It's not a chicken tree topper. It's an angel holding a red poppy flower, for remembering and honoring veterans and their families on Christmas. Praying the angels will watch over them and bring them home safe. (That one is my tree.)

There's a street about 20 minutes from me and its a circle with about maybe 20 houses? Every house is decorated over the top....and the cars of people driving through are bumper to bumper to admire the lights and decorations. As a neighborhood what they do is get together and plan it out (so no duplicates maybe?) and they have barrels at the entrance to the street and the exit and what they do is collect non perishable food donations for the local food banks. It's a great idea as far as I'm concerned :) Normally I do a fair bit of decorating but having lost my hubby last summer my heart really isn't into it so much but I did get my tree up - and kind of decorated - and my son put the lights up outside for me. So I still have a bit of Christmas to lift my spirits. Have a safe and merry Christmas everyone

Nice display of decorations. Our small town has a Festival of Lights, where a couple of clubs put up lights in the park. When we went, it was about 20 degrees with a lot of wind. I thought I was going to freeze to death. The grandson loved it.

There's a house at the top of a hill near where I used to live. They had a large (several hundred foot) pine tree that everyone could see as they came into town from the freeway. I guess they had money, because every year they hired a company to decorate it using cranes, etc. It was a real sight for everyone. Unfortunately the tree fell down one year after a storm.

Back in the 1970s in southern California, when I was a child, they couldn't put up lights due to restrictions because of an energy crisis. We also could only get gas on a certain day, depending on the number on our car license plate. It used to be that Christmas lights really raised your electrical bill, but I believe a lot of lights are now LEDs, so they don't use a lot of electricity. Before the energy crisis, whole neighborhoods would go all out with decorations at Christmas. We used to drive around to the different neighborhoods to see the lights. After the energy crisis, people stopped doing so much. I live in Portland Oregon now and there are a few neighborhoods you can go to that still do lights and decorations, but not very many. Our local zoo totally decks itself out in lights and decorations to entice people to come to the zoo. We can also drive to the Portland International Speedway to drive around and look at all the lights that they put up. It costs money to get into the zoo and the speedway charges per car.

That was in the early 70's, when Jimmy Carter was president. It was a sad year. No one had their houses lit up outside. Gas rationing was the pits. I Sar in my car freezing my butt off at the gas station at 4:30 in the AM because it was MY day to get gas, and I was running on fumes. As daylight broke, I saw a sign in the window of the station that said...SORRY OUT OF GAS!

Train sets were popular in about the 1950's to the 1970's as Christmas presents. It was common for Santa to have them set up to circle the trees so the kids could see it on Christmas Day. My little sister got one by Lionel Trains-a quality toy company. Too big for the tree, but we enjoyed it immensely. There are people who spend their lives on their hobby of electric trains. I've seen displays off miniature trains with their tracks running through miniature countryside with many different miniatures either bought or created. And speaking of miniatures, there are ceramic miniature houses (not doll houses-that is a unique hobby in itself) with miniature people, neighborhood fixtures like lamps mail boxes, decorations, benches, a mirror for a pond to skate on, and other buildings: drug store, candy store, maybe a leather tack, maybe a music store (can't say record store anymore!). There are high end department stores like Macy's that sell lines of ceramic miniature village pieces, and they cost a pretty penny! At one time my mom had a 7-foot (210 cm) dining room table filled with these miniatures with people. I supplied Santa Claus. But he seemed more like Father Christmas, but dressed in blue. Does that mean he's Father Frost instead? (Russian)

Growing up, we had two trees. A 9-footer in the living room (my dad would go out into the woods, climb up with my oldest brother, and they would cut off the top) decorated with all our really nice stuff, and about a 3-footer downstairs that we kids would decorate with popcorn, pine cones, and chains made of construction paper. Once my youngest sibling was old enough that she didn't need something she could safely decorate, we just had the one tree upstairs. Then we moved to Florida and all of our trees sucked. We couldn't just go out in the woods and find a really good one, just had to take whatever half-dead crap they had at the lot.

These are nice pictures, but Lewis, you have to see the displays all around the US. Entire blocks with TONS of lights. Some of these people start decorating their houses in September! There is a community near me in Yucaipa, CA, where 16 houses are all connected by one master computer and the lights are set to music. Another one in Rancho Cucamonga CA called Thouroughbred Farm where there is a 2 hour wait to get to the houses on the weekdays, 3-4 hours on the weekends. Hubby and I are going to a commercial light show at our local ZOO this week with millions of lights. My sister in Phoenix AZ just went to her zoo, and the lights are amazing. Seriously amazing. We only put out minimum lights outside our house this year and only for a few hours. Inside is another story. I'll have to find a way to send you my inside lights. We are on the old side of life now, so it takes us forever to set up our trees. We have a 5 ft and a 16 inch tree. I don't know how to work Instigram anymore, or when you go live. All I know is that L I don't is 9 hours difference from California.

My ex husband's step mother used to have a Christmas tree in (almost) every room and each tree had a different theme. Plus a huge Christmas village that took up a whole room, and the village itself had its own Christmas tree in the village's center. The table for the village was built specifically for it & each building in the village was hand painted by her. She just loves Christmas. BTW, a lot of people decorate their homes with a tree in every room. Some people even have 20 - 30 foot trees in their homes because they have high 50 foot ceilings. So it really just varies, of course, some are better off than others and can afford to do that, but I think the majority of households have 1 to 2 trees. 1 for the formal living room and one in the family room. Personally, my kids are grown and out of my home so I don't even bother decorating. But my middle daughter is pregnant with my first grand baby. She is due on Valentine's Day so I'm already thinking of decorating next year for my grand baby's first Christmas. 🎄❤😊

When I was young my parents had friends that were beyond extra at Christmas, this will take a minute. First off their display grew to encompass the neighbors on either side, who were fine with it as they got an awesome display and their electric bill paid for the time the display was up(important info), I heard they spent like $6,000 in the 1980's(around $22,972.79 today). Now we are talking very lawn decoration and lights you could see it from blocks away. Now then their house, every window had a tree, the entire inside decked out, in the driveway a full sized sleigh in the driveway. He and his wife would dress as Mr. and Mrs. Claus and take photos in the sleigh with children and whomever else wanted them. They handed out candy canes a fresh gingerbread cookies and though people would donate money for the fun(which was donated to charity) they preferred either food donations for local pantries or a new toy for toys for tots charity. This was in Illinois and people came from all over the state and Wisconsin(they had a guestbook you could sign if you liked), it was a sad day for my folks when my dad transferred to Georgia however life is weird and those same neighbors moved to Georgia like 2 miles from my parents, they bought a home with a ton of property and the following Christmas a new tradition started, full village, lol. People don’t lose their minds over the decorations anymore, it’s all about that big ticket item and even when they get it, they still don’t seem very happy, the charm of the holiday is gone. I live in Florida now and 2 maybe 3 people have lights up, no one cares or can afford it anymore. I agree with you Christmas needs snow on Christmas Eve and day, then it can buggar off until next year, lol. Happy, merry everything.

There are entire neighborhoods that decorate like crazy. At one near me, the city even shuts down some streets & cars line up & follow a path with Cops directing traffic. My friend's parents live there, it's a well known neighborhood. All the kids are grown but they all go every weekend begining in October to start building it up and getting it ready for the December 1st kick off. On the weekends all the neighbors basically turn it into a tailgating style party and wave at the cars that cannot stop. Each weekend they invite different friends to join them. I've gone as a spectator and invited guest. Both are fun.
