@@Drummer4President In the U.S. (as of April 2023) 43 states with child marriage legally on the books, 20 of those states have NO MINIMUM age requirement!!! There were 300,000 of these "marriages" from the years 2000-2018 (points of interest: all heterosexual, usually religious). In 2021 two 10 year old girls got married. This is in spite of the age of consent being 16-18 depending on the state & having to be 18 (a legal adult) to file for divorce. Just because something is legal doesn't make it right. Children are obviously at risk, but so are adolescents. Numerous studies show that teenagers don't have very good judgement. Adolescents are by definition immature &, as evidenced by brain scans, not yet adult. That said, maturity varies by individual. For that reason there's no perfect legal solution. However, I'd have to agree with an article I recently read: "Age-of-consent laws don't reflect teenage psychology. Here's how to fix them." -- Vox.com. This article is, of course, specific to the U.S. & I'd be curious to know if your country has laws similar to what's suggested in the article. Essentially that people from 16-21 would be able to ASSENT rather than consent to sexual activity. Legally this would mean that if, upon reflection, the person who assented believes they were taken advantage of they could revoke that assent any time before they turn 22. A judge would determine whether or not to validate the revocation based upon whether or not the act(s) in question were in the minor/young adult's best interests. Charges against the other person(s) could only be filed after the revocation is determined to be legitimate. Since minors/young adults can't be held legally responsible for assent (which is currently used for making purchases), it couldn't be used against them the way that consent can. Therefore, assent would only exist to protect the minor/young adult. Also, parents wouldn't be able to revoke assent. Dawn Marie did say, "eventually". Which I'm guessing may have to do with waiting until River is healthy mentally. So, we're cool on that aspect.❤🧡💛💚💙💜

Simon's father heaped praise on them whilst they were doing everything he wanted, but wouldn't raise a finger to help them when they needed him. Mal constantly points out things about Simon he doesn't like and regularly complains about River. But if you threaten or endanger them he will wade through Hell to rescue them.
@robertanderson6929

What Joss Whedon and Tim Minear did was very clever. You are seeing the dark underbelly of an Authoritarian state. It holds the privileged and the poor equally within its grasp. Simon and River's father is one of the elites. But just being associated with a "wrongdoer" could bring them all down. In the former, Soviet Union simply having a family member accused of being an enemy of the State or a counter-revolutionary placed EVERY one of their relatives under scrutiny. People, out of fear, would not associate with you if one of your family members were hauled off to the gulag lest they and their family be considered complicit in your family's "crimes." The principles of Collective Guilt and Collective Responsibility meant everyone was beholden to every one of their extended family to NEVER say or do anything which might make one suspected of holding the wrong views as dictated by the State. And it is interesting to see how Simon's father is willing to sacrifice River to the State in an effort to save Simon. He really isn't a bad guy. He just understands the consequences of Simon's actions under the authoritarian state in which they live.
@sharkdentures3247
@sharkdentures3247 Жыл бұрын
I agree. Mal is more the way a Father is supposed to be. (Generally speaking) Stoic, sometimes harsh, occasionally praises growth & success, disciplinarian who sometimes has to play "the heavy" to force his offspring to "toughen up" in preparation for the outside world of adulthood. The actor who played Simon's dad did a good job (with the very small role he played) & it slightly reminds me of Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones. He prioritizes "Family" (its power, prestige, reputation, etc.) above all else. But doesn't seem to genuinely "care" about the individual members of that family! (except how they benefit the "family")
@robertanderson6929
@robertanderson6929 Жыл бұрын
@@sharkdentures3247 It is easy to think that but Simon's father is afraid. Look at that line, "I had to walk though those doors and that goes on my _permanent record."_ That's not evidence of greed but of fear. This is an authoritarian regime. While the Tams may enjoy some elite status that is completely at the whim of those in power. Have you ever seen old photos of Stalin and where they literally erased people standing next to him because they were "erased" in real life? The Alliance would not hesitate to erase the Tams too and Simon's father knows it. Simon is far to naive to realize that by "talking to someone" he should not be talking to he is putting all of their lives, including his mother's at risk. So of course his dad says, "If you get yourself involved in something worse, I won't come for you." It's because he cannot take the risk. And that is because the risk is a mortal one for both himself and Simon's mother.

Great reaction. Some FYI: "She's sitting next to Jayne. Something's going to happen." - Yup. River stole Jayne's dinner roll. Perhaps she was getting even with him for trying to steal Simon's things? A nice touch to the show is how much better their meals are after they complete a well paid mission. "Daddy will come and take us home." - Daddy = Mal / Home = Serenity. River knows this. Simon learns this when Mal tells him "You're on my crew. Why we still talking about this?" When the twig snapped and the cattle buyers were jumpy - It was the Hill folk in the bushes listening in. They overheard Mal call Simon "Doctor". I loved how River only needed a minute of observation to learn the local dance. Within minutes she became the center of attention as she innovated new dance moves. The Tam Parents have been indoctrinated. They cannot fathom River ever being in danger. They think the Alliance government can do no wrong.

Sort of, kind of, semi spoiler-ish!!! If the series had been allowed to continue long enough, I would imagine there would be an episode where the Tam parents get confronted with the reality of what's happened to River and then we'd find out what kind of parents they really are and then they'd probably get arrested (or killed, although arrested opens up more plot opportunities) .

