We are being spoilt with so many Madonna reaction videos. Thanks Eric! I love the video for What it feels like for a girl. The funny thing is that the music video was banned from TV for being too violent, proving the exact point Madonna was making. Because ironically, TV is already filled with lots of violence as it is. So how come only this gets banned? Is it only perceived as “cool” and socially acceptable when depicted by men? Also, regarding the elderly woman, I always took it as both her and Madonna’s character are ill in the video (hence the scenes towards the end with pills on Madonna’s bedside). So after being fed up with life in the patriarchal system they decide to go on this one final “joy ride” where they just want to F everything up. Obviously this is all metaphorical and not supposed to be taken seriously. Die another day is another EPIC badass music video. A fun fact worth mentioning is that it remains the second most expensive music video of all time, only behind MJ’s scream. A small detail I love is how the physical Madonna in the torture chamber is injured and cut with every blow from the internal fight between the light and dark sides. To me it always spoke to the toll mental health takes on the physical body. M is one talented genius! Anyways, thanks for another incredible analysis as always Eric! I loved it!

regarding the Secret video - some background. She actually grew up in a majority black neighborhood for a part of her childhood and has said she felt more comfortable there than when her family moved her into lower middle class white neighborhood. At this time she was also dating Dennis Rodman and Tupac Shakur, and it’s come out since that Tupac really cared for her but felt that he couldn’t be with her because of the racial difference and that he didn’t know how to fit her into his world. So i wonder if there is some reference to that here?

Secret is a very beautiful song indeed. And I really adore Die Another Day. Madonna is my favorite artist while the James Bond is my favorite movie series. I was so happy when Madonna made a theme song for my favorite franchise. Unfortunately, the majority of Bond fans hate this song and often call it the worst Bond theme ever. I disagree. It was innovative and it still sounds fresh

"Die Another Day" is still, to this day, the second most expensive music video ever made (#1 is "Scream" by Michael and Janet Jackson). From Wikipedia page: "The total production costs for the video was around $6.1 million ($8.67 million in 2019 dollars)".

Great job Eric! I love all the Freudian references in Die Another Day; especially in regards to Freud's dream analysis. "I'm gonna wake up, yes and no" is very similar to how Freud said that when analyzing dreams it's always "this and that; not this or that". Looking forward to your next upload!

Just discovered your channel and am mid- binge but wanted to say that I'm loving your thoughtful analysis of these albums/songs/lyrics/videos. The fact that you make connections to the artist's previous work and take it a step further by exploring the relationship between the song lyric/style and the visual representation of that song in the music video is nothing short of inspired. I also love that you theorize on the artist's motivation or inspiration and then go on to identify connecting themes and evaluate the evolution of an idea or a concept within the artist's work! With artist's like Tori and Madonna in particular, they tend to be highly conceptual artist's who pour so much of themselves into their music and the manner in which they express themselves through their artistry that the layers run deep and wide. They also parallel in many ways and draw heavily from their own life experiences within the context of relationships, opression, politics, faith/religion, gender and sexuality. Keep up the great work and am looking looking forward to more content from you!

First of all thanks for now doing this, love your interpretations. To me secret is a very important message of self love and just for that deserves everything. The remix of what it feels like for a girl is a beautiful one (there are many exciting mixes of other songs, to me all the ray of light singles are the best). And day another day to me its a beautiful song to go back any time when you feel underestimated, mostly from yourself and you learn to love your self (secret lirycs)

Yet another great reaction Eric. I would note, in Die Another Day Madonna is fighting in a James Bond (like) museum. The early bada$$ weapons like the hat you mentioned were all part of the cutting edge James Bond arsenal of the time. OF course all the cars were missing, though not needed for this. Madonna got so much backlash for the song not being traditional enough to the Bond franchise, so by incorporating all the weaponry, to me, was a true homage to the series. Plus DAD has North Korean villains and she was a fencing teacher in the movie. I thought she did a great job for the video. By no means a haphazardly thrown together movie soundtrack song/video.

"What It Feels Like for a Girl" is inspired by famous feminist film Thelma & Louise. Like Thelma and Louise, Madonna goes on a spree against the men. Her giving a large tip to waitress is a way of woman supporting woman. Her crushing and dying is similar how Thelma and Louise die in the end of the film.

Why not make 2021 the year for your discovery of one the most legendary male voices of our recent times - George Michael. He's only left us with four solo albums and two albums with Wham!, so it won't take you too long to go through his entire discography. You could dedicate a day to George Michael, record seven segments (with an extra segment to catch his non-album releases) and you could get a lot of work done for the year. And trust me, Eric, the day after your George Michael Day, you will ask yourself 'Why had it taken me so long to discover this gem?' You'll know what I mean after you hear Faith.

