I remember watching the 4kids dub on Toonami UK back when it premiered, me and the only other weeb in my school used to play Smash Melee, Kirby Air Ride, and watch anime at his after school, and we saw the ad for this probably during either Beyblade or DBZ, and were well hyped.. he liked the dub, I couldn't stand it and I swore off One Piece. Then I started reading the manga on OneManga cuz I was caught up with Naruto and bored.. been reading it weekly for the last 18 years. Looking back, the dub is hilarious. It's like a kid-friendly abridged or Ghost Stories dub with the absurdity of the edits. Also the One Piece rap is a certified banger.

I still remember this dub used to anger the hell out of me. Admittedly, after finding out 4kids had no choice but to take on this series in order to acquire Ojamo Doremi, I'm not as angry at them as I used to be, but it's because of this dub that so many people thought the original version sucked and refused to give it a chance back in the day. Thankfully, with those times behind us, I can now see this as what it truly is, so bad it's entertaining. Probably my favorite is 'HE'S MADE O' RUBBAH!' Though I have to admit, I forgot they actually showed Alvida's cleavage when her new form was revealed considering they always went out of their way to hide cleavage in this show, even going so far as to erase it whenever a female character wore a bikini.

The direction wasn't good and of course the writing but getting Marc Diraison (The voice of Guts in Berserk (1997)) was arguably an even better casting choice than Christopher Sabat. (And I think Sabat is fantastic as Zoro.)

4kids was the only way I had to watch one piece back then. It legit made me hate it. Took me 15 years to give it a second chance at a friends behest. Glad I did cause I love the real one, the 4kids was rough though.

@Kuzamer sounds far too old, and people have got used to the voice by now but even though 4kids had terrible lines, Marc made zoro sound amazing from the get go and hes literally the one voice that nearly everyone who watched the show back then wished came back. With actual proper lines, no comparison.

@@wingzero2348 I think he sounded fine to me. My main issue with Marc is that his voice wasn't quite as deep as Zoro's in the Japanese version. Sabat probably wouldn't be my number one pick for Zoro. I think Ace's VA, Travis Willingham, would have been the better option. But yeah. As good as his Marc Diraison's acting is, I think I prefer Chris Sabat's Zoro voice.
