DnD was created 50 years ago (we are moving into the 50th anniversary) by someone called Gary Gygax. It was very different back then but has gone through a number of different iterations, and now we have 5th Edition (known as 5e) which originally came out in 2014. So yes, it was originally just one guy who thought... "you know what would be fun, Adult make believe with rules and dice" and is now a massive franchise.

Not just Gygax. Dave Arneson is the co-creator.

Also, the play style was more of a military style, but they wanted to take it in a fantasy direction. I recommend the book Of Dice and Men if you want the whole story.

@Outrider852 ай бұрын
To clarify a little, it came from wargaming, and Gary and Dave's desire to scale down from large armies to focus on small groups of warriors. The original version came from a game called Chainmail with rules taken from a game called Outdoor Survival, which eventually evolved into Dungeons & Dragons as they added influences from fantasy like LotR and Conan the Barbarian.

I played Slimesicle’s oneshot with my friends (not completely identical, but heavily influenced). One of my friends made a nature scene with a bear, one made her character but human (tiefling with issues), one made a pile of gold, and one made the other characters in the party, representing a desire for friendship and a place to belong. I felt a little bad when I forced them to destroy their creations.
@ninjabluefyre38152 ай бұрын
"Made her character but human" That is so deeply sad, I wanna hug them and tell them they are loved. My tiefling characters are way too confident.
@cpcoultertweedles72162 ай бұрын
@@ninjabluefyre3815 Yeah, 70% of the time we play characters that are heavily traumatized. It makes for interesting story oppertunities. 20% are joke characters, and occasionally we'll have a character that's actually emotionally healthy. For example, our current campaign has a centaur who was kidnapped and then forced into becoming a mob enforcer, a wizard with ASD (pretty much none of us are neurotypical; the wizard didn't want to mask for once), a cleric that lost their loved ones in a horrible fire, an NPC that was part of our party when we started, got forcibly seperated/trapped, assumed we left her behind on purpose and went evil for a while...and the Tooth Fairy. We've also recently introduced the Tooth Fairy's older sister, the Bone Fairy.

My favorite D&D Classes are Spellcasters; Mainly Warlocks, Sorrcerers, and Wizards. But for most of the major campaigns I've been in I always make it a consistent theme for all of my characters to be apart of one consistent bloodline i.e "The House of Mer". Each character having a "Mer" in their name, and a title to describe them. The running theme being all of them are spellcasters but they have an inherit lack of talent in spellcraft despite their inherited bloodline (i.e the idea of a black sheep). In which I normally limit what spells they use in keeping of their theme of "born into a noble magical bloodline, but just suck at magic". And thus usually relies ingenuity with what they have. (My characters in question) Mer'lander Therholt Silvertian - Wizard/Rogue (Illusion, Arcane Trickster), Heavily relies on and uses mostly illusions (flavored as low-tier "Light" and "Shadow" magic) to do a stabby stab and "Trick Weapons" for the Arcane Trickster aspect. Is a bit of an loner, but otherwise very respectful (Neutral Good). Merlot The Darklore - Warlock/Fighter (Hexblade, Eldritch Knight), Mainly just an upclose duelist who primarily used magic related to just... well sounded Eldritch related (Mainly Darkness & Shadow Of Moil which btw is a sick as hell spell). A Cunning bastard, charming but cocky, but overall loyal to those whom are his friend (Chaotic Neutral) Merlock The Artificer - Artificer (Artillerist), I didn't really need to limit him that much since all of his "spells" I just reflavor as tech he makes or a relic/artifact - that well Eldritch Cannon + Homonculous Servant go brrr. He's just a precious little beanie boy (Lawful Good).

