I actually DO really hate romances in books because more often than not 1. That's ALL the story becomes about and forget about the fact that they're held captive by cannibalistic pirates, but hey at least we know how much she loves the way his eyes sparkle in the moonlight. 2. They make dumb as hell and unrealistic decisions for the person they love that puts them in avoidable situations even though they just met 5 pages ago aka "insta idiot", a byproduct of insta love

I think one of the main issues with Celaena’s character is the intent behind it. Theoretically, a character that is a brash, impulsive, egotistical assassin would be a fun character to read - if those flaws were acknowledged and they impacted her relationships with other characters. Instead, those characterizations were just thrown out there but don’t impact the plot in any way. You can take away those traits and everything would still happen the same way, meaning that Celaena was written that way ‘just because’ and it shows. I feel like it is bad writing of a potentially interesting and multi-faceted character, and it also doesn’t help that the ‘heroes’ and ‘villains’ read pretty much the same way. It’s just sub-par writing 🤷🏻♀️
@BookswithEmilyFox5 жыл бұрын
1000% I like unlikable characters but she wasn't written that way. I don't like the idea that we have to read 10 books for a character to grow since plenty of other books are able to show some within one book... There was potential but it was a frustrating read!

Here is my 2% about When Dimple meet Rishi . It's promoted for it's diversity and how people should read it because of it's representation of Indian-American and as if this book is kind of revolutionary or new in the literary world . Here is a thing , have these people heard of Jhumpa Lahiri ? The Pulitzer winning Indian-American author who writes about Indian-Americans . So if you're so interested in reading an Indian -American book why not pick up one of her books which have been around for decade. So it's not that people were interested in our stories , they only got interested when someone sent them a copy . Wanna read about Indians or Indian-Americans ? ask people like us

I really did enjoy the Mara Dyer series, but I don't think the first one is the best. The thing with Noah claiming Mara isn't like other girls is because they have complimenting powers and he "saw" her before he even met her. i totally agree with you on the the love triangle thing in the selection series and the hunger games. The thing that kinda made the love triangle acceptable at the beginning in the selection series was the fact that she was together with aspen or whatever his name is first before she came to the palace, and was clearly still in love with him even though they'd broken up, so i think that the love triangle actually developed relatively naturally, but i disliked homeboy more and more because the author kept the love triangle up way too long. with the hunger games, the complete introduction of that katniss-gale-peeta thing was so forced (hell, i also thought her romantic love for peeta came kinda out of nowhere)

I tried to read the Throne of Glass after NUMEROUS recommendations and I felt the same exact way!! So full of herself and overly confident. Very 2005 fanfic feel. :/
@TKDDLJ095 жыл бұрын
Why aren't women allowed to be confident and full of themselves? What is wrong with that? For me it was refreshing after reading about those shy "ugly" girls who everybody found so beautiful and have no backbone. At least Celaena knows she is hot and worth something. I never understood why it isn't allowed for a women to say "Hey, im good at this, im actually the best and as a bonus I'm hot ass fuck" I want women to be able to do it in the same capacity as men.
@bookedbookshelf66595 жыл бұрын
@@TKDDLJ09 The problem is that arrogance looks good on no one, man or woman. And this is not an attack on your tastes, we just have different opinions of what reads well and that is okay! Love what you love. But, for me, arrogance of any kind from anyone in the first twenty sentences of a book is unattractive because I don't enjoy main characters who are arrogant and full of themselves off the bat. This isn't an issue of sexism, it's an issue of bad writing. Show don't tell is one of the biggest rules of writing and it always feels better to discover a bad ass on my own rather than having the character thrust their bad ass card in my face. Show me the main character is a bad ass, give me evidence to lead me to the conclusion on my own, don't have her tell me how amazingly godlike she is. I have no issue with her physical looks and my comment had nothing to do with her being attractive or not, because attraction is subjective and hot people are a thing that exist.

The only book I read out of the ones you showed is The Gunslinger (King is my favorite author). I re-read it last month (1st time was more than 15 years ago) and was curious if it would really be as confusing as you said in your wrap-up last year. Honestly, I wasn't confused, especially knowing that this is the 1st book in a series, so naturally some things will be explained later (but by that I don't mean you have to read them all to enjoy the first one). And yeah, the writing is a bit 'experimental' shall we say but still skillful and enjoyable (for me at least). I didn't find the story confusing but rather intriguing, gave the book 4 stars and am now re-reading the 2nd one. Too bad you didn't like The Gunslinger, but hey, it's not like there aren't any more Stephen King books to choose from ;-) Enjoyed the video!

