hide from X Japan discovered Luna Sea and signed them to Yoshiki's label (X Japan's drummer). Sugizo, the lead guitarist, has been X Japan's guitar player since their reunion in 2007. Also, Visual Kei isn't a "music genre", more like a scene. VK bands span multiple genres, metal, pop, electronica.

sp_93 he mean that visual kei bands go from be well vkei to be more like "normal jrock " bands , he always mentions how vkei have so many genres (:

I didn't say exactly "jpop" but a lot of visual kei groups are very poppy. Oficially since 2009 but he has been playing guitar for them since their first reunion concert.

Elizabeth B I'm not a fan of pop either, I was just saying there are poppy bands haha I'm not that aware of current VK either. It's okay, nobody has to know everything :) Yoshiki asked Sugizo to join since X decided to reunite in 2007 but Sugizo just wanted to keep in the background out of respect for hide.

Sugizo (the lead guitarist) is a HUGE influence on a lot of modern jrock and visual kei artists. In fact, the band in general is a huge influence. Listen to early Dir en grey and you’ll hear tons of Luna Sea in there.

According to Sugizo in an interview they disbanded because during the last 2-3 years they didn't get along well. In the 90s they were the 2nd most relevant (best selling?) jrock/visual kei band after x japan. X Japan's Hide discovered them and was best friends with Sugizo and Yoshiki. Yoshiki created his own record label and Luna Sea produced their first album under his label. They called themselves Lunacy but he made them change it into Luna Sea telling them it would be better marketing wise, as it sounded the same in Japanese as Lunacy. So X Japan members are Luna Sea's senpais and Yoshiki asked Sugizo to join X Japan after they reunified in 2007. Coincidentially that's the year Luna Sea reunified too. Visual Kei started with X Japan and other Japanese rock bands from the 80s. X Japan was the most influential one and the one which created the visual kei "genre" per se (other bands also did but they are the most famous from 80s decade along with Buck-Tick) copying their idols like Bowie or Kiss and making it even more extreme. They used to label their CDs and concerts with the motto "psychodelic violence crime of visual shock" lol. Originally all visual kei bands played rock, so visual kei was rock even though not all rock was visual kei. In the 90s some bands played other genres but mostly visual kei is related to jmetal/jrock, I would say.

Thank you so much for reacting to LUNA SEA! They're my favorite Jrock band :) Hoping for a part 2 in the near future! ;) To answer some of your questions: LS themselves doesn't call it disbanding but rather a 'curtain fall'; it was more of an indefinite hiatus :) One reason for the hiatus was, according to them, that at the time they felt they'd achieved as much as they could with LS and wanted to grow more as solo artists. Another was, according to Sugizo, that the relationship and communication between them had become strained due to egos. It would indeed be fitting if the fans were called Lunatics but nope, the fandom name is SLAVE! They went on a short world tour in 2010 but haven't had one ever since, I'm hoping they'll have one again some day :)

DEAD END were one of LUNA SEAs big inspirations (at least of their singer, not sure about the rest). They've also been around since the 80's (with like 20 years of hiatus) and have 2 completely different eras, which are both really interesting and nice!

Don't listen to them as much these days but they're a brilliant band with such a varied pool of music thanks to the talent of all the members. Luna Sea is really something.. Sugizo plays Violin too in the band, an amazing guitarist and overall musician, he does collaborate with a lot of people (member of X Japan too after hide died). You should listen to the live version of Rosier, the one named "LUNA SEA ROSIER (中日字幕)", absolutely one of their best performance EVER, gives goosebumps like no other.. try it when doing workouts, you'll thank me! Anyway the best thing about them is the interaction with people at their concerts, you shall see the Reboot concert here on youtube, you see genuine people singing all together while they are having the break, or crying at one of their last songs. Sugizo (yeah I'm a big fan of him) is also an anti-war activist and spent many weeks after the Tōhoku tsunami in 2011 helping physically in the disaster being exposed at radiations (anyway Japanese people are well known for being amazing in those situations). So.. a big band formed by amazing people, you'll have fun listening to their albums!

Some other songs by them that you'll probably like are: Gravity, Stay, Storm, Desire, Tonight, Wish, Loveless, Anubis, Dejavu, Time is Dead, Shade, Shine, G, Be Awake, and Aurora. You should give them a listen when you get the chance.

Hey Ryan, I'm a recent subscriber and I enjoy watching your reaction content on Japan's rad music. I'm surprised you still haven't reacted to an awesome band called Deluhi, so I suggest you should listen to them whenever you get the chance. Syu, from the band Galneryus, was his guitar teacher (is what I heard around the community) and his band is also out of this world. Here is the songs I want you to check out from Deluhi... Some Luna Sea songs you may want to check out: -Fate -Blue transparency -Time is dead -Precious -Wish -Déjà vu -Jesus -Believe -Providence -Mechanical dance -Imitation -Claustrophobia -Rain -Slave -Loveless -Face to face -Civilize -In future -Hurt -Forever and ever -1999 -End of sorrow -Storm -Gravity -A Vision -Into the sun -Tonight -The end of the dream -乱 (ran) Basically pretty much everything from Luna Sea (1991) to Style (1996) is really, really good. Things started to go downhill with Shine (1998) and the following albums, IMHO. They're still good, don't get me wrong, but the songwriting feels less inspired, more mainstream, more generic pop/rock with a few occasional gems...
