Full video transcription and timestamps Welcome back to Slopleech, thanks for slopping by. Today we’re going to be Reacting to JJJacksfilms reacting to Arthur Frederick reacting to Jacksfilms reacting to Sidemen reacting to video compilations on KZbin. This is a little complicated so I’ll explain the context in reverse order. The Sidemen are a group of KSI’s friends who are based in the United Kingdom. They have a main channel where they typically host charity soccer games to raise money. They have a side channel where they react to videos. Yes, the Sidemen have a Side channel. On one video is particular, Arthur Frederick was invited on as a guest. Arthur Frederick is also a U.K. Based content creator who is friends with the Sidemen. In that video, their reactions were lackluster and basically amounted to them just copy and pasting other people’s videos, which constitutes as stealing content. Jacksfilms has a side channel called JJJacksfilms, which primarily originated as a parody of SSSniperwolf, a KZbinr who also reacted and stole content from others. The interaction between Jacksfilms and Sniperwolf eventually resulted in Sniperwolf doxxing jack’s address. Despite the situation, a Jacksfilms made a difference by platforming the creators who had their content stolen, and they managed to get a few of Sniperwolf’s videos taken down for copyright infringement, and Jacksfilms continues to call out other creators for lazy reaction based content. That is all just the context to understand the circumstances of the video we are about to react to. 2:45 And this is true, not just of the Sidemen, but of a lot of reaction based channels on KZbin. Most of the time when watching a react video there is no insight or additional context added to the video to justify utilizing the footage in its entirety. People like to throw around “fair use” when it comes to these topics and subjects, but they don’t seem to understand that fair use is a legal classification that has clear and defined parameters as to what it is, and what it is not. For the most part, as long your content is transformative, educational, contains valid criticism, or is a parody, then you have more wiggle room in a legal setting. With that being said, your “content”, cannot exist as a substitution of the original, and that is where most people are getting things wrong. For example, in this video, I will use clips from Jacksfilms video, but this video is not a substitution of the original intended experience. Jack’s video is around 30 minutes in duration, I will be using segments of that 30 minute video, but I will not be using this video to replace the viewing experience of his video. Take a step back, and think of this in terms of not just KZbin videos, but of tv shows and movies. You would not play Avengers Endgame in it’s entirety on KZbin and claim that it’s fair use. And you would not do that specifically due to the fear of legal backlash and consequence of infringing on Disney’s Intellectual Property. So if you would not do it to Disney, then why do it to a fellow creator? Additionally, if you were to do something that allows you to get away with doing it to Disney, then you could also use it in context of reacting to other creators. Something that I see people do a lot of, is breakdowns of the teasers and trailers of Marvel Movies. Content creators like The Canadian Lad, has multiple videos where he watches a movie at 0.25% speed, to analyze frames and catch Easter eggs the creators have put in the movies. This style of video is transformative for several reasons. 1. It is educational within the nature of adding context to scenes and movies. There are times in which the set design of a scene can foreshadow the entire story of that specific film. Other times, one can talk about the framing of a shot and how the way characters are placed can tell the viewer more information regarding that character’s mindset. One such example comes from Totally Not Mark, a content creator known for reviewing various anime and manga series. In this clip I’m about to show you, he goes over how Akira Toriyama used triangles for visual storytelling during the Saiyan Saga of Dragon Ball. 5:46 Totally not mark How to draw manga like Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5itgaagZ7VgobMfeature=shared Going back to read Dragon Ball with this new knowledge and understanding can enhance your viewing experience, thus adding to the original content in question. 2. It changes the typical viewing experience to such a degree that it no longer is recognizable from its original form. And 3. It is not competing with the original work. A 10 minute video essay on a movie should not compete with the original movie in its entirety. But when you are uploading a video of you reacting to someone else’s content, and playing it in it’s entirety, and then reuploading that video to the same platform as the original video, then it becomes a problem. Not only are you competing with the original work, but your video also acts as a substitution for the work in question. Using the 4 examples I laid out earlier, the question can then become how do you make content transformative? How can you make content educational? How can you make it a parody? And what constitutes at valid criticism? Transformative has to differ from the original viewing experience to such a degree that a normal person would not immediately know what it is supposed to be. It has to take form so detached from its inspiration that it can actually take a shape