From a multiethnic country, one majority ethnic in my country, their wedding outfit is traditionally black with gold trims/embellishments. Even in my ethnicity white is akin to funeral color rather than celebrations (if we go traditional route, black doesn't mean funeral at all, though I need to learn more about what it symbolises in my culture). For wedding we traditionally goes for red. And got questioned by my in law to be when I incorporated lavender in my bouquet since purple is considered as the color of widower (this is more a result of mixed culture I believe as my country is super multicultural and multi ethnic). That's why it really ticks me when they just makes colors looks bad :(

Wedding dresses don’t necessarily have to be white. Whatever color the bride prefers, she should go along with that, after all, it’s her special day and whatever makes her happy should become a reality for her. A black wedding dress is unique. Some might assume that you’re attracting negative energy, but that technically isn’t the case. The bride is truly showing off who she is as an individual, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

When my grandma got married, (Spain, 1950s) the tradition for the bride was to get married in black. Although people started to get married in white more after the war, most people in the villages continued the tradition till about the 70s. (Brides will usually wear a black shirt and skirt (sometimes a jacket), with a black “mantilla” and a black “peineta”.
@vilwarin56352 жыл бұрын
The war ended in 1939, not in the 50´s. The tradition was getting married in black if you were in mourning, as my great aunt did, but the rest of the brides wore any other color, but mostly white. You didn´t want to give the impression of not being a virgin. Both my grandmothers got married in the 50´s in Spain and their dresses were white/ivory. The same for the women in my husband´s family (and they were from the village). Some of the dresses were wore by more than one bride, or they were repurposed for other things (granny made a bed cover with hers). The mantilla is more for the mother of the groom, or for religious events. I never saw a bride wearing mantilla and peineta unless she was from Andalucia.
@Dunika2 жыл бұрын
@@vilwarin5635 I know when the war ended. But my grandma still got married in the ‘50s, you know? She wasn’t in mourning and got married in black because it was traditional. She came from a family of tailors and seamstresses, so it’s not like she didn’t have the option of marrying in another color. All of my relatives in that time got married in black (some of them not completely, sometimes they wore lighter colored shirts instead of black ones) I don’t know about before because I didn’t get to know them and we have no photos. Half my family comes from Andalucia, the other half from Aragon, but you are right about the mantilla etc, not all of them wore it, but a lot of them (almost all) wore something similar covering their head and/ or a hat. My aunts were the firsts getting married in white in the family (the first one in the ‘70s) That’s why I said that getting married in white became more popular after the war (I didn’t specify when it ended) I guess I shouldn’t have said that “most” people in the villages kept doing it in black since it might have depended on the region. Those kind of things stick very quickly and once one starts doing it, they all want to do it too. After all, more affluent people (and nobility) have been doing it for some time.
@vilwarin56352 жыл бұрын
@@Dunika I suppose traditions may vary a lot depending on the place. The women of my family got married in Melilla, Cáceres, Ávila and Madrid, and for them not wearing white (except for the great aunt that was in mourning) was a sign of not being a virgin (that's why it was difficult to explain to them that brides get married in other colors now) Edit: just reminded that my grandma from Melilla bought the fabric for her dress with the cartillas de racionamiento, and her seamstress friend copied a dress she liked from a magazine. Is a cool story and the dress is still in good shape 😍
@dantemaquiavelli90392 жыл бұрын
@@vilwarin5635 I also guess it was time mixing, with some people following more traditional coloured dresses (like black), while others preferred white to imitate the higher classes (who where also imitated the aristocracy, specially french and English). On of my Spanish great grandmothers was from Valladolid, although she later married in Madrid, and she wore black, with the mantilla and the peineta in her hair. My other great grandmother was from Cáceres and I don't know what she wore, but both my grandmother and my mom wore white by the 1950s and 70s, so by them it probably turned into the norm. By the way, it's fun to see other Spanish viewers in this channel, specially when we mention our fashion history, I think it's pretty cool 🥰❤️

