I'm a Christian & a lot of them are tripping over Halloween. Most of them celebrate Halloween in everything but name. They call it "Fall Festival" or some other variant. There's a local church here that has that & it's Halloween all the way with costumes, candy & games. It's just not scary. That's usually one of the highlights of the day for us. It's too bad there's COVID-19 otherwise we would have had it this year. I don't go to that church, but I like that their coffee shop helps women owned businesses in foreign countries. I really like TikTok, but I think people troll there more than usual. It's actually a damn shame you have to make videos to defend or explain your opinions when most of us get it just fine. If people only knew how much of our daily lives stem from other cultures & traditions. Even the English language is a blend of multiple languages (which is why I hate when ignorant people say to just "learn English". It's not an easy language when you're not a native speaker). Keep making your videos & let the haters stay salty!

I think pretty much every religion does. I feel like it's less the religion that's important, and more your overall values and daily routines. For example, it would suck to regularly have your husband eating pork in front of you if you were Muslim, and it would be difficult if you had different ideas about what morals to raise your kids with. It's one of those things I personally don't think should be outright banned by a religion, but it definitely makes sense when any religion discourages it (plus, it would make it more difficult for the religion to grow).

As a Mexican Wiccan, thank you for addressing the issue with Halloween. I celebrate Samhain and Día de los Muertos, and people are often surprised how little it actually has to do with the modern conception. It is very respectable and understandable that certain cultures and religions do not conform to this particular celebration.
@victoriashevlin85873 жыл бұрын
I'm born and (mostly) raised in Ireland. You not only nailed the pronunciation of Samhain (CONGRATULATIONS), you noted correctly that it did indeed originate from the Celtic religion (in particular the Irish Celts). Its festival was appropriated by the catholic church, and it became Halloween. The candy aspect was introduced by the sweet factories in America. But the masks, a lot of the games, jack-o-lanterns, they were taken from the old religion. Then again, this was common practice for the Church to do as they ventured forth to colonise and convert. Christmas, for example, they merged their own holiday with the already existing pagan Mid-Winter festival such as Yule, Jul and Solatice. Again originating traditions such as the Yule Log, a candle in the window, the Christmas tree, the Holly and the Ivy, are all now deeply enmeshed with Christmas, but are wholly pagan in origin.
@UIAL5703 жыл бұрын
And we all be forgetting that people every year are making fun of pagans who actually celebrate Samhain. They make fun of and demean their every tradition. Getting kids dressed up, (the Celts used to literally make themselves look dead to ‘ward off’ what they believed to be ghosts) Giving out candy (the Celts left out food for their dead relatives - like literally a place at the dinner table with real, home cooked food, and left apples and other food outside to appease evil spirits from entering their homes) Jack-o-lanterns were not cute to the pagans, they used it to scare off ghosts. And they even used turnips originally because that’s what they had, pumpkins came later on. There’s a multitude of other things I don’t have time to list. I’m a Muslim (and Irish!) and I don’t believe in any of this especially not ghosts but just a reminder to people that many celebrate a pagan holiday and cheapen it so they can get dressed up in disgraceful outfits, get drunk, high and cause trouble.

Hi, former catholic here and I studied Christian theology at university 🙋 super late to the party, but Halloween IS a catholic holiday - it’s All Hallow’s Eve, which precedes the following day, All Saints Day, on which we’re supposed to feast to celebrate all of our saints. All Hallows’ Eve is a day to pray and fast in preparation for the feast the following day. There is some controversy around the placement of this holiday due to it coinciding with the pagan holiday of samhein, during which the barrier between the spirit and living world thins and allows for communication with the dead. So depending on your beliefs, Halloween could be a pagan OR a Christian holiday! Your research was correct, Ninja Mommy :)

And honestly how can you raise a family and maintain a good relationship when your very basis for living is your religion and the two spouses differ in it? The things one spouse might hold dear could be meaningless to the other. It just wouldn’t work. Btw, Muslim men can marry Jewish, Muslim or Christian women. Muslim women can only marry Muslim men. Since men are the protectors and maintainers of women, their source of income is important, money made off riba (interest, the Jews are famous for it), alcohol, cigarettes or illegal substances is completely unlawful and a sin to use. It’s a woman’s right to be taken care of in Islam, a god fearing man will have the best behavior toward her and the safety of her heart and soul at heart, and a Muslim man has these values.