of its own. For example, Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk, is a transformation of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Both are stories that focus on the well mannered man struggling with his dark side, and how that dark side is viewed by others. Another example can be from Dark Souls, Bloodbourne, and Elden Ring. Even though these are all games of the same genre, made by the same company, there are still key factors that allow the average person to differentiate between them at a glance. Even the terminology within the games is different enough for the average person to delineate which game they are referring to, such as hollow, blood drunk, and tarnished. Additionally, look at the difference between The Simpsons and Family Guy. Both are animated sitcoms on Fox, that follow a middle class family, with children and a baby. The father hangs out with his friends at the bar, and his drunkenness and idiocy leads to wacky antics and situations. Despite the similarities, there are visual differences that transform the viewing experience. The Simpsons have irradiated yellow skin, while the cast of Family Guy have skin tones closer to what would be seen in reality. Homer works at a power plant, and Peter works at a brewery. Maggie almost never talks, while Stevie does. Santa’s helper does not speak ever, while Brian does. Even the difference between Chief Wiggum and Joe Swanson add to the transformative nature. Adding on, American Dad uses the same formula, and inverts it again to be completely separate from the other two shows. You can make things educational by adding context or information that changes and enhances the viewing experience, such as the earlier example from Totally Not Mark. You can make something a parody by recreating it with a self aware perspective or by changing the focus of the subject to something comical. Weird AL does this all the time with his music parodies. And valid criticism exists when there is no malicious intent from the critic, and when the subject can use that criticism to elevate future works.

11:30 The potential income is the one thing that always gets me. With these compilation react channels, they’re cranking out multiple videos a day. Every video is at least 8 minutes long, so they have mid roll ads, and they have sponsorships as well. So assuming they play a pre roll ad, mid roll ad, and post roll ad, that 3 opportunities for income, and when these videos are getting tens to hundreds of thousands of views, it adds up. A good rule of thumb, is for every 1,000 views a video gets, imagine the creator gets $1. This is after KZbin takes their cut. Now with videos that get hundreds of thousands of views, that means that you’re taking hundreds of dollars out of the pockets of other creators to line your own pockets. But again, if you would not do it to large companies, then why would you do it to other smaller creators? Is it because they’re easy targets who typically don’t have the resources to fight back? Because if so, then it’s also a case of bullying the weak, and that is never something that is defendable. 13:15 And that’s true, when you pause to interject views will drop off, but as a KZbinr, you have the ability to cultivate your audience. You are the one creating the content, so you are the one who determines what people will be most interested in when you make these videos. You either cultivate an audience that will not drastically drop off when you pause a video, or you can build an audience that is only there for the video. But if people are only watching your reaction, so that they can see the original video, then what significance does your reaction add? 13:40 cultivation of audience 15:00 And that’s true, not just of reaction content o]but of slop, news, and drama channels too. Everyone is just looking for the easiest and lowest effort things that they can do to make the most amount of money, even when it comes at the cost of negatively impacting others. 16:00 The Sidemen could’ve talked about their own experience with Airport and travel security. As people who host a lot of charity events, they could talk about the logistics of getting different on flights and making sure that things go smoothly, or the obstacles they face when flying, and so forth. You could talk about the stress of having to take off your belt, and your shoes, and your jacket, and then take laptop out of your bag, and your iPad out of your bag, and your phone, wallet, and keys out of your pocket, and having to put them all in different bins, and then trying to get everything back on without missing anything. Or the stress of whether or not there will be a search, or worrying about whether or not your laptop or iPad will turn on. Or worrying about whether or not the TSA agents are going to steal your belongings which is something that happens a lot. More frequently than you would hope. But it’s small things like this that can make for a good reaction. Once again, if people are only watching for the video you are reacting to, and not for your own reaction, then they aren’t watching you. What do you think about the reaction content situation? This is something that pops up every year, and it seems like it’s always the same discussion every time. Discuss in the comments, and let me know what you liked and disliked about this video. subscribe Links to Jacks video My response to Arthur’s response to our Sidemen Reacts video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmqwc4usqaeloa8feature=shared