If I remember correctly, Victoria partially chose white because it was considered a restrained and "poor" color instead of something over the top and extravagant, not colonialism. Kind of like how everyone gets all excited when a celebrity rewears a dress on a red carpet *gasp* because they did something the peasants do. But it's still a stupid reason to only have white wedding dresses today...
@Lill28952 жыл бұрын
@@tardis358 White was never a poor color. It's really hard to maintain, especially lace or silks. From what I've read/watched, Victoria began to champion the church and became a symbol of modesty and non-pleasure (her family and aristocracy before her were very sexual and into pleasure and sexual freedoms from what I understand). So that's where the whole virgins in white and the symbolism around it comes from in colonial Western culture. It is the standard of places that were or are under British rule and fashion influence like the UK, US, and Australia. That's why it's called Victorian fashion and it's in more than one country during her era.
@stellamaxwell7772 жыл бұрын
@@Lill2895 I agree with Jo Brown, I was taught the same thing for the white wedding dress. Before Queen Victoria, the custom was to wear your nicest, most expensive dress when getting married. These dresses were usually of sumptuous material, in a deep/rich color, embroidered and embellished with stones and jewels. White dresses comparatively speaking, were more casual and much less expensive to produce due to how expensive fabric dye was at the time. Most people owned white garments, but they were traditionally reserved for underpinnings and children’s smocks. People in the Victorian age were obsessed with cleanliness and not only bathed regularly, but ensured their clothes were all washed immediately with lye by house staff, so I’m not sure “white is expensive to maintain” is the right narrative either. It would get dirty walking in the streets, but it was cheap to produce (vs a black dress would appear less dirty after wearing it, but it was more expensive to produce). From my understanding, the “Victorian purity requires virginity which is symbolized by white” was a narrative that was tagged on after Queen Victoria chose her dress.

My Grandmother wore a “candy” pink wedding dress for her wedding in 1949. It caused quite the stir and a few whispers! She was quite the fashionista, her father owned the largest department store in the region and she had grown up been accustomed to wearing the latest designs. I was going to wear it for my nuptials, it was a perfect fit until I feel pregnant (yeah I was a knocked up bride) the design and style was beautiful but the shade of pink was not my colour so I was quite relieved to have a reason not to wear it after my grandfather had spent a fortune on cleaning and international postage. I ended up wearing a Silvery/Blue gown which was perfect for my coastal wedding. Flowers where a big feature at my wedding and once I found my dress I knew immediately that blue flowers (hydrangeas delphiniums) would provide the accent to all the arrangements but they where not in my bouquet. My husband and his attended where given ties to wear on the morning of the wedding that matched my dress. Funnily enough I’d always wanted a pale blue wedding dress but I loved the sentiment of wearing my deceased grandmothers dress, serendipity ruled the day and I wore the colour I had envisioned since the age of 8 when I was a flower girl. Some days I think a white dress would have been beautiful but I’m glad I walked my own path. Moral of the story wear whatever colour you want!

I always hoped that all the family and friends drama on this show was set up. Otherwise it would be really sad that there are so many entitled friends, parents and siblings who try to steamroll over the bride's wishes and talk to talk her out of something she wants (and looks amazing in). The entitlement is insane and rude af. Yeah, everyone gets to have their own opinion, but that doesn't mean the bride has to listen to them. It's her wedding.

It is set up. And they play to the camera too
@HeyLeFay Жыл бұрын
Some of it's played up, but some of it is genuine. I have seen some people get very nasty, especially the Say Yes to Dress Atlanta one. I'd say the ones where the conflict gets resolved and people apologize by the end of the episode are some of the ones that might be faked or played up. But I've definitely seen ones where the family members bullied the bride so much she cried and had to end the appointment. The brides are real people, you can find them talking about it on social media afterwards, and some drama is played up for entertainment purposes, but big events like weddings really do bring out the worst in people. Especially in more conservative areas like the South. Edit: the show has some conflict, yes, but they tend to keep it pretty light. Things like budget, arguments over what style of dress, etc. It's "fluffy" entertainment; it's not meant to have much real conflict and they tend to avoid heavy subjects. The handful of times the show has actual conflict, it tends to be pretty uncomfortable and the segments tend to be cut kind of short once it's made apparent.