"I'm pretty sure Christians know their religion better than Google does" if anything, Chirstians and Catholics tend know the least about their religion, it's origins, and what they're supposed to practice. Obviously there are exceptions, but a lotttt of people who consider themselves Catholic/Christian practice really loosely and know quite little.

That’s just not true. We Christians know a lot about our religion. Others probably weren't complaining and just wanted to educate her.

I was raised Catholic and I was taught that Halloween is “All Hallows Eve” because it is the day before All Saints day. All saints say is when we celebrate the Catholic Saints who have gone on to heaven. Kids originally dressed up as the saints on the day before. I don’t really know how the scary costume aspect was brought in and the giving of candy and all that stuff. I know the day itself is not specifically a church holiday though, it just might i’ve originated from one. Idk if any of this is actually correct, it’s just what i was taught in catholic school.

Halloween is a Christian holiday, but we call it All Hallows' Eve, Halloween is just a different name (clearly coming from the same source, so they can be seen as interchangeable names), therefore no need to apologise, your research was correct! There's either some Christians out there who need to brush up on their own faith, or the Christians who were saying it's not a Christian holiday were referring to the Americanised Halloween traditions such as dressing up as the devil etc. which obviously we wouldn't get on board with, hope this clears it up!

Where do you get this information? What branch of Christianity is that? I’ve never heard of that and I’m Christian hahaha
@cvb793 жыл бұрын
@@HannahDaniel-po2zr Halloween is the evening before the Christian holy days of All Hallows' Day (also known as All Saints' or Hallowmas) on 1 November and All Souls' Day on 2 November, thus giving the holiday on 31 October the full name of All Hallows' Eve (meaning the evening before All Hallows' Day), and this is the case for all of Christianity, it doesn't (or shouldn't) differ between denominations. Also, to answer how I know this: Having a basic grasp of my faith, if you want to have more knowledge then do some research.
@cvb793 жыл бұрын
@Lunar Eclipse That's incorrect, you are talking about Samhain, that's not the same as All Hallows' Eve, they come from different roots but just happen to be marked around the same time of year, they are not interchangeable and are separate things. Also, your mother is not talking about the Christian holy day of All Hallows' Eve, I'm sorry to say but she is mistaken, it's simply untrue, those kinds of things have nothing to do with Christianity and are entirely secular and more than likely Americanised.

So a lot of these things that most of us take as normal (and don’t know the origins of) but you don’t do, like the birthday candles thing, when you explain where the practice comes from it makes sense.

It’s simple things like that we never think about because it’s just always been there for us. Also, I want to point out for anyone saying your religion has too many rules. Most other religions also have a lot of rules if you really look at it. The Bible is literally a book of rules for Christianity. It would seem like a lot too if someone was giving you all the information at once as well. Another point is that most Christians don’t even follow all of their set rules. Don’t be mad at someone else for following their religion completely. And I’m not even religious at all.

Oh my goodness thank you so much for talking about the gifts at birthday parties!!! I'm the exact same way with my kids! When I was maybe 8 or 9, my dad threw me a birthday party at a skating rink, and looking back as an adult, this was a pretty nice skating rink and probably cost him a pretty penny. So, of course, I invited all my friends. Well, one friend said she couldn't come, and when I asked why...she was maybe a little too honest than her parents would like lol She said that it was because they couldn't afford to buy me a gift. Which I said was okay, she should come anyway, but of course, she didn't :( And I couldn't understand why she still couldn't come and eat pizza and cake and skate. Which as an adult now, I understand better, but it still makes me sad. So whenever any of my kids have a party or a get together for their birthday, I always make a point of saying we won't be opening gifts, and then tell this story and that I do that because I don't want anyone to feel like they can't come just because of a silly gift. Up until now, I was the only one I've known who's done that lol
