Some people love her squeaks, some don't. It's ok if you aren't her growls, I love the growls, it adds the grit of the emotion and I still thoroughly enjoyed your honest, raw reaction. Some people receive music more obviously, it's like watching a flower bloom. You have that quality that's why you're interesting to watch and your thoughtful comments are well put. Of course the growl and the micro squeak would not be right in a real Broadway setting but it was perfect for this one. Standing there alone, nothing around her to add any dramatic effect but it was the growl, the micro squeak and her heart and soul that draws you into the feel the song. It was perfect.

I like that you were honest about your not being a fan of the growls ! I could tell in your face that you were not. That being said I love them. I'm not always a fan of Christina's , as you mentioned , but with Mori it really encapsulated the emotional transferrence expressed right there and bled wonderfully into the all out belting that came next. I love Sarah as well and her creation of this song is extraordinary but if you listen to hers after Mori it just doesn't carry the emotion the way Morissette does and we all know she is not in Mori's class as a power vocalist. I said VOCALIST haters!!!! As an artist Sarah is a freaking GENIUS. That's why she is a grammy winner and Mori is still mostly a regional artist still searching for WORLD acclaim . How great would it be if Sarah wrote Mori a song??? Like chocolate and vanilla best of both worlds. Thanks for supporting Mori she needs to be known by all music loving people like us.

Try Defying Gravity on this same channel. She did 6 Broadway songs in 1 sitting. She is so versatile. How many pop singers can pull this off? I believe one of the ladies who plays the main character does sing this song with growls however I do agree that it is a stylistic choice.

As you stated, growls are a personal choice. The growls, is what's missing in Sara's original. if you ever hear someone in deep anguish, crying. Like at a funeral, where someone has lost a loved-one. I've deep moans and growls. To me, Morissette's version has more soul and imparts more sorrow and the pain she's feeling, to the audience. As you said, it's personal. I think the growl that I can't get out of my head was in her cover of "stone cold" the one after her belt. Actually I think that's the only growl that made me take notice and ask wtf is that? I didn't even know what to call it. I understand your feelings regarding the growls in this song. I'm not familiar with musical theater or the original version of this so I can't really tell what belongs or doesn't.

What a powerhouse rendition I think it's an emotional stream that carries so much dynamite behind the landscape portrayed in this musical, and it takes one on quite a voyage.. I have been listening to a version by Jeremy Jordan from a fund raiser for American theater. His is an emotional sand papering for me for some of the reasons you have descried. The same feelings engendered by Morissette's wonderous version. Thanks for your, spot on views on many, many performers in all sorts of genre's. your wide ranging tastes for music are always refreshing to wander through when I can carve out time to indulge myself. I took your advice and listened to the Sara Bareilles video. I very much liked her performance. It is amazing how Morrissette added so much emotion to her version with really just a few embellishments. Like you, I was not surprised to see her do this. She seems to live in every song she sings. But it remains important that, if Sara Bareilles had not written the song, we would never have been able to hear Morrisette pull on our heartstrings.

I have to say, Adam, that you are, by far, THE greatest reactor there is. I love your thorough attention and insightful sensitivity you give to each artist. Your absolutely right about the value music theatre has for a singer. I think the most important lessen is that when you're singing it's done in character. Something that more singers should consider. It brings greater meaning and authenticity to the song. This is certainly a lessen the Morissette has used in all of her music. And point well taken on the excessive growling. Sara does a little growl a few times in the climax of her version, but not to the extent that Morissette does. I think a well placed growl can be an effective intensifier, but it tends to lose it's affect if it is overdone.

I saw Jessie Mueller 3 different nights on Broadway and she growled in all 3 performances. Allison Luff also growled on her Broadway performance. Shoshana Bean also sung this with growls on Broadway. Lucie Jones did this song with a growl in West End London. Sarah Bareilles (Broadway & West End,) Jordin Sparks (Broadway) and Katherine McPhee (West End) didn't.