My sister got married in a black dress, had a black ring, and had skulls in her hair. I was the flower girl and wore a white frilly dress. It was awesome

in a region of portugal tradicionally the bride wore black embroidered skirt and bodice/vest with a white shirt and veil so it isn't the weirdest thing

My mom had an amazing blue and green wedding dress and my dad had a matching tie. To this day she is happy she did not go with the traditional white dress. I'm very much for everybody to just wear whatever color they want for their wedding day and I thought the black dress on Camilla was lovely

I loved the black dresses. And that second couple is just too sweet! She asked her out for coffee. 😊 Plus they have an adorable pup and are getting married in a library. ❤️

When my best friend was getting married, I went to pick her wedding dress with her, as she has no female family member she could go with. To this day, I don't like the dress she picked... because I would never pick that for myself. But she LOVED that dress, and she felt good in that dress, and she felt confident in that dress, and that's all it matters. She looked pretty, the dress was nice otherwise and she was feeling great in it. I love that for her !

Traditionally Spanish wedding dresses were black lace, with matching matila. So I think Mamacita needs to get a grip.

I looove black wedding dresses, I’d consider that for myself actually! In my family’s culture white is seen as a like “grieving color” and not black, usually people wear red dresses since it’s an auspicious color but I just think colored dresses are really beautiful in general

This video came at the perfect time. For some reason I have been binging on the 'say yes to the dress' episodes when I, a 100% don't even want a ceremony 😋. Luke reviewing them too feels a bit validating 😅

I knew I never wanted a wight dress. My wedding dress was a periwinkle color knee-length dress with asymmetrical sleeves. I still love how I looked that day 12 years later. Zero regrets about going with what I wanted.

Same. I've always wanted a colourful dress, no doubt helped by my mother disliking white dresses and being pressured into it by her MIL

I'm wearing black when I get married. It matches my vintage inspired black diamond engagement ring and I've always been more goth leaning with my personal style. Thankfully my mom and teenagers fully support me looking like a glam indigenous version of Morticia Addams on my special day🖤

I love a black or colored wedding dress, but I do think this bridal shop in the TV show is not the best place to get one because they lean to the more traditional white or ivory dresses. Once a bride said they wanted something other than white, their choices narrowed from 1000 to like... ten...

I’ve had this idea that I want my future wedding dress to be colorful and guests have to wear black and white. I’m bored of tradition.
@michellelopez69802 жыл бұрын
Fun Fact: Not only did Victoria start the white wedding dress trend, but she also had a lot of haters. People thought of her dress was basically a glorified nightgown. Which, for the Victorians, was scandelous.
@MsLinoi2 жыл бұрын
Omg I looove that you mentioned it's a new tradition (it was popularized by queen Victoria when she married). I'm a History student and I really appreciate this!

I feel like if you’re not paying for the wedding, you dont get a say. My mother got 0 input on my wedding because it was all out of my (husbands) pocket. It was magical and i did not wear white lol

I also kinda think even if you're paying for someone else it's still not your business . I hate people who use money to control people
@kaitlynnp5822 жыл бұрын
I agree and I thought of that when the second bride said she and her fiance were paying for the dress. No money, no say, mom!
@catladyfromky4142 Жыл бұрын
@AirQuotes Money is control though. If you want something that the buyer will not buy, then you are out of luck. These dresses are thousands of dollars. If you lent that kind of money to someone who told you they needed it for their mortgage, you'd be pretty mad when they went on a vacation with it. It's an entitled person who believes that someone else should basically give them thousands of dollars but not have a say in what was purchased. If you don't want to be on that dependent position, pay for your own dress. It's really that easy. Since all of these brides are actually adults, they should be doing the same.

This is just another thing to hate Queen Victoria for. White is usually a very unflattering color on anyone who isn't thin and it's just not a color that many consider pretty or inspiring. Let brides wear whatever color they bloody well want

In the 1800s black wedding dresses made from satin taffeta and silk were popular in Sweden amongst village people and farmers because then the dress could be worn to funerals and other events and not just the wedding.