@@malcolmrowe9003 I always figured if the series continued long enough around the 3rd or 4th season, the Tam parents would be in some trouble that the Serenity crew would have to save them from with big help from Simon. With them getting both a new admiration for his grown up self, and his sacrifices and an awakening to the problems of the Alliance, and the social structure they've been a part of. Humbled would be the word. But in the end Simon and River flying off in Serenity with the idea that they'd still never see them again, no reconcilliation.

Simon's right, at the end, about Mal not liking him. What he doesn't understand is that Mal liking him or disliking him _doesn't matter,_ because Mal accepted Simon as a member of the crew. In Mal's mind, that incurs an obligation - an obligation that runs both ways, of course, but we've already seen (and we see again in this episode!) that Simon just can't help being a doctor under any circumstances, so there's no real risk of Simon failing to hold up his end of the deal. Even if that deal technically only exists inside Mal's head.

you misunderstand Mal's relationship with the Doctor (and the rest of the crew for that matter). When the Doc asks Mal why he came back, Mal was being completely truthful when he said, "You're part of my crew." Mal has a history of military service and now is now the Captain of the ship -- that means everyone on the ship is his responsibility -- he has to protect them and take care of them. So, that is what he does. Sure, he is growing to like the Doc, but that wouldn't matter -- he is part of the crew and that is enough for Mal.

The whole basis of Firefly/Serenity is that Malcolm Reynolds is very tribal. No, he doesn't like Simon much. But he's on his crew; he's part of his tribe. There's an old stereotype, I think put forward in the movie "The Fighting Sullivans" (about a family whose sons all died on the same ship in WWII). The boys fought savagely with one another... but let a stranger screw with any of them, and they have the whole Sullivan clan on their ass. It comes, in part, from the battle of Serenity valley, where suddenly he found himself going from being responsible for 30 men to being responsible for 2,000... and watching them die and die and die and die and being helpless to stop it. "I ain't losing nobody else" is the mindset.

I especially like how to figure out things, and "have Mal's back" when it appears he's less than caring ("he's got a plan ... he just doesn't always share it with everybody"). @@russellward4624 regardless of the father's actual motivation in saying it, it's still a good thing for a kid to hear. (After this is speculation about what might have happened, so might be considered SPOILERS in that it tells you what didn't happen.) And ran for 14 seasons. It was a very popular Western. Dated by today's standards, of "tombstone" and "unforgiven" it was a nice wholesome show, about family. Hope you found it interesting.

"Yeah but she's our witch, so cut her the hell down." Best line of the episode lol. Followed closely by "What does that make us?" ... "Big dam heroes, sir." lol Just a heads up, Firefly... might be coming back. There have been some recent videos about interviews and quiet talks in the background.

That would be nice if it does come back. But I would be sceptical of any reboot. You have to strike while the iron is hot. Not sure if the same magic could be captured again, but I would be willing to let Joss Whedon give it a go.😄

If it is rebooted, it will be "Firefly" in name only. Bob Iger of Disney has made it clear he wishes to indoctrinate us all to become something similar to Simon & River's Parents.

Don't get your hopes up. Disney has already said that the new Firefly will be "family-friendly" (i.e. pablum) and Joss Whedon will not be a part of it in any way (so the writing will almost certainly be shite).

My father in law raised beef cattle. Between hearing from my wife about the “fun” dealing with them and my own experience helping out on the farm I can assure you, you don’t want any cows, in part because they do poop wherever they want. They’re also both dumb and dangerous. I had to punch a bull on the nose to keep him where he belonged; I don’t think he realized he had 10x the mass of me.

@@CTM418 The timeline is a little unclear. We know that River went to the Academy when she was 14. Then some time passed, at least several months, before Simon realizes there is something wrong. Then he says he couldn't get near her for two years before he was contacted by some men, and we don't know exactly how long it was from that point until Simon books passage on Serenity. So River is at least 16, but could be older. Full disclosure: I am also a Rayne shipper, and for me, part of the appeal is actually Jayne's treatment of her to this point and his overall weird behavior towards women. I see it as a Beauty and the Beast trope, where I think River could make Jayne WANT to change for her. There are other reasons, too, for why I think the ship makes a lot of sense, but they are kind of spoilery. If Dawn is still rooting for them later, when it isn't a spoiler, I might discuss it then.

Really. I have seen her shipped with both Jayne AND Mal (And I have seen Kaylee shipped with Jayne and Mal too) Looks like you need to expand your shipper horizons Though I guess having cut my teeth on Singing in the Rain, where there is a 20 year gap... Labyrinth, where Sarah was 16 and the Goblin Kind was 300 (Played by a 39 year old Bowie) and the dance scene caused me to ship it as a kid And reading Tamora Pierce's books, I grew up shipping everyone and everything. I sail in the Multishipper Lane I had first seen 4400, where Summer plays Tess and was in love with Kevin, a character 27 years older (actor was 17 years old) So when I saw Firefly (late as I only saw it in 2005), I was not opposed to shipping her with Jayne.

Dawn, you should have knowledge about about reivers being of Scottish descent, when I lived in Scotland for 10year the one thing I was fascinated by were the brutal attacks and stories at the Border reivers and some of the inhumane tortures they used to inflict on people who lived near the Scottish Borders in the 13th century, famous families like Stuart and Elliot were famously known as the worst of the worst but one famous reivers name will forever be remembered and the is Armstrong as Neil Armstrong who walked on the moon is a descendent and from Langholm where there is a plaque in a church (which I’ve seen) I would Google it Dawn it really interesting stuff. So REIVERS… very Scottish indeed
