Dool was another great album. Great discovery for the year. Julie Christmas did a fantastic album with Cult of Luna a few years back. This album was very very good.

You're gonna love Lowen. Her voice is stunning. I went in blind with this album, then I looked them up, and it turns out I'm subscribed to her KZbin channel, which is pretty cool. I found it a few years back when I was watching year-end lists.

Happy New Year Questy. This is actually a pretty good list minus Kerry King, Bruce Dickinson, Bring Me the Horizon, Zeal & Ardor, and Leprous. I so agree with Blood Incantation, Ulcerate, High on Fire, Nails, Winterfylleth, Opeth, Job for a Cowboy, and Judas Priest though. The new Oranssi Pazuzu was also one of my favorites of last year but if you didn’t like it that’s fine, to each their own. The Obsessed is an amazing doom metal band and their new album deserved to be on the list. Anything Scott Wino touches whether it’s the Obsessed or Saint Vitus is gold. Lunar Womb and the Church Within are classic doom metal albums worth checking out.

This list was full of albums and bands I've never heard before lmao, kind of surprising. Its like the guys in these major publications listen to a completely different sphere of metal from metal youtubers and redditors etc where I usually take my recommendations and new discoveries from.

Slift is fantastic and belongs on any year-end list. Sub Pop is just the record label. Famous Seattle based label known for all the big Grunge bands

One of my fav metal records was Benighted with Ekbom. Don't see that on too many lists, but I thought it was great!

Hauntologist. Abhorration . Mitochondrion. Veilburner. Fractal generator. These are all amazing in my opinion, wouldn't expect Metal Hammer to put them on a list though! Love that Chelsea Wolfe album too , metal adjacent, I'd say , some shades of Portishead , industrial etc. Thanks for the content!

My number 1 is Hippotraktor Stasis. This bands style is close to perfect for my personal taste, similar ish to Dvne which was also in my top 3.

as someone who loves Gothic metal like the Gathering, Type O Negative, Theatre of Tragedy, new Tribulation was weak, compared to the other albums Tribulation has done Go back to making Black/Death metal please. The obsessed is great, really good trad/Doom metal band, their album Lunar womb I definitely recommend checking out.

Kalandra is my top discovery of 2024, although I don't know why it is in top 50 metal albums? They are more of an indie pop / rock band with folkish elements. Soothing, ethereal and relaxing music with lovely female vocals. Absolutely nothing to do with metal (maybe MH thinks having occasional distorted guitars qualify them?).

Loudwire's list was trash and felt like a popularity contest, it didn't make me want to check out the albums I didn't know. While Metal Hammer looks like they put in effort and made a decent list with lots of solid underground albums. It missed a lot of my favorites, but they made me want to check out several albums I didn't know. Personally, my top ten are the new Orgone, Aquilus, Blood Incantation, Piah Mater, Caligula's Horse, Frost*, Iotunn, Wintersun, In Vain, and Azure albums. I listened to 56 2024 albums, mostly metal, nine made Metal Hammer's list, but only two made it to my top ten.

My list is pretty much all prog. It’s hands down my favourite genre so I pretty much didn’t check out anything else this year. I probably need to broaden my horizons but I love prog of any kind too much. At least you can pretty much stick progressive with any other genre so I’m not completely closed minded.

If there’s 1 thing you do that separates you (focus on this for more success) it’s talking about metal OTHER than Death & Black Metal & actually appreciating funner & seeping things than constant repetitive screaming. There’s other things one can enjoy & liking the sound of music + it being approachable to outsiders is how the genre continues. Repugnant genres will never be mainstream nor should it be the goal, but melodic genres have actual potential of pulling interest from others, in turn continuing rocks success & therefore folks will get more of that aggressive stuff, from new voices & sounds instead of stale same-y stuff for all time. Young folks invent new genres & metal NEEDS DESPERATELY new genres & not really in the dark & ‘evil’ (gimmick for sales generally) style. Melody & harmony
