It’s a testament to how good this series is that so many of the actors went on to have stellar careers, some on the biggest of all stages.

Series 1 has one of the funniest episode in all 4 series "The Archbishop" and the other episodes are solid. For some reason people dont get the jokes as much which is a shame because it's quite good.

Series 1 is a different comedy. It was written by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson, and Atkinson is a lot more like Mr Bean in it. Personally I love Season 1 and it is very underrated. The later seasons have Ben Elton writing and though funny are different and typical Elton humour.

This was actually the first episode made but it was shown second, so Percy's beard, which he shaved off in "Bells", is back just for this episode. The opening scene with Baldrick quickly established for viewers of series one that Baldrick was now stupid and Edmund was the clever one.

The term "Renaissance" was first prominently used by the French historian Jules Michelet in 1858, and it was set in bronze two years later by Jacob Burckhardt when he published his great book The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy.

Strange because regicide goes back to the 17th century so the construction of the word is well established. Genocide is a hybrid combination of the Ancient Greek word γένος (génos) 'race, people' with the Latin caedere, 'to kill';

The first series was a co-production between the BBC and an Australian broadcaster that meant they had quite a budget at their disposal, which explains a lot of the outside and location shots within it. The character himself was different in that he made Baldrick look quite clever! Lord Percy was also present and on par with Blackadder in the grey cell department. The production values were a bit different as well. Not the same as later series which you could tell was produced in a relatively standard sized studio. Story-wise is wasn't bad. The same kind of predicaments arose and Edmund did try to be cunning and conniving in order to advance himself, but they generally went wrong and him ending up worst off as a result. Set in medieval England, around a castle setting with the expected themes of the time running through episodes.

Yep, you have to suspend disbelief with comedy. Especially with the Pythons, although they're incredibly smart historically. They know their stuff. BTW, Series 1, is great, though different, filmed on location and maybe, less "punchy" laughs wise. Written by Richard Curtis and Atkinson, whereas Ben Elton was brought in for the later series. But, trust me, it's well worth it. Especially the episode where the outrageous Miriam Margolyes place The Spanish Infanta! 😉😉

Rowan Atkinson wouldn't have allowed that as he was extremely jealous of any other performer funnier than him. Tom Baker tells the perfect example of this conceit in an anecdote of the time he played Captain Redbeard Rum. Notice how Atkinson just freezes in the background when Rik comes on, already knowing he is no longer the funniest performer on set when Rik is about.

@@MeganRuth,, I think u have to also take into account that in the late seventies going back to the mid sixties,,, which was yesterday for the producers of this show ,, alot of shows made for TV especially for the BBC did indeed have serious theatre actors and theatre companies behind them making historical dramas,, more smaller acting companies were usually involved in children's television shows or the commercial itv channel which is rubbish Blackadder readily lampoon's the ridiculousness of theatre and court life, particularly if you take into reason that Shakespeare's globe was a people's Odeon and Shakespeare himself from the Midlands would have iterated more like Ozzy Osbourne than sir John Betjamin Also I once heard the amount of pearls on Queenie's costumes along with the rest of the Blackadder wardrobe department were so lavish as to nearly bankrupt various proceedings ✨😏

By the way, it has always been hard to see the original series. I started watching when Blackadder II was on (so like you and many others) but the earlier one was never repeated and when it FINALLY came out on VHS (after the whole thing had finished) it was quite an event as it had become something of a Holy Grail by that point. So don't feel bad about starting with II. It's quite an old school way of doing it.

Don't bother with Season 1 - Atkinson basically plays his early rubber-faced pre-Mr. Bean nerdy character, Baldrick was a smart(!) character, Ben Elton wasn't on the writing staff yet, Atkinson and Richard Curtis's hip hatred of Shakespeare lies a little TOO heavy on the snarkiness, and the faux-Fawlty Towers humor wasn't in the show yet. Although, if you have to watch one episode, S1 didn't find its mojo until the last episode.

Why not watch S1? The argument that it's different and not as good as following is not enough. They were testing things out and had a much bigger budget on S1, so they went out and filmed a lot on location rather than doing it in studio. And they didn't get the format/formula that was such a success for S2-4 until S2. A lot of shows get better by time ... or worse. Be happy you have one here that just gets better. :D Also, Brian Blessed is in S1. That should be enough. I you start with S2 and love it, you'll probably watch S1 after S4 anyways. And then you'll end with what most think is the worst part. Not smart.

Series one was funny but it doesn't use Atkinson to the fullest...because Edmund Blackadder in the first series is an utter dolt. Everything he does is fouled up, screwed up and practically everyone outdoes him. In the later series, Blackadder sometimes gets beat but it's not because he's stupid. In the first series he IS STUPID. Only Baldrick is worse...and not by much.
