Hey friends!! Today, we're going on an adventure. An adventure of character development, 2nd chances, and fun....and I'm just talking about myself. Today, I'm listening to and reacting to BE MORE CHILL, a cult fave musical amongst the high school crowd. This show and this video has been requested an insane number of times, so I thought it would be fun to finally do it!

I love BMC, but I totally get what you’re saying about some of the lyrics, especially Christine’s. One thing I’ve thought a lot about is that the way Christine speaks and the things she says...sounds like a lot of the high schoolers I’m with every day. She makes inappropriate comments about mental health etc. in the same way that my peers do. People at my school totally make jokes about suicide, depression, school shootings, and some other really upsetting topics. I actually think it’s a testament to good writing that the BMC team is writing the way that teenagers speak. I know things are different everywhere, but I really like BMC because the characters sounds more like the teenagers that I’m with than some other teenage musicals. It doesn’t make that language okay by any means, but it brings awareness to it in a way that only art can. Anyway, those are my thoughts. Does anyone else feel like their peers sound more like Christine than you might think?

Holly Teti I feel the same way and I also thing that it brings up the subject of all of the language and how some high schoolers feel to adults too because I know that the adults that I’m around have no clue about the language that is used and what’s going on in a lot of high school students lives

as a teenager i just want to let you know: most of us do feel the way we joke about and joking is a coping mechanism. i know a lot of older people don’t get it but the younger people get it.

I definitely agree, I have friends who themselves have struggled with depression and anxiety (but are ok! and have a therapist) who will literally greet me with "yeet I wanna die" - and I know I'm guilty of it too. Also when stuff stresses us out, like college apps or politics, we often make tasteless and probably un-pc jokes about it as a way of coping with the stress and fear. I try not to as much as possible, but I feel like it's not uncommon in our generation

also as soon as she mentioned the joke in i love play rehearsal i immediately went, "ohhh *that* joke." :/ ALSOO as soon as she started playing more than survive when the intro came in i was just like, "oh yeah uhh we should have warned you sorryyy."

No! Seeing people get surprised by that is always the best part. At most, you warn that there's bad language and sexual themes, but just leave it at that.

I listened to this for the first time with my 14 year old son on a road trip. He’s been a fan for a while. It helped him explain how he’d been feeling, that he related to Jeremy and that some of his depression and loneliness was because he felt like he was still “looking for his Michael”. ❤️❤️

They changed a lot of things in off broadway production And I think they did realize the..."pretty offensive to girls" problem, so they changed some lines (that can be sound overly sexualizing girls) (For example in Halloween song, where Brooke is saying about her costume, being a sexy dog.. They changed that into her just saying "I made it myself! I mean..I bought it..myself" Also re-designed Halloween costumes..etc.. And at one point, Brooke said to Jeremy, "I'm not just a sexy dog, I'm a person Jeremy! I'm a PERSON too!!" I'm really happy about these changes (I heard Joe Iconis let Stephanie, Katlyn and Lauren to work on the script and lyrics this time) Also there's a new song "The Loser, The Geek, Whatever"..which portrays Jeremy even better and we get to know a bit more about him And they focused more on showing the audiences a little bit about each character's back stories It's really a small detail, but it does feel different I'm kinda disappointed that they didn't change any lyrics of "I love play rehearsal" But other than that, everything else was better. They changed so many lyrics and some parts here and there, so I'm hoping for a new cast album Also this time, the characters feel more like in the original book. Will Roland playing Jeremy is so much like a book Jeremy, And even Squip feels more like a Squip in the book Oh and btw, I like how positive you are! :)

GIraffe I really love the musical and always thought the score was full of potential but needed changes. These changes fall exactly under the things I wished they’d had the time to work out in the original production. I’m so so happy that they are working through the score and book and fine-tuning everything

