The Zukovsky scene is interesting in that it changes the context of him meeting Bond. In the final film you get the feeling that he recognizes the sound of the PPK because of previous run ins with 00’s. With the deleted scene it’s more implied that he recognizes it because of his vast knowledge of firearms.
@booqueefious22303 жыл бұрын
It's still kind of unbelievable that you could get recognize a gun so specifically by sound, especially since there are several gun that are essentially clones of the ppk. It makes a little more sense if he associates the sound with specific people that might be coming after him.

3:18 - Rare, the GoldenEye 007 videogame developers, went to the sets and took a million photos of things. They also took set design plans, so they could reference them when creating levels (the start of Facility for example is quite accurate to the film). So yes it's, very possible they included some guardhouse details which were later cut from the film. (To me this actually looks more like the guardhouse in the Runway level, where you get the key to the plane - with a filing cabinet, desk lamp, little table, and two guards inside).

Yes, Goldeneye the video game was originally set to be a game on the SNES system. The game was suppose to be out to retailers in 1995, but Rare ran into trouble during development when the discovered that Nintendo was canceling support for the SNES in favor of the upcoming Ultra 64 system( this was name that the Nintendo 64 had during its developmental cycle). Hence the video game came out on the Nintendo 64 two years after the movie did. I really admire the attention to detail Rare gave to many of the levels in the especially at the beginning.

I am surprised to learn about the removal of the headbutting scene in the U.K.. I was too young to see GoldenEye at the Cinemas, but the original VHS release, and all subsequent television broadcasts of the film from the start featured it here in Australia. The fight between Bond and Travelyn is one of the most brutal in the franchise, with plenty of far more savage headbutts; I am guessing the authorities objected to a woman being assaulted? I would have preferred the first deleted scene, as it is reminiscent of the Daltan installments, which GoldenEye was initially written for afterall and when the U.S.S.R. was still extant. Gives us an idea of what date in history the scene is meant to take place, though I'm not sure why a Soviet military parade would feature a musical piece from the time of Peter the Great, though it does form a coda when we first see a glance of St. Petersburg Square. I think 1 & 4 should have been included. Maybe include the snippet of Natalya outside the church. We observe Zurkovsky's eye for detail - indicating an interesting biography, though if only dealer-character was less comical, continuing to establish Zurkovsky as a man who really knows his firearms and the users whom employ them when encountered by Bond.
@scottgrasser97374 жыл бұрын
im no expert on soviet history but near the end they were not doing well and its likely they might be willing to use older images and music to boost moral as people were getting sick of the soviet propaganda and even some leaders were not so pro soviet anymore

If you watched the Esquire video of Pierce Brosnan watching and commenting on Goldeneye, he discusses that scene of him pulling the PPK on Zukofsky as being one of the first scenes he filmed for the movie. He goes on to explain that his hand had been in a splint prior to the scene and he had struggled trying to keep his pinky from sticking out from the gun. Upon a rewatch you can somewhat tell that his pinky isn't as comfortable on the gun as it should be.

Goldeneye is my absolute favorite film in the series. This along with OHMSS, Goldfinger, Living Daylights are my top films. Trevelyan is my favorite villian, Onnatop my favorite henchman with Oddjob. I love General Oramuv, and the scene here with Boris should have stayed in the film. Oramuvs stare and face, as Bond walks behind the cart of tanks in the pre title is so incredible. His facial expressions speak volumes. Zakovsky one of my favorite allies. And i do like the BMW Z3. The car in TND, no. Any more scenes with Coltrane or Godfreid John welcome. And yes Trevelyan, Onnatop, Orumov, and Boris on a train, would be great. I cant think of a better foil, or villian for Bond to go up against then, well, James Bond himself. That is who Alec Trevelyan is. When he asks for Bonds watch. Looks at it asks : " Q up too his old tricks, is he ?" . " ah, new model ", looks at his own Q Watch. " Still press here " as he disarms Bonds bombs. Just great tension. Trevelyan knows Bond too well, anticipated his moves. And Brosnans look of " oh crap", was great. He was hoping Trevelyan would just overlook it. The guard house looks like it belongs in Red Dawn ( original ). But great video Calvin.

I believe there was originally a shot of Alec getting shot in the head and blood coming out. It was cut for being too graphic and would have increased the film's age rating. Also the developers for the N64 GoldenEye did visit the film's sets when making the game so that could explain the Dam level at the start looking a bit like the first deleted scene here.

