Yeah just to confirm that was completely the game's fault on Phil's death, in that version of the game you have to place water or have slow falling, but it wasn't well known at the time so he just got glitched

5:22 the reason he died was that when a shield gets hit, it gets disabled for one tick before going back up, and since there were two creepers that blew up at the same time, it disabled the shield after the first one blew up.

5:30 the Skeleton behind the Creeper hit the shield first, and the Creeper blew up in the split second that the shield went under cooldown. Also, Phil's iconic S2 death was a few days after 1.14 was released, so it was incredibly unlikely he had an abundance of Totems.

Lesson in this video: 1. if you're playing minecraft hardcore and than you make something in real life always pause the game, if on multiplayer leave and then join when back 2. if there's a creeper and then you have shield, QUICKLY EQUIP THE SHIELD AND YOU'RE SAVE 3. always use elytra if you're near the void 4. always becareful and patient when you're at hardcore world

So, I think what happened was the character was standing on a gravel block which was on top of Lava. And when the water started flowing the block updated and the gravel block fell through the lava along with the player. And now the water turned the lava on the surface into obsidian and the player died unable to break the obsidian to get out.

5:30 When the shield is nearly broken, it doesn’t protect you from something that would do more damage to the shield than the durability it has left. I tested it in a creative world, and a creeper typically causes about 20-36 damage to a shield (depending on how close you are to the creeper) without unbreaking, so his probably had less than that.