Great reaction! I love the vid and re-mixed version of, What It Feels like For A Girl. I’ve seen many negative comments over the years about this version, but I just like the vibe of this mix better vs the album version. And, I don’t know why, Die Another Day got so much backlash. I think it’s an awesome Bond theme song! Thanks for the break down on these great songs! And, my choices for your next reactions would be, if you haven’t already, Justify My Love, Erotica and Human Nature. Stay safe! 🙂✌🏻🙂

you are right about secret! she filmed it in harlem, new york city and said she wanted to showcase the beauty of that community because society thinks of it as poor and downtrodden. I think she might have lived there in the 80s all the videos from the music album explore male archetypes - the music video parodied the male hip hop artists of the time, don't tell me was the "cowboy poet" as she described it, and what it feels like for a girl the action hero/rebel

I have to comment, something I rarely do, because your listens and analyses of Tori Amos' two first albums were awesome. I felt and interpreted her music much like you did and found that exciting to no end! She's a lyrical magician that Tori. I do appreciate Madonna's work, especially the older albums. I think you would absolutely go BONKERS, as bonkers as you get anyway, if you took a listen to Aurora's discography. I'd begin from her first here as well. My understanding is that Secret was written from the perspective of a transgender persons internal struggle whilst being accepted in a new relationship. What it feels for a girl above and beyond remix is a classic and one of my favorites! I always interpreted the lyrics in this song to hint towards a play on the words, whereby there was the literal hidden desire for men to know what it feels like for a girl from a sexual perspective! Really enjoy watching your videos!

Madonna didn't discover Kabbalah until 2 years later during or after giving birth to her daughter Lourdes either late 96 or early 97. She wanteda belief system or a philosophy that would help her understand how the universe works in order to help her teach her daughter how life works and the meaning of it. But she has been soul searching and on a spiritual quest up until then studying Buddhism, Sufism, Hinduism, Taoism and other Eastern religions and philosophies. "I hope she finished her fries" LOL! I think she did because if you pause the video when she's about to release the bag that the fries came in you can tell that it's empty. Plus Madonna's not the type of person who likes to waste food even though she's a very rich person. Those were plastic sticks with suction cups at the end of them that she shot at the cops with. I think the general message of Die Another Day is about destroying your ego and finding inner peace by conquering or resolving the inner conflict or inner struggle with ourselves. You didn't laugh when she said " I need to lay down." That's her sense of humor. Enjoyed your reaction as always and your analysis and interpretations as well. The Madonna albums that I would like for you to react to are: Madonna Like a Virgin True Blue Hard Candy MDNA Rebel Heart Music videos: Everybody Burning Up Borderline Lucky Star Like a Virgin Material Girl Crazy For You Into The Groove Dress You Up Gambler Live To Tell Papa Don't Preach True Blue Open Your Heart La Isla Bonita Who's That Girl Cherish Vogue Justify My Love This Used To Be My Playground Erotica Deeper and Deeper Fever Rain I'll Remember Human Nature I Want You You'll See Love Don't Live Here Anymore You Must Love Me Don't Cry For Me Argentina Ray of Light Drowned World/Substitute For Love Power of Goodbye Nothing Really Matters Beautiful Stranger American Pie Music Don't Tell Me Hollywood Love Profusion Hung Up Sorry Get Together Jump Hey You 4 Minutes Give It 2 Me Miles Away Give Me All Your Luvin Girl Gone Wild Turn Up The Radio Living For Love Ghosttown Bitch I'm Madonna Medellin Crave I Rise Dark Ballet Batuke You can react to her compilations and greatest hits: You Can Dance The Immaculate Collection Something To Remember GHV2 Remix Revisited Confessions Remixed Celebration And her soundtracks: Who's That Girl Bloodhounds of Broadway I'm Breathless Evita The Next Best Thing And her tours: Virgin Tour Who's That Girl Tour Blond Ambition Tour The Girlie Show Drowned World Tour Reinvention Tour Confessions Tour Sticky and Sweet Tour MDNA Tour Rebel Heart Tour And there are her performances fromTV shows, award shows and charity concerts like Live Aid, Live 8 and Live Earth, etc.

Madonna is portraying a nightclub singer in "Secret," so technically she's inserting herself into the community, but she's playing a character who is in an interracial relationship and has a child. Some people believe that's the "secret" in the video but I don't think it was necessarily intended that way - the secret is just the beauty of Harlem and the people, which she wanted to pay tribute to. WIFLFAG is not my favorite but it's fun.

Your reactions never disappoint, so enjoyable to watch! While watching this one I wondered if you had watched her short documentary on the Madame X album? It's available on her KZbin channel now and it is appropriately called "The World of Madame X" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5O8k6eooKiGrKs). There she addresses the issue you keep going back to - cultural appropriation. I think watching this will give you more of an insight into that album, her work overall, and as you argue, her drive to lift, give visibility and pay homage to other cultures :)

I think it's also a little funny when she stops the car to throw her garbage into the garbage. I think it's a little nod to the differences between men and women, men in a murderous rampage would toss the fries out the window and not care, but a woman *would* care even in the midst of destroying the Patriarchy 🤣 Also, in die another day, Madonna is giving us a kabbalistic message. Kabbalah encourages enlightenment through the conquering of the ego. The Madonna in blk is the ego. Once the ego is killed, she can know the names of God and she liberates herself from death.