Part of the reason that the dialogue in Be More Chill is so cringey at times is that it is based of a book written in the early 2000s. I love the play, but the book, in my opinion, is much better. The author won awards for the writing. He writes im such a way that the reader can feel very comfortable and at ease. He unfortunately committed suicide a few years ago. He left behind a wife and young son. He had struggled with depression his whole life, and he was only in his 30s. I highly suggest you read the book and his others. She was an amazing writer and advocate for mental health awareness. I just wanted to inform people about him and try to explain why the dialogue of the play doesn’t really feel natural or up to date. ❤️

I like Be More Chill, it's very extra and over the top and very campy at times and I love that kinda stuff! It's not my favourite show of all time but it's such a cool and fun show that I recommend listening to if you're new to musicals

Isabelle Grignon intrestingly enough, that line made me think that Christine had issues with self harm and depression. At first i assumed she didn't know wtf she was talking about, but then realized how defensive she sounded and then in later verses the way she talks about play rehearsal especially with the line 'you are equipped with direction and text. Life is easy on rehearsal. You follow a script, so you know what comes next' to me she comes off as lost and afraid. I've been through some dark times in life and recently celebrated my 5 year mark free of self harm but tbh i wasnt offended by that line for more than a few seconds. Once i thought about why she said what she did it really opened up a deeper understanding of her as a character and this is further shown by her behavior near the end of the musical. Bmc actually ended up being my 2nd favorite musical after Falsettos

honestly, i think be more chill does a really good job of portraying teenagers. most of the things these characters say, i've heard either myself or my classmates say. i really relate to be more chill because it reminded me of myself and my classmates and my school in general. while yes, i can somewhat understand how somethings about bmc can come off as offensive and whatnot, but that's what most of us teenagers are like. we're rude, offensive, we don't take things seriously, and i think be more chill portrayed that practically perfectly. broadway bmc, however, expanded on this more and handled certain things better, but was able to keep the harsh and dark, groudyness of being a teenager there.

I personally love Be More Chill; my only real qualm is that women could be written better. I completely understand your being turned off by the "I Love Play Rehearsal" lyric, though (there's a certain casual suicidality to the characters of the show that I think is very indicative of the current generation of teens, but it's obviously also uncomfortable and can teeter on the edge of poor taste).

I heard scenes from the new versions and think it’s a bit better with female characters, at least Christine and maybe Jenna, and it’s that Christine isn’t a dumbass. Like she knows what the Squip is and does when Jeremy tries to tell her about it, and she blows him off and tells him that she doesn’t need that to be herself

i don't usually get emotionally connected to musicals, including this one, but be more chill is really fun to listen to. it has great energy and really funny lines. i don't think it's one of a kind nor anything particularly amazing, but i can say that's it has some of the most catchy songs i've heard from musicals (i haven't listened to the soundtrack in forever, but i still occasionally get one of the songs stuck in my head) while i'm not at all bothered by the joke in 'i love play rehearsal', i can see why people would be, although i'd say it's pretty tame compared to some of the stuff in the book. however, i do think it is a line that says a lot about christine's character, as she does tend to awkwardly ramble and doesn't necessarily think before she speaks, so i think a lot of people getting offended need to understand that the line isn't intended to be hateful in any way, and getting offended or upset is just kind of.. pointless.

I love Be More Chill with my entire soul. But I realized, I think one of the major factors as to why I love it so much is because it has a pretty similar plot to Little Shop Of Horrors if you think about it. It's just a more futuristic version. And I would die for Little Shop Of Horrors. That doesn't make any sense but I seriously love that show, I wrote an entire college essay last semester about how much I love it. (': (I also gave a presentation on it and I made tiny Audrey II 's out of rice krispie treats. wow I'm so extra)

i absolutely love be more chill, and the thing that really got me into it (like pretty much everyone else) was michael in the bathroom because it is such an accurate and relatable representation of social anxiety. and like you said, everyone's hid in a bathroom while at a party, or at least during an uncomfortable situation, before.
