Watch the Dan Patrick’s interview with Tom Verducci, the only MLB journalist to have interviewed the Dodgers executives who met with Ohtani and their discussion and background to the contract, also Nez Balelo. You can also read his article in SI of this. People are so cynical that they will always find some ulterior motive, while Ohtani is uniquely sincere which also blew the Dodgers executives.

A dollar today is more important than a dollar tomorrow(10 years). So the true value of the contract is $460M is mind blowing.
@abcdef-h4n Жыл бұрын
@SNY you are forgetting about the time value of money. if the dodgers were willing to pay $70M per year for the first 10 years, and if ohtani said he'll defer most of it, then ohtani basically took a $232M pay cut to keep the dodgers competitive. it's that simple. -$232M=($46.8M-$70M)x10=(AAV - salary without accounting for the time value of money) x number of years. on the other hand, if the $70M per year for the first 10 years was never on the table, all this is just optics. i.e. this is not really a $700M contract. it is essentially a $468M contract, and the dodgers are getting charged as a $468M contract. illustratrion: any team that can pay $468M over 10 years can do the same thing as the dodgers. they just need to save $44.8M (=AAV minus $2M) each year and put it in an interest bearing account. then after 10 years, they'll have $68M to pay their player each year. any player can do it as well - a player that gets signed $468M over 10 years can save $44.8M of the $46.8M each year, and 10 years later, the player will have an income stream of $68M per year. of course you need to adjust the math for taxes, but the same argument holds. overall, i think the $468M (or $700M) over 10 years seems fair for ohtani given his injury this year. i.e. ohtani is getting paid what we thought he would get paid, between $450M to $500M because of the injury.

Give it a rest he DESERVED that money you know why? There is not a single player on the planet as talented as him period. Contract is utterly ridiculous but I guess it’s currently allowed, I mean what is to stop teams to convert some of their players contracts to similar deals. This deal has the potential to open up the floodgates and cause major problems down the road for MLB.
@neerajnongmaithem392 Жыл бұрын
They can't convert because no player other then ohtani would agree to this deal. He is literally taking a hit to his value but it does not matter to him since he make upwards of 40-45 million through endorsement money and this number will only grow bigger as he plays for the Dodger. In 2nd place trout makes 5 million outside of baseball. No other baseball players make so much outside that they can take such a big hit to their contract. Ohtani is literally taking a 240 million hit lost to inflation because he brought up this deal.

Whether it's $700 million or $680 million, it doesn't matter. It's STILL 10 years with the Dodgers for Ohtani. And $680 million is STILL a massive contract.

MLB teams get new stadiums at the expense of the taxpayer, the games are unaffordable to the average fan, the costs to watch the games on digital platforms amid the barrage of intrusive/annoying advertisements are a rip-off, the takeover of the game by gambling interests has diluted the spirit of the sport... MLB is digging its own grave.
@nrkgalt Жыл бұрын
I don’t think MLB is worried about any rival league threatening them. The only real threat would be if fully realistic CGI baseball was a thing. It may be in a few years, but if I was creating CGI sports, I would start with football. The players’ faces are obscured and there are things that could be done in CGI football that aren’t allowed in real life football, like helmet to helmet hits and horse collar tackles.
