One of Kanami's guitar heroes is Carlos Santana. The song "Thrill" was their 1st release, but it was a B-side to the song "Matador of Love and Passion". Matador is a very good song with a strong Spanish feel to it, Carlos would be proud. It was a wise choice though, for their 1st MV to be Thrill. Band Maid might of not made it if they went with Matador. Choose Me was one of the first few songs I heard and remains a favorite. If you have Netflix, there's a movie called "Kate" where the Maids make a cameo in a club scene playing this song. 🤘

The story of their formation and success is truly worthy of a full length film. Thanks for that honesty about the inner battle over their imagery you had when you just couldn’t click to watch. It’s because music holds a special meaning for you and you wanted to choose them for the right reasons. I had that same inner monologue. There are two types of what Band-Maid call "The Gap" in their performances. The first definition is Miku's (rhythm guitar, backing vocals, main lyricist, unfeasibly beautiful woman, etc) which she had when she worked at a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create cognitive dissonance or what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The second use of the term is by Kanami (lead guitar, song composer) who once explained it as "The Gap is about verse and chorus. In most Band-Maid’s songs, the verse is usually made for the instrumental part to shine, to show case musicianship while the chorus, in contrast, is made for the vocal part and the melody to shine. This ‘gap’ provides an interesting journey for listeners when enjoying our songs." I see a new fan in your appreciation of their supremely excellent musicianship and your joy at their performances so subscribed to watch your journey down the Pigeon Hole and into their huge back catalogue and, of course, their live performances, where they shine brightest. I've been enjoying live Rock and Metal since the late 70's and Band-Maid are making the best music I've heard in decades, certainly for the whole of the 21st century.

The issue with the maid costumes and 'sexy' is a standard Western hangup ... I'm not saying that the Japanese don't sexualize or objectify women, but they have a much more 'nuanced' take on it ... the Japanese have the concept of 'Kaiwaii' which most westerners consider the equivalent as not only being 'sexy', but 'young and sexy', and that's not the real use of the term in Japan and can have, and usually does have a far weaker connection to 'sex' than we westerners usually take it to have (that's a 'projetion' by Westerners as to how they look at females and what you might expect from them in their roles of maids in a maid cafe. No judging, back in 2013 I had a similar take on the Japanese Kawaii scene, then I discovered BABYMETAL and the rest of the 'exploited' females in Japanese music and quickly changed my mind on how much my western perceptions of this scene actually misaligned with how the Japanese saw this subject. I don't think having this 'preconception' is a bad thing, unless someone holds on to this preconception even after they discover how things actually work there.
@JohnnyReacts15 ай бұрын
Interesting. I understand some of what you say, however, I had a Japanese girlfriend when I first moved to Japan, who used to wear a maid's costume and liked it because it made her look sexy, her words. I also have many foreign friends in Japan and none would say kawaii means young and sexy. We use it as cute. I personally think there is nothing wrong with the word sexy, I guess it depends upon how it is used. Also thinking about it, when I was back in the UK I taught several Japanese students who did cosplay and they would always describe their costumes as sexy. Maybe we Westerners see the term sexy as negative, however, I have never felt that from any of my Japanese friends. When I used the word sexy I meant no disrespect to these wonderful, talented ladies. Thanks for your comment, interesting discussion.
@RetiredInThailand5 ай бұрын
@@JohnnyReacts1 Did you examine what she meant by 'sexy'? I'm betting if you both sat down and had an in depth conversation of how you defined the words 'sexy' and 'Kawaii", you would find that there are differences in what specifically you and her were describing. Remember, the Japanese have many various 'street fashions' that most Westerners would just lump in as "Kawaii" (Katajuku, Gyaru, lolita, and various 'versions' of Kawaii itself ... Yami, Yume, etc) Your friends in Japan are not exactly the people I am talking about when I say it's a stereotypical Western take on the subject. I am not implying any 'negative' or 'positive' implications (there may be some, but that's not my point.) My point is that the take you had on Band-Maid and their costumes is not an untypical western take ... that's not a knock on you, or even western takes on Japanese culture, it's just a reminder that when dealing with other cultures, it's not always a good idea to apply your values and sensibilities, formed from your Western cultural upbringing, to another culture's values and sensibilities. When I first saw BABYMETAL (my real first encounter with the Japanese rock/metal scene) while I was stunned with the music and presentation (Metal "theater", of the best kind) I was feeling uncomfortable watching young Japanese girls in 'sexy' (a popular Western take on the costuming) dresses ... as were a lot of people who when reacting to them for the first time admitted being a little bit 'creeped' out. I'm not saying Japan, when it comes to young ladies in 'sexy' situations is all innocent ... far from it, but the Japanese have a much wider range (or maybe a more fine grained range) of though and opinion when it comes to this subject ... that tends to 'trigger' a western minds more 'black and white' take on children and what is considered their 'sexualization'! Some of it is more tolerant than we have in the west and allows for more 'creativity' and freedom in how women can present themselves, and some of it goes way over the deep end and results in real exploitation (which is why I don't judge 'westerners' when they make the black & white jump to a conclusion ... one that I myself tended to make before I took a look at how a different culture might have different values or range of values. :-) no criticisms, just expressing an opinion, which could be right, or could be wrong!
@kan53725 ай бұрын
@@RetiredInThailand This may be complicated and I may not understand it exactly, but I have never thought that BABYMETAL is sexy from a Japanese perspective. However, I did feel a little guilty about adult men being crazy about innocent girls. As for BAND-MAID, in the early days they wore cute costumes following the concept created by MIKU-chan, but later SAI-chan and MISA changed their costumes to reject kawaii. But I don't think they are sexy. If I had to say, Asami from Lovebites might be sexy. I think there are many Japanese female bands that put femininity at the forefront, but I don't think they are sexy. Westerners see kawaii as a negative word for adult women, but Japanese women see kawaii in a positive way even when they are older. If Japanese women are called sexy, they may take it as a sexual object in some cases. So I think Japanese women who interact with Westerners call themselves sexy according to their partner's values.

