I think these reading tracking websites should include a feature to show from which countries authors are... it seems most of us (or me at least) read a lot of European/western literature, but very little from other parts of the world... visualising this could maybe prompt people to pick out books from other parts of the world as well
@macylightfoot3 жыл бұрын
The storygraph does reading challenges that encourage people to read more from other countries. They put up the prompts and users can add books to each one so you end up with loads of recommendations from different places, and you can see which countries you've read from and which you haven't.
@oliverxhmll3 жыл бұрын
English translations of books aren't always good. They often don't capture what the author had in mind. For example, I'm Polish and the English translation of the witcher books is horrendous. I think I'd rather read something that's well written rather than reading books based on the author's geographical location
@macylightfoot3 жыл бұрын
@@oliverxhmll well yeah, there's lots of translations that aren't great, but there's lots that are. I don't think you can write off every single book not originally written in a language you speak though, just because the translation might be bad. But again that's where the storygraph is good because you can join one of the books in translation challenges and see a huge list of books that you might not have known about otherwise. I would say it's up to the individual reader to look into the quality of translation themselves, which is relatively easy to do by clicking through the lists and reading a few reviews.
@melaniek67143 жыл бұрын
@@oliverxhmll Interesting point! I'm German and I find most English translations of books I like to at least be acceptable (better than people not reading them at all if they don't speak the language), and the German ones of English books to be really good for the most part... I also often read foreign classics where I'm hoping the English/German translations are at least decent. I would guess with a more niche book that might not sell so well, publishers probably hire less skilled/experienced translators which might miss the character/intent of the original

Stop comparing yourself to others. This is YOUR reading journey, enjoy the journey! Happy New Year and Happy reading folks! 😊

Some of the genres at The Storygraph are meant for non fiction books only - e.g. race, politics, sociology, feminism etc. So a fiction book that covers issues like racism doesn't count under race. On the other hand, some are meant exclusively for fiction - Historical, Mystery, SciFi etc. Hope that clears some things up! :) if you ever stumble across a book that you think has been miscategorized (pace, mood, genre) feel free to send a ticket and a librarian will take a look at it. :)

It really focuses on themes of cultural diversity and integration, immigration, refugees, race, gender identity, different neurotypes, different relationships, etc, in the most beautiful, quirky, funny and hopeful way. My favourite was definitely book 2: A Closed and Common Orbit. It's a 4-book series, and they need to be read in order.

I don't know if anyone cares but here are the five best books a complete stranger (me) read in 2021: Rebecca (Daphne Du Maurier) Children Act (Ian McEwan) Mythos (Stephan Fry) A movable Feast (E. Hemingway) A Handful of Dust (Evelyn Waugh)

I joined Storygraph, too, when you jumped earlier, and I really appreciate you giving us the heads up! I’d love to hear maybe on this channel a bit more about how you started your company, too. I love custom designing my own planners, so I’d be interested in the business side of things.

I have a little note book as a reading log and counting and doing stats is like the best thing at the end of the year, it‘s like the closest thing to a diary that i‘ve done for 5 years straight. And if you read in multiple languages it‘s always nice to keep track of that too

25 books in 2021!! which is nothing compared to your terrifying rate of literature consumption lol but was an achievement for me cause it's 10 more than last year and I managed it on top of my first year doing a-levels. your youtube channel has made a massive difference for me in motivation to read more and has led me to new authors and books which I've enjoyed so much. thank you and have a happy new year!

Advice for reading long non-fiction books is to read it gradually whilst reading fiction between it. This is a really good way to get into more non-fiction books and take away the intimidation from long books. Hope I can help someone :)

in terms of storygraph genre categorizations: things are very frequently multi-genre, but books that fall under the "Race" and "Politics" tags are almost always going to be non-fiction, memoirs, or poetry collections (at least from what I've seen). It would be awesome to see those tags expanded to include fiction, but I think right now, those tags only apply to books that discuss and explain race and politics without fictional elements.

So Jack, I just wanted to let you know that I've added most of the books you've recommended in your past few videos to my reading list and I'm VERY excited to buy them. Maybe not spend all my money, but the books are tempting

if you want to get over your big book fear, Sanderson's works are a good place to start - it's fantasy, but most of it is quite fast-paced and the characters are very well fleshed out. And would be interesting to get a review of his works from someone like you, who isn't necessarily a fantasy enthusiast

There was me thinking my 1 book a week was an achievement! Well done Jack. My mission this year is to read more non-fiction. This year I was still trying to get through old classics. My two favourites this year were ‘Watership Down’ by Richard Adams, and ‘Catch 22’ by Joseph Heller. Hope everyone succeeds in their reading goal this upcoming year :)

I read 73% 300-499 paged books, only 1% nonfiction, my top genres were Young Adult, Fantasy, Scifi, and Romance. My most read authors were Margaret Peterson Haddix (I read two series' by her) and Marissa Meyer (absolutely adore, she wrote some of my favorites). I also had the biggest reading spike in March which is interesting.

Last video of the year! Can't wait to begin next year's journey with you (such a bummer that I only discovered you this August.) I hope you have a wonderful 2022 and it only brings you the best things, because that's what you deserve. Discovering your channels was one of the best things that happened to me this year, so thank you very much. Lots of love, hugs, and kisses. See you next year! 😘💜
