Kris Kristoffersons’ song..Janis’ voice…maybe my favourite of all time. The story between the two of them with this song is nothing short of heartbreaking. She wanted to show him a rockified version of his country song so she recorded the song, unbeknownst to him, in his studio, with her band, and left it for him as a.gift/joke then left on tour. She passed shortly after and he didn’t find the recording til he went back to his studio. He released it as soon as he could and a new legend was born, as we all know. He says it was very many years til he could perform the song. He refers to it as Janis’ song. Her little giggle at the end of the recording makes me laugh and cry at the same time. Absolutely one of a kind. Thanks Salvo. ❤️‍🔥

Her cover of the song called Summertime is something very special, as simple as it is. You might also find it fun to watch her live on the Tom Jones television show, singing a song called Raise Your Hand with her host. It's a great performance by both of them, and they're about as unlikely a duo as you're ever likely to see.

Greatest version every recorded and I got a chance to talk to Kristofferson after one of his shows back in the '90s at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA. Kris who had a history with Janis told me after hearing the sad news of Janis' passing and then hearing the recording she did on his song he had that smile and look in his eyes telling the story I'm paraphrasing. Janis never got to sing that song live, but in June and July 1970, Joplin and the Greatful Dead, Buddy Guy, The Band, Flying Burrito Brothers, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Mountain, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, also (Traffic and Ten Years After only performed at the concert in Toronto), they started what was called The Transcontinental Pop Festival up in Canada that they traveled by train. Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver. There's a British documentary of this tour by train that came out in 2003 called Festival Express. You can find it on KZbin, but you really have to look for it. In this film you can see footage of some of the concerts, back stage and on the train. In one clip on the train traveling between gigs, there's Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Dead and Rick Danko of The Band and John Dawson of the New Riders of the Purple Sage and Janis in one of the Club cars jammin'. This clip has everyone watching Janis play 'Me and Bobby McGee' solo on an acoustic guitar. I think it's the only time she performed this in front of people as she hadn't recorded it yet on that last album before her death that October(two weeks after Hendrix died, WOW! That was a Big Blow to lose both of them so soon. Plus two weeks before Hendrix died, Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson of Canned Heat also died, they all were 27yrs. old and joined that 'infamous' club) Great song Kris wrote and the Best version every recorded by Janis. I was lucky to see her twice, once at Tanglewood in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts in 1968 and Woodstock in '69. There will never be another Janis Joplin, some have come close, but when Pearl sang the Blues there was no one who could touch her back then or today. 🎤🙏

"Me and Bobby Mcgee" is a very American song -- the geography (Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Salinas), the quintessentisal road trip ("flagged a diesel down"), the clothes (bandana and jeans), the lonely melancholy. It is wired for a US and Canadian audience, but elsewhere, not so much. Check out -- "Raise you hand" duet, with Tom Jones, on his show. That clip give me great respect for Mr Jones's deference to the great Janis, as she totally outclasses him on his own show! -- "Summertime" -- her voice disembowels and dismembers you. She is soo cruel to her audience, and she knows it. -- "Ball and Chain" (Monterey Pop festival) -- widely acknowledged as THE legendary breakout performance in Rock'n'Roll. She was an unknown when she stepped on stage. The reviews gave her national fame, for good reason.

This is the best song about hitchhiking I ever heard and always nice to hear for someone who's hitched tens of thousands of miles. It's so realistic, even down to the way Kris had them splitting up in Salinas, CA (which is where a guy like Bobby could find a farmworker job.) That's where John Steinbeck's novels "The Grapes of Wrath" & "East of Eden" were situated.

The most haunting quality of Janis's singing is how the sadness always comes through even when she's singing about some happy moments .... like this one ... Nostalgia about happy times somehow always come with some inevitable sadness simply because those moments have passed, you cannot stay in happy moments forever, you always move on, change is the only constant .... this song is deceivingly easy listening, once you sense the undertone of sadness, it becomes kinda hard to listen to because you ache for Janis ...

From what I’ve read, when she sings of “grabbed my harpoon, and my dirty red bandanna” it was a reference to shooting up heroin….harpoon being the needle and syringe.
@AlwaysEPDoris
@AlwaysEPDoris 7 ай бұрын
No. Harpoon referred to and is another name for a harmonica. The next line says she was " playing softly while Bobby sang the blues".
@helenespaulding7562
@helenespaulding7562 7 ай бұрын
@@AlwaysEPDoris ok. I’ve read the other explanation several times but I won’t argue the point. Never heard a harmonica referred to as a harpoon…..ever. And of course a needle and syringe would look MUCH more like a harpoon than a harmonica would. Also know that Janis was hooked on smack, so it made sense. But, you seem to have a great degree of certainty in your opinion. So perhaps you’re correct although I would really like to know your source for that interpretation Ok, looked it up. It appears that both slang terms have been used, but Kris Kristopherson intended the Harmonica reference. He might have been the first to do so. I guess not too big a stretch from “harp” to harpoon? Here’s the quote : Thanks for the request Annika. I’m not used to hearing harpoon as a slang term for harmonica but apparently it is and was used by Kris Kristofferson in the song Me and Bobby McGee. Whether it started there or was already in use I don’t know but it scans well for the song. On a darker side harpoon is a slang term for a syringe and I understand that bandanas were often used as a restrictive bandage by drug takers when shooting up. Ironic when you consider how Joplin died. I prefer to stick with the harmonica slang.
@AlwaysEPDoris
@AlwaysEPDoris 7 ай бұрын
If you watch the "official" video, when she sings that line, they show a crumpled up redundant with a harmonica in it. I also looked it up, not knowing harpoon referred to a harmonica. Just like ax is a guitar. Don't know the origin of either.