I like the scene with Zukovsky, I think it does really good showing his knowledge, but I agree that I think I like his official introduction much more. In one line, he not only shows his knowledge in guns ("Walther PPK! 7.65 Milimeter"), but also his knowledge of who uses it ("Only three men I know use such a gun..."), AND his nature as a character, or at the very least giving him some quick exposition ("I believe I killed two of them"). The gun buying scene just needlessly prolongs the exposition. I just feel that his quickness with that single line just adds to his character just fine, without feeling like it's dragging. It's still a cool scene to watch though. Goldeneye is definitely on my top 3 list of 007 films, so I enjoy seeing this.

Couldn't believe they'd cut Goldeneye for the video and DVD releases. Love seeing deleted scenes and extras on DVD/Blu-rays. The boat chase deleted scenes from TWINE wouldn't have added anything to the film but the Goldeneye ones would have been good to see in an extended cut if only to make Goldeneye a bit more emersive for those of us who've seen the film countless times. They're all good but I can see the cut of Goldeneye was better paced without them. I love Natalia there was talk of her returning in the next film and it was disappointing when she didn't.

Agree totally regarding the opening scene. The inclusion of the guardhouse scenes would have totally lost the momentum of the opening. The arms dealer scene, while interesting didn't add anything as did the gardening thing, but it does explain the gardening comment in the released version of the film. Reminds me of the Plenty in the pool thing in DAF. One of those "what???" moments. The computer scene is kind of just filler and while amusing doesn't really move the story along. Regarding your comment about creating a Bond universe, the issue with this, IMHO, is they keep killing off all the interesting characters, most notably of recent vintage, Mathis. Great video, 😊

Calvin, they were so touchy about headbutting that even _attempted headbutts_ were cut from the close quarters fight between Bond and Trevelyan in the 12 certificate version. Go watch that sequence again and compare it to the 15 certificate print. It is alarming how much material was excised and a demonstration of what a censorial trainwreck the BBFC had become in the 80s and 90s. In fact, if you look up a great video series called "Cutting Edge", they have pretty comprehensive episodes for both _GoldenEye_ and the long lost violent first submission for _Tomorrow Never Dies_ .

Though he does omit the toilet stall kill, sadly. But I’m only up to the theft of the Tiger helicopter so I can’t say if any of the other deleted scenes made it in.

It’s going to be so weird experiencing the GoldenEye story through the Gardner filter... Kinda hoping he just reformatted the script!

Calvin Dyson Sad to say, no. The story’s recognisable but all the dialogue’s a bit off. Like, remember when Bond and Caroline first see Xenia? The line in the film is: “C: I enjoy a spirited ride as much as the next girl, but... who’s that? B: The next girl.” Whereas in the book it’s: “C: I like a spirited drive as much as the next girl but... who the blazes is that? B: Haven’t a clue. But from here she has good lines, and she’s certainly shaking her tail at us.” I’d make some pithy joke, but I think the change speaks for itself.

@@calvindyson The best thing about the Gardner book I found was it gives a great side story of Natalya and her journey from Severnaya to St. Petersberg. Sadly when it comes to Bond, Gardner inserts all these cringy one-liners that just don't fit Bond's character

I started Scorpius by Gardner months ago! Still haven‘t finished it, because it‘s so damn boring!
@BenCol4 жыл бұрын
Movie Guy Yeah, Scorpius is one of my least favourite JG Bond books. Which is odd, because you’d think Bond going against a crazed cult leader would be a really interesting idea. I dunno, there are some interesting bits when Bond infiltrates the cult compound, but it’s all undone by a pisspoor ending which really feels like it was rushed to meet a deadline.

The headbutt was already in the Australian VHS and DVD releases. Maybe it's a UK thing? Speaking of Goldeneye, did you have any luck getting that RetroTINK 2X? I see they've sold out of the classic model and are only selling the Pro version now. Either should do the trick for ideal N64 capture, especially if you're using an S-video compatible N64. I can't stress enough the troubles that console has caused when it comes to getting decent video quality out of.

The UK film certificaters used to be quite touchy about violence. Licence To Kill, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Casino Royale all had to be trimmed down. Thankfully they've now been re-instated. The one no one will ever see is the six shots Bond uses on Professor Dent in Dr No. After being cut in 1962, EON have now lost the footage.

If I had to guess, I’d wager that the Boris/Orumov scene would have happened between the Funeral Parlor and the Spa.

I would have kept the train scene. Every moment that Gottfried John was on screen was a joy.

Hey Calvin, what games are you reviewing after GoldenEye 007 for the n64? Are you gonna go back to older games or are you gonna review diffrent versions of the games you already reviewed, like the PC-version of nightfire or the GBA-versuon of Everything or Nothing?

Regarding the Boris/Ourumov scene, the train is clearly moving and yet Boris claims he's online. Was it even possible to have reliable (wireless) internet access on a moving vehicle at the time? (Especially in Russia, not too long after the dissolution?)
