I was there in the Chamberlain years. I suppose a forbidden mention of unwarranted negativity from certain high circles. Leonardo was probably like Wilt, pure genius, out of time. I remember a feeling I'd get after his championship seasons, the power of victory. And a downer buzz would be appearing on TV and the Media. Honest and independent, a threat. What a great man. .. .. the stories of his random games after retiring from basketball at Pauly Pavillion are precious.. Incomparable, and yes, it's complex. Enjoy..

WILT would be even faster and stronger today due to improved training, nutrition and shoes. Wilt ran sub 11 100m. 55 ft shot put. 40+ vertical. He was an incredible passer. Would anyone even score around him?
@tunanorth

Wilt did all of this playing every game in CHUCKS. its a miracle he lasted 1,000 games. Most great players of the "CHUCKS" era didn't even last that long. Imagine Wilt today, but playing 1,400-1,500 games or more in amazing custom shoes and with modern medical care and training. Players over 1400 games include Dirk, Vince Carter, Stockton, Malone [Karl and Moses], Kareem, Parish, and more. Lebron is at 1,316 as of this date, and another 10 active players are way past 1,000.

Olajuwon leads all-time blocks with about 3,800, but both Wilt and Russell would each have over 5,000 if they counted blocks back then!!! And Wilt was the only player to consistently block the Skyhook, basketball's most unblockable shot!!

We can figure out good Wilt would be in the modern era - he achieved similar stats when he was being guarded by Russell - widely regarded as the best defender ever. Wilt in the tail end of his career played Kareem to more or less a draw and was able to block his sky hook on occasion, something that virtually never happened. That was when Wilt had developed bad knees and picked up a lot of weight. A peak Wilt was much nimbler, faster, and his hops were off the chart. Check out Wilt's fade away - a 7" 2" (yeah, in todays shoes. Look how much taller Wilt was at 60 than Ewing and Shaq in that video where they meet) a 7" 2" guy of immense strength and unrivaled athleticism with a deadly fade away? That will score a lot today. Also, today pretty much any contact is a foul and you can't push and hand check. If Wilt got the ball near the basket all you could do is hack-a -Wilt because he would have been as unstoppable as Shaq. Wilt had Shaq's size and strength, even more of it, but he was WAY more athletic, covered the whole court like a guard with blazing speed and endurance. Wilt was SO fast and SO nimble and had unbelievable endurance and an absurd vertical - he would have been such an amazing defender, even against a spread out floor in the age of the 3. Wilt might have been MORE dominant today. Wilt just had the misfortune to have played against the greatest TEAM ever. Even winning two championships was quite an accomplishment when the Cetls ruled. BBall is a team sport - one guy makes a huge difference but it's till a team sport. For that reason championships are not the be all and end all in the GOAT discussion.

Ok, when he was leading the league in scoring he was also leading in FG%, which he did 9 times overall. and a feat Jordan never did once. So it's hard to argue selfishness when his shots counted for more than anyone else. And he played more minutes than anyone else, he hardly missed any part of the game. Blocks? No one blocked more. Led the league in rebounds 11 of his 13 years. That selfish? Offensively and defensively no one dominated more. Russell got the rings, but he also got all the rest of the Celtics team, coaching, and organization behind him. When Chamberlain had a good coach--twice--he headed the best two teams of the 60s and 70s. The Lakers with prime West and Baylor could never take down the Celtics. They were that good. Only Chamberlain's 76s did it. The 72 Lakers were actually not that great on paper. Both Wilt and West were in their twilight, and Baylor retired. But Sharman was a great coach. Here's the thing about Wilt. He was so good and so independent--arrogant in a lot of ways--that people are eager to bring him down. He mouthed off, he screwed lots white women, he partied hard--he pissed people off. He did it Wilt's way. I wonder if Ruth's reputation would have suffered similarly if the Yankees weren't winning so much? Guess it depends on what your standards of greatness are. Offensively and defensively, Wilt reigns supreme, but as the video points out, he didn't have an Auerbach harnessing his talent to a team end. Wilt was also expected to fulfill the coach function, and that's too much to expect of any player. This video nails it.

Chamberlain was the greatest ever.His era hurt him not helped him.bill was not better than wilt he had 9 hall of farmers on his team.Just like jordan not being able to beat bird in the 80s.Bird and the celtics swept jordan 2 years in a row.Thats right bird was 6-0 .against the great jordan.Does that make him better? After Arnold Schwarzenegger and Wilt worked on Conan the Destroyer, Arnold was interviewed during press junkets for the movie and asked about Wilt - Arnold stated that Wilt “bench pressed 500 pounds...”, and was “one the strongest people I’ve ever met...”. Wilt’s vertical reach was more realistically around 38” to 40”, with his maximum being in his early NBA career when he was 265-270 lbs around his 3rd or 4th season, because after his 5th or 6th season, he was around 300 lbs., retiring at 310-315.
