Alien Weaponry is from Waipu, New Zealand, formed in 2010 by brothers Henry and Lewis de Jong. The band consists of Lewis de Jong (guitar and vocals), Henry de Jong (drums), and Ethan Trembath (bass guitar). All three members have Māori ancestry and several of their songs are written in te reo Māori Kai Tangata video is a thrill-seeking one where warrior tribes battle, using rifles and wooden weaponry. "Some people might find it a bit grisly,” says singer and lead guitarist Lewis de Jong. “But it’s stuff that actually happened and nobody ever talks about it. We’re not saying it’s right or wrong, it’s just a part of our history.” This track refers to "nga tohu a Tūmatauenga," the symbols of Tūmatauenga - the Māori god of war," and its from here where the band derives the album's name. “Quite a few of the songs on the album are about battles or conflict,” says drummer Henry de Jong, who was also responsible for the lyrics of "Kai Tangata. " He continues, "So we thought it was appropriate to name the album after Tūmatauenga. Tū also means to stand strong and proud, to stand for something; which we think is important as a band and as people.”

From my admittedly limited knowledge of the culture... Tattoos are extremely important and symbolic in the culture. There are no arbitrary tattoos, they all have a meaning, and are only given after significant events for the individual... Basically tattoos are earned so to speak. The face tattoos are the most significant of them if I remember correctly. If you are into tattoos, then it is worthwhile to look into, even for those who are not into them personally, may find it an interesting subject.

To add to Pam's comments, kirituhi is what non Maori wear. My Pakeha partner has a beautiful one depicting both Tangaroa (the god of the sea) in respect to the ocean which he has great reverence for and Tumatauenga (the god of war), as he served in the military. As well as referencing his turangawaewae (the places he is connected to) and our daughter.

In significance and in prominence of placement, plus all the other aspects, I don't think any other cultures can match. Recently another youtuber made a reaction to this song, he mentioned wanting a tattoo done in this traditional manner, but learned of the importance and thought it inappropriate. I don't know if there are any types that are allowed by outsiders, or if something could be done using the technique, but not in style. He works in the music industry and travels a lot, and mentioned going there when working with bands on tour.

Hey dude. It's extra awesome you enjoyed and reacted to this video. Alien Weaponry need all the attention they can get, since they are literally keeping the Maori language alive through their music! Though I've gotta say, the thumbnail with MS Paint tattoos is kind of disrespectful. I know you don't mean any harm, but it's a similar problem to donning red face and wearing indigenous American head dresses. Facial tattoos in Maori culture are a sign of social status, power and prestige, and given how the Maori faced genocide and cultural erasure by colonialists like native Americans did? It's somewhat insulting to reduce it to a funny thematic doodle. Again, I know you're not trying to be racist or anything, and giving the band a boost helps them spread their message. If you could change the thumbnail to be without the facial tattoos, that'd be grand. Thanks, and keep up the awesome work! =3

That is definitely NOT face paint. Those are actual tattoos. The tattoos that are 'tapped' on are said to be EXTREMELY painful. Not to mention they hold a lot of meaning for the wearer. And if you notice, the placements are on places that would feel a lot of pain, such as the face and thighs. The whole sticking out the tongue bit during the tribal dance is a scare tactic and is used for intimidation. I believe a Maori futbol team does the same to their opponents.

The bandmates are direct decendants of the Maori, and thats y they used the native New Zealand language. The tattooing done is basically the origins of tribal tattoos. The face paint warriors usually were tattooed on their face, and the dance (Haka) is what they did before battle as a form of intimidation. Great band and videos

As a kiwi coming into this nearly 2 years after the fact; I appreciate your comments at the start of the vid :) Certainly was not a situation we are (or god-forbid will ever be) familiar with, and it's nice to know people saw that at the time.

These guys literally live up the road from me...I've managed to see them live a couple of times locally. They're making a huge impact overseas in Europe and the US. Good on them too, they've got a very promising future if they stick to their roots, I think that's what sets them apart from other heavy metal bands!

Hearing Americans try to pronounce the word Maori never gets old
@digi7altrauma7925 жыл бұрын
I'd like to hear you pronounce Lakȟótiyapi (the language of the Lakota tribe) and see if you have a better result with a language you don't have any experience with. Not taking the piss, just showing you the other side.
@campbellholt12205 жыл бұрын
@@digi7altrauma792 oh no I completely get it doesnt mean it's not funny. Most Americans add a y in when they say it so mayori I find it funny. But I get why they can't say it the vowels are a bit different

Sigh... I lost the comment I typed out. Tldr was- You laughed, and I face palmed. I don't know how the average person, of any modern culture, has no idea who the Maori are just from the Haka or the Ta moko. Even more so when Alex spoke about how he loves tattoos.... "facepaint" *headdesk*
@campbellholt12205 жыл бұрын
@@digi7altrauma792 I mean I get it new Zealand isnt a big country and even tho the haka has become pretty well known people dont put in any effort to learn how to pronounce the words which is okay it's not where there from but I do love here we learn alot about the maori from a young age I hope more countries will teach about their native people more

I love metal that is in different languages. It becomes a new kind of ambient environment that does not interfere with your thought process because you do not know the lyrics, so you have no urge to focus on them and sing along. Also, to see the different type of vocals and chorus that you can achieve within that language. Sometimes it is unique to that language specifically but one thing that has always impressed me is the melody and harmony that is created in that specific tongue where even if it at times it does not rhyme, it still sounds pleasing to the ear. Though the literal translation, may not. It is just a shining example of the universal nature of music. With this video I totally got the history lesson, as it is an infamous tale of the influence Christian conquistadors had over native culture; be they for better or worse, usually worse. At the same time, the incorporation of the band in those historical scenes is like an homage to the ancestors by playing a new version of their battle cry. To show that even in today's generation(s), their story has not been forgotten.
