aang better (color-wise) but I thought it was a cool detail. I also love the little brother/big brother dynamic between Aang and Zuko this episode, it's really wholesome and somehow feels natural after all they've been through. I think Aang just tends to think of people who aren't his enemies as his friends, like when he talked to Zuko in the Blue Spirit episode, when he called Jet his friend despite their history or when he trusted Iroh enough to ask him for advice about Avatar stuff

The point of each of the elements is that their central ideology has both a dark and a light side. Air is the element of Freedom. Freedom can manifest itself as peace and acceptance. But, as Aang often shows us, it can also prompt one to avoid taking responsibility and become passive. Water is the element of Change. Change has a light side: water benders can heal--changing the world in a directly positive way. But Water is also dangerous and through blood bending, a water bender dominates another forcing change on an unwilling participant. Earth is the element of Substance. Substance holds a profound respect for tradition and the Endurance of the earth benders make them difficult to conquer. However, Long Feng and the Dai Li also demonstrate that tradition can become hidebound and a terrible weight to carry for all that fall under its burden. Fire is the element of Power. Fire benders are marked by their passion, their goals and their drive to achieve (this is why they also happen to be the most advanced of the four nations). But passion can take many forms: both of love, devotion and protection of the innocent and anger, rage and hatred. The reason the Avatar is so powerful isn't simply because he can master bending the four elements but because he must expose himself to different ways of viewing the world. This both elevates the Avatar's perception making him the conduit between the mortal realm and the spirit world and grounds him to the nations he is meant to serve. It is the mastery of the IDEOLOGIES reflected in the elements that make the Avatar so powerful.