I'm still waiting for my chance to get into my first campaign (my BF got me hooked on homebrew, which I've been working on while his group's mid-campaign), but one of the first things I've noticed about the game is that it's pure, unrestrained, utterly hilarious _chaos._ (As for my favorite class... honestly, I've got sheets for every one of them, though my Owlin Scribe Wizard, my Gnoll Warlock/Fighter multiclass, and my Harengon Battle Smith Artificer are my favorite characters so far.)
@PoisonxTea2 ай бұрын
This was such a fun reaction! If I had to guess, I'd say that Jaiden's character was a Warlock, Ranboo's character was a Bard, and Alpharad's character was a Fighter... Though Jaiden's and Alpharad's characters could have been a Sorcerer and a Barbarian respectively! I think if I had to choose my favorite D&D classes to play as, I'd probably pick Monk, Rogue, and Warlock as my top three... Though Artificer is also up there. That being said, some subclasses from other classes are really tempting for me, like Swarmkeeper Ranger, Samurai Fighter, Spores Druid, and even the unofficial errata Jester Bard. (SO sad that one never made it into the books!) I also really love playing a lot of the more nonhuman races, like Changeling, Goblin, Harengon, Kenku, Kobald, Owlin, Plasmoid, Simic Hybrid, Tabaxi, Thri-kreen, and Warforged. I hope you can find a good long-running campaign to join sometime! I'm in a few TTRPG campaigns right now (albeit not D&D -- two Monster of the Week campaigns and a short Spire campaign) and it's really a blast to inhabit a character and explore a world like you said.

A literal white collar office worker barbarian. xD 2. Tholomew the cat is legit just crazy. There is no time loop. He's just mentally ill and technically harassing his neighbor who he's pinned all his paranoia on. 3. Jaiden thought a mace was the actual spray and didn't realize it was the weapon Mace. Slimecicle thought it would be hilarious, so allowed her to have 'mace' the spray instead. xD 4. The actual DnD campaign was so fun cause Alpharad showed up in a full three piece suit with a plastic axe and basically roleplayed his character. He had so much fun, and it was fun to watch.

there's people telling you about Gygax and all and that's great, but what came before that were wargames. If you've heard of Warhammer 40k, that's one of the more popular games that are close to what it was then; or maybe Diplomacy, although I'm not sure how renown that is with most people - the first 'wargames' date all the way to 19th century Prussia. Basically, they were "board games" re-inacting or imagining war scenarios, sometimes even used for strategy training. Through various evolutions and expansions on the format people added diplomacy, building relations between factions, etc; and then people started going deeper rather than wider, towards imagining the conflicts of individual units, individual soldiers - and thus you have the basis of the modern rpg, pretending you're someone in a situation. Also, DnD wasn't the first rpg of its kind (i.e. individual player characters) - while I can't tell you off the top of my head what came before, I know I heard anecdotes by people who were there when "DnD" was first presented to bigger groups of people, and a lot of them were already gamers, looking down on this new thing that seemed to have less of the brutal number-crunching wargame in it. But DnD sure got lucky with growth since then.

I much much much MUCH prefer Pathfinder 1E, which is based on d&d 3.5, but much much much much much much much more expansive. My favorite class comes from the 'occult adventures' expansion book, and the class is called "occultist", and though it can be a bit awkward to learn, it is versatile as fuck. More combat related? When regaining your slots for the day (as a sorcerer would), you can add focus points to your transmutation focal item and gain +2 strength (capable of doing from level one. Either +2 strength, dexterity, or constitution). The class is really quite versatile! Start off with two different schools (conjuration, evocation, etc), and at 3rd level, and every 4 levels after that, you can get a new school, or repeat a school, needing a new focus object each time. It is psychic magic, so on speaking or wiggling fingers to cast, but emotion and thought components. If under the effect of an emotional effect spell or under a fear effect...you cannot cast your spell. Can be blindfolded, gagged, bound helpless, unable to move, and can still cast spells. The thought component is concentration, super concentration. Can sacrifice your main action phase to cast the spell normally, instead of an added 10 or 20 concentration check, depending of what transpired the turn before. I typically start with conjuration and evocation. Can heal one turn and magic missile the next.

My first experience with D&D was with 4th Edition, one a lot of people seem to dislike quite a lot, and after many years I've come to realize that if it had any other name except D&D it would've been much better received, because it's a blast to play. My preferred classes are Warlock, from 4E, because it was a lot more like a regular caster but more focused on controlling the battlefield, particularly the Old One patron path. In 5E I've been enjoying plain basic warrior a lot, just from the ways I can tweak it to make it more mechanically fun, but I've also been enjoying a lot of Sorcerer, particularly the clockwork soul. There's this campaign I'm playing in where I'm a living grandfather clock that wacks people with their pendulum, but does mostly time-space-based magic.