I love this video! The only one I respectfully disagree with is The Gunslinger. I wouldn’t give it 5 stars, but it was my introduction to fantasy. It was definitely slow, but somehow I persisted. I have only gotten up through Wizard and Glass in the series, but I plan to finish it at some point. I agree with you though, that you can totally read other Stephen King books without reading the Dark Tower series. If you do read the Dark Tower, there are Easter eggs, since it is the Multiverse, but I’m only just finding that out in the past year. (I read the Dark Tower books years ago, over a decade ago I think, and hadn’t read much if any Stephen King other than that). The second and third books in the series are much better than the Gunslinger though.

I don’t know how come i ended up here, but it’s like the first time i hear a young girl (mind you I’m in my 30’s) saying she doesn’t like The throne of glass, i personally haven’t read it, i tried few pages and turned it down, basically for the reasons you already mentioned. It’s not that i don’t enjoy juvenile literature but i don’t get all the fuss about Sara J Maas, not my cup of tea

Have you ever read 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami? Cause boy the way you talked about that Stephen King's book reminded me of the confusion I felt when I read 1Q84

I’m not even going to try and contradict the stuff about throne of glass, because I know they are all true and yet I still like it. *shrugs* This was hilarious either way

For the few that I read, that you covered, I completely agree with you. The Attachment creeped me out so bad. The Selection was one of those books that I got sucked into but don't think I would ever read it again. I hated the dark tower series.

I really like throne of glass but I had a lot of fun and laughed a lot watching your review,people shouldn't get that mad when someone doesn't like your favourite book,lol.I also love your channel Emily,I'm gonna start reading sci-fi because of you!

I’m a huge King fan and I HATED The Gunslinger. It made zero sense. Was super confusing. Why would I read further when the first book was written like he was high on acid when he wrote it??? I donated the book, and I will never read that series. Love a lot of his other books, but that series is a hard pass.

My husband likes The Dark Tower series and has recommended that I read it; however, he’s also really honest about how uneven the series is. He loves books 2-4, but he thinks the final 3 books go off the rails. And he’s straight up told me that the first book is bad (bad writing; bad pacing; etc.) - that I have to just “get through it” if I want to read subsequent books.

Hahaha I HATED Throne Of Glass and the "she wrote it when she was 16" argument pisses me off because I'm like, This is a published book. I don't care if you're 16 or 61. Published books should not be crap. And on the topic of her being malnourished and stuff... she's probably bone thin with rotting teeth and hair falling out (which is what happens when you're malnourished) and yet she's still the most beautiful girl ever. And I'm just like 🙄🙄🙄 (I actually finished the series. Throne Of Glass was shit but Kingdom Of Ash was genuinely one of the best books I've ever read.)

Cori Ilardi S.E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders while she was in high school, and it’s infinitely better than Throne of Glass. That’s why I HATE the ‘she was 16!’ argument.

@@evies.1018 Omg the Outsiders is one of my faaaaaavorite books. And I totally agree! Because, regardless of how old you are, publishers and editors should make a book ready before publishing it!!

I LOL and cried during this video!! Especially for the Attachment, Altered Carbon, and The Cursed Child (calling HP a Douche Canoe 🤣). I love your “don’t care” French Canadian & your “I’m sorry” Canadian attitude 💗 I’m a Westcoast Frenchie (born & raised) and truly appreciate your humour. J’adore énormément et tu es amusante comme animatrice 👍🏻 Keep doing these videos, it had me in stiches.

I'll admit... I couldn't even finish The Gunslinger/Dark Tower book one like... when it hit a flashback within a flashback?? Like just no... no sadly it has put me off anything else by him (and I'm not a fan of horror so that rules out a lot)

I've seen the Cursed Child play; it was fun to watch because the effects were cool and there were funny moments, but there was just the teensy problem that the plot point on which the whole story was based was utterly nonsensical and absolutely not in keeping with anything we were shown in the actual books. Ps the tinfoil hat is back and I am here for it ❤️

I agree with your opinions on The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. I don't know if you have read the rest of the series, but they did give an explanation for the "insta-love". Kind of. But there were so many tropes I hated in that book. Especially during the beginning half.
