I never noticed before but River is always closed to normal when she is alone somewhere with a calming presence. She goes crazy on the ship because everyone is there and she hasn't learned how to handle all that chaotic energy yet.

"you're like a trained ape - without the training!" Jayne summed up in a sentence perfectly.

Jayne is my favorite character, and this episode is the reason why. As said before, the conversation between Mal and Jayne at the end of the episode is some of the best ever!

This is one of the best episodes. What's even crazier is that in the lore (Serenity: Better Days comics), the 'Hero of Canton' legend has even traveled off world. There's a moment where Jayne gives money to a monk to buy shoes. And the monk is in shock because, and I quote, "The Hero of Canton....he's real!" Such a shame we didn't get to see this crew and universe in more detail. There was so much depth and heart in it.

My head canon is that centuries in the future of the 'Verse, the legend will have grown to where Jayne is a semi-mythical Robin Hood-type figure, and all of Mal's exploits are attributed to him, with Mal just being one of his band of "Merry Men".

The conversation between Mal and Jayne at the end of the episode it what took it from being a good episode to a great one for me.

Exactly. Which brings in question as to why Jayne is so obsessed with money. It's not about him.

🎵🎶Jayne!🎶🎵 🎶The man they call Jayne!🎶 🎵He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor. Stood up to the man and he gave him what for. Our love for him now, ain't hard to explain, The hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!🎶 Now Jayne saw the Mudders' backs breakin'. He saw the Mudders' lament. And he saw that magistrate takin' Every dollar and leavin' five cents. So he said, "You can't do that to my people!" "You can't crush them under your heel." Jayne strapped on his hat, And in five seconds flat, Stole everything Boss Higgins had to steal. 🎶🎵He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor. Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for. Our love for him now ain't hard to explain, The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne.🎵🎶 Now here is what separates heroes From common folk like you and I. The man they call Jayne, He turned 'round his plane, And let that money hit sky. He dropped it onto our houses. He dropped it into our yards. The man they call Jayne He turned round his plane, And headed out for the stars. Here we go! 🎶He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor. Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for. Our love for him now ain't hard to explain, The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!🎵

The theme of this episode is about belief and how a person's belief ideology can clash with someone who believes differently. Some people believe so hard they are blind to reality. The mudder boy believed in the hero of Canton and sacrificed himself for it. Stitch believed in the value of a partner and lost his eye over it. Then he lost his life on the belief of justified revenge. All of this causes Jayne to reflect on it. I believe there might be a character growth arc happening for Jayne.

@@sydneym4340 Who YOU ??? No, you're just being hard on yourself. Honestly, don't know why ignorant people like you insist on calling others names because of YOUR OWN inability to follow common courtesy guidelines. Giving opinions ARE spoilers (!!!), and also presuppose that the reactor will agree with you. That's pretty arrogant of you to assume that, and as I said ... why not let her watch it and make up her OWN mind (instead of you trying to ram YOUR opinions down her throat) ???

Such a great episode that gives Jayne some much needed focus and growth. Plus, that song is so iconic! It also has one of my favourite lines from Book, the "faith fixes you" line. I am so psyched for next week because it's my favourite episode of the show.

I love that your reaction to the title before you watch the episode kind of mirrors the crew's reaction to finding out that the town reveres Jayne. Something along the lines of bewildered surprise.

Great reaction. I saw this episode was about belief. Jayne's story is about belief in hope. Inara's story is about belief what it is to be a man. Book and River's story is belief in fsith.

This is a beginning for Jayne- he's been the mercenary muscle, the big dumb as a box of rocks comic relief. Now he's starting to think about 'Why?" and " What does it all mean? What am I worth?" He's turning into a real person, a geniune character.

Doctor Simon hurt Kaylee's feelings and he got left behind, and beaten up, and cut. Kaylee's circle of karmic retribution continues. It's actually one of the best examples in the entire series.

People are always confused by the "not with Kaylee" line, but we have to remember that Simon comes from what is considered "high society" in the verse. They likely have their own special customs for courtship and what they consider the proper way of going about it. For Simon, it's very likely that where he comes from, a casual hook-up is considered disrespectful towards a lady - something one only does with the hired help, not with someone they have serious intentions towards.

Why wouldn't Simon do anything with Kayle? ... because her father is standing over him looking ominous. A lot of females miss how much this scene shows Mal as a father figure. Mostly people see him coming down on Kayle, not the fear a young man feels the first time he faces down a girls dad.