@@kan5372 agreed. One thing I learned by moving to Asia (Thailand) and attempting to learn the language is that communicating in English (a language with over 1 million words) is far different than communicating in Thai (a language with a few 10s of thousands of words) is that we English speakers take for granted that if we need further clarification we can get more specific ‘language’ on the issue … other cultures rely more on immediate context and cultural norms to understand better specifically what was being meant by what to us could mean 100 different things (or may be certain cases where their culture has many more words to describe a subject that is more important in their cultures; for example some far northern cultures have up to 180 words to describe ‘snow’.)

He he 😂 Exactly my story. I didn't want to click on that THRILL thumbnail for like half a year, thinking it's just another idol band. Fortunately, I succumbed to KZbin pressure in the end and pressed that button, only to get rid of this annoying suggestion. But the KZbin AI knew better, and it knew what I need to save my life from the misery of the world...

@@JohnnyReacts1 Absolutely! However, the later you learn about this band, the more amazing material you have to adore. Those who discovered them in 2015, what did they have? Not much. But they could get a reply from any of the Maids in Twitter, and they could go to the Noodol Cafe to talk to Miku... if they knew Japanese, of course 🙂 I clicked that THRILL thumbnail somewhere in the middle of 2018. There was already a wealth of material at the time. There were two famous live recordings, Shinkiba Studio Coast and ZEPP Tokyo, and they were available on KZbin. The song Play from Shinkiba Studio Coast, with that mind-blowing MISA's bass intro, had over 1 million views, although it was a non-official upload. They have just released a new album, WORLD DOMINATION, which was amazing, of course. And I was able to see them live during their European tours of 2018 and 2019, when they still played in tiny venues. LOGO Hamburg concert still remains in my heart as the greatest thing I have ever experienced. Being a hand's stretch from Kanami for two hours, giving a high five to Miku at the end... I think the rays which their souls emanated have changed me forever. An interesting thing about BAND-MAID is that they don't have a bad song in their catalogue. It is really so, it's no exaggeration. Fans argue, of course, which song is their favourite. But you will often hear many of them saying, "My favourite BAND-MAID song is the one currently playing." That's exactly my case. Each time I listen to BAND-MAID, especially when my player is in "Random" mode, I'm struck with how good they are. When I turn them off and go around on everyday business, my mind tends to forget this. And when I hear people saying, "Oh, that band is great, and this band is great, and also that one," and when I go and check those songs, very often I'm left tired and drained of my energy in the end. And then BAND-MAID starts playing in my headphones, and I want to tell all those people, "If you would only know about BAND-MAID, they would truly revolutionize your understanding of what 'good music' is. Why do you even comply with listening to something mediocre when BAND-MAID exists?" By the way, there is now for me only one other active band which does not look pale against BAND-MAID, and that is ASTERISM. You should check them as well one day. They have a lot of official videos on their channel, but there are also a few unofficial ones which people recommend to the reactors. Or, rather, semi-official, there are couple of their friends/staff which always film their performances from the front row and share it on their channels. Search for a live performance of "Dawn" from 2019, it's their original song, the longest in their catalogue, and they often say it's their favourite creation. But as for me, I keep re-listening now to their cover of "Scuttle Buttin." Many guitarists cover it, it's kind of an exam for your guitar skills, on what level you can do. ASTERISM brought this masterpiece really to a level higher than the original. You get not only the amazing shredding from HAL-CA, but also a bass solo from MIO. I would be very curious to know your criticism of my statement, that HAL-CA is the best guitarist currently active, and MIO is the best bassist in the world... Period 🙂 I understand it's all subjective, but nevertheless. Well, there are many virtuoso musicians on KZbin, who are just doing covers or play solo, but in my mind, I call them "orphaned musicians." They may be absolutely amazing, but they rarely fit into any band, and thus remain more of a curiosity rather than what I would consider a significant musical phenomenon. Whatever.

I don't think they were going for the 'sexy' look to begin with, more like the cute and feminine. It does set them apart from the, literally, thousands of other bands trying to get views. And it works! If you see them, you know who they are! And I mean, look at artists like Taylor Swift, Arianna Grande etc.. they perform it what is pretty much a bathing suit nowadays 😉

At the deep root of Miku's "gap" is social protest. They present it lightly, but the deeper message is: We'll serve up the demure, obedient image you expect, but if you think that's what a woman is, you've got another "think" coming. Then their music kicks you in the teeth. I'm waiting for their first film score. They've got all the skills, and with six anime themes and a TV show theme, they're developing the connections.

I remember early on their videos would come across my channel and I too dismissed them because of the maid outfits. I thought they would be a gimmicky JPop group. The first video I watched was Thrill and I knew right away how wrong I was. After that I listened to the Zepp Tokyo live performances of Play and Onset and I was hooked. Then I looked into their history and found them fascinating!

@@JohnnyReacts1 Won't be helped that they often drop syllables (I learnt that from the documentaries referenced by others - p.s. the order to do them in is 1. Saiki 2. Kanami 3. Akane 4. MISA 5,6,7. Miku pts1-3. They're currently being updated with newer versions for Saiki and Kanami out already with a turnaround of about a couple of months but the originals are still well worth it). If you want to see Miku's progress on guitar, have a look for Sayonakidori (not the Acoustic, yet) a song written for her specifically (she normally gets one per album - also to perform when Saiki takes a break). ohrenje did a 24 cam composite from the US tour which is entertaining. Miku is a force of nature - and I like to refer to her as the best reluctant guitarist I've ever seen (she never wanted to, never had the the desire to, ever play it - she says "it's just something I do" now)

@@JohnnyReacts1 No, it wasn't the speed of the speech that I had a problem with, but the music. :) Your reaction was very good. I have to apologize because my setup was wrong. I don't know how, but it was only music at 1.5 speed. Your comment is not. (???!) :) Sorry again.

This is not your first time hearing Band Maid. I stopped the video 22 seconds in when you said "another Band Maid...". I'm not sure what was said after Band Maid, but it doesn't matter because it's not your first time hearing or reacting to them. Dishonesty for views doesn't impress me. Good luck with your channel, but I won't be watching any of your videos. You had 22 seconds and you blew it.

This is one of the best comments I've read so I decided to steal it from @bobespirit2112 I was thinking of what I thought were some of Band-Maid’s Distinguishing Characteristics Some of the ways in which Band-Maid distinguishes themselves from other bands, in my mind, are: 1 - Living a life dedicated to the band. The band is a 24/7 focus of all their lives. Their work ethic is extraordinary for a rock band. They get together nearly every single day as a group to rehearse, compose and work on band business. It is an all-consuming pursuit for all of them. They don’t live comprehensive lives outside the band in their own focused world and then just get back together to do band things at certain stretches of time, like most bands do. This band is their life and that commitment and dedication shows in everything they do. 2 - Focus on Craft; in all aspects - composition, songwriting, instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, playing and performance. No element of making music gets overlooked by the band and they all strive to improve in all these aspects, from what I can observe. 3 - Contribution by all members. Everyone contributes to the band in deeply significant ways. Although Kanami leads in composition and Miku in lyric songwriting; it appears they all make significant contributions to the development of every song. And then they all have involvement in different aspects of band business. They seem to do a good job of splitting the workload amongst the members. 4 - Positive Outlook. Some might see this as a drawback; where’s the tortured artist? But, really, there’s enough of that output all around; the Maid aesthetic and framework works best from a place of positivity and the Maids being an element of joy sorely lacking in the rock and metal world. Yet, they do this while still tackling real life challenges, relationships, heartaches, philosophical questions, etc in their lyrics. They merge these together in a way I’ve really not seen done as well in any other band.
