8:38 I think in both reviews (old and recent) you make a point they beat him up for mingling with Carver’s wife, but instead it is clearly because Bond, in his usual manner, informs Carver that he knows about him interfering with GPS signal and throwing British ship off course. Hence the line during the beating: “You seem very concerned about Mr. Carver's business.”

The Tomorrow Never Lies rumour is probably also perpetuated by Pulp's song being called that. Of course it's likely that they just changed the title when it was rejected? Either way, having the song floating around likely only keeps the rumour going... Excellent video as always!

@jamesatkinsonja

Pulp do have a song-'I Spy- on the previous years 'Mission Impossible' soundtrack album. Like a lot of 90's tie in albums, it's songs 'inspired by the film' so only a few actually show up in it.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
It's interesting as 'Radiohead' were able to release there demo as 'Spectre' but maybe Pulp would have met a copyright issue if they didn't change the title, hence picking something that sounds like the original but is different [like how a lot of 'parody' songs do] which might have started the rumour. Like you, I wondered if the title story was an 'urban myth' like a lot of Bond stories [I keep seeing 'That Shirley Bassey song should have been the theme for 'Quantum' when David Arnold confirmed it was written after the film was released for example].
@davidjames579

. It's funny as I Spy is something of a parody of spy life. It probably would be a good summing up of Harry Palmer and one of Le Carre's anti heroes in talking about the mundane doings of a basic level surveillance officer. I like to think the person compiling the soundtrack album read the title and thought that'll do, without reading the lyrics.
@davidjames579

. No Good About Goodbye is a strange one as the lyrics fit the film's story a lot better than Another Way To Die's.

In a publicity interview for TND (which is on KZbin) Pierce Brosnan talked about how he almost made an 'unofficial' Bond produced by Kevin McClory (yet again based on Thunderball), during the post LTK/pre GE time period. They had finance from Japan and were setting the thing up but legal issues stopped it from filming. I am slightly surprised EON were still happy to work with him after that.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
I was surprised to hear that too. I suppose Brosnan has a long term relationship with Eon [having first meet them on the set of FYEO] and given 'Goldeneye' had to be a hit to relaunch the series, getting the popular Brosnan possibly motived them to 'forget' about the incident [it had virtually no chance of being made as the later 'Warhead 2000' proved]. It's also interesting that Eon seemed cool with him talking about it while promoting there product but I'd love to hear more about it from Bronsnan and/or Eon. ['November Man' feels a bit like Brosnan's 'Never Say Never Again' in a fashion to me].
@davidjames579
@davidjames579 Жыл бұрын
. I guess they weren't bothered by it as you say another McClory Bond film would never happen, they had Brosnan so they'd beaten McClory there, and it shows how much Pierce wanted to be Bond.

Yeah i'll agree with you there. sorry to bring it up again, but i wonder if because Brosnan made 4 big movies with EON that when they let him go he kindly knew not to bash them or heavily critise them afterwards because of all the money and freind ship he made with them. And i think like you said the other week, Pierce may have gotten a pay out for not doing a 5th movie. I do wonder if this was SONY's desision and not Barbera and Michaels. know what i mean?@@jamesatkinsonja

@@DafyddBrooks Pierce is certainly very professional about the split and he gave Craig support which was good of him. I do wonder if the 'Jinx' project was viewed as a bit of a 'test of concept' for a Bond reboot given the premise was an origin story and more down to earth [given it would have been lower budget than DAD and reacting to DAD backlash and changing trends] and even though that wasn't made, why not do it for Bond himself? I certainly could see the studio pushing Eon in that direction [Pierce said Barbara B was very apologetic and upset in the 'departure' conversation] instead of trying to react to changing trends with one more Brosnan film before rebooting later [and paying him the rumoured $20 million for Bond 21, he was on $16.5 million for DAD while Craig was paid $3.2 million for Casino which was lower than Hallie Berry's $4 million for DAD]. MGM certainly seemed to be 'interfering' in the Brosnan films as they were apparently behind the American actors+ musicians in those films although didn't seem to be as big a factor in the Craig films or at least commented on, certainly compared to Craig's suggestions [Craig 'Can my friend Ana De Arms have a cameo? Eon Sure!].

I know the 'dodgy fax' story was also rumoured to be how Donkey Kong got his strange name - that it was meant to be Monkey Kong but the D turned into an M due to said dodgy fax. That one has been disproved - it was just a bad grasp of English on Miyamoto's part. But maybe, in an alternate timeline somewhere, Rareware made a Tomorrow Never Lies video game that connects to Monkey Kong 64 and Dream: Land of Giants via fully functional Stop 'n Swop technology.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
That reminds me of Black Box's 1989 hit 'Ride on Time' when the song's lyric is 'Right on Time' which occurred due to the Italian producers limited English.
@spencerkindra8822
@spencerkindra8822 Жыл бұрын
But does the fact that the title was taken from Tomorrow Never Knows disprove the "the ink in the fax machine ran" story? Because the producers could still have wanted to call the movie "Tomorrow Never Lies" originally because that title is already different from the song title. Then the ink ran and they said "You know what, Tomorrow Never Dies is a better title let's go with that instead."

The title 'Tomorrow Never Dies' was inspired by the Beatles song 'Tomorrow Never Knows', though, as anyone who's listened to the song without earmuffs will tell you, the title never appears in the song itself. Apparently the name was one of Ringo's nonsense phrases, just like with A Hard Day's Night. So if you're wondering why the title 'Tomorrow Never Dies' doesn't make any sense - it's because it was based on a different title that also doesn't make sense. It's just a long line of nonsense. But I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream; Lay down all thoughts SURRENDER! to the void.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
'listened to the song without earmuff's'...I see what you did there! Using a Beatles inspired title is a cute move given 60's nostalgia was a big factor in the 'cool Britannia' fad at the time and ties into the decade the series started. The title certainly operates on a 'cool' factor without really meaning anything!

TND was made when Teri Hatcher was still riding the Lois and Clark popularity wave. She was the "it" girl for a time. Jonathan Pryce strikes me as more of a Conrad Black/Robert Maxwell type. But the foreshadowing of Murdoch's move into the Chinese market was on point.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
As you say, Hatcher was a massive name in the USA at the time and MGM was trying to re-establish Bond in America so her casting made a lot of sense in 1997 as did getting Sheryl Crowe [who's was establish herself as a very popular artist in America] to do the title song. For my money, given Paris feels quite underwritten and isn't given much screen time, Hatcher did a good job.

TND(1997) has some very great stuff: Pre-title sequence, Bond & Q scene, Dr. Kaufman scene and of course: BMW 750iL car chase!!! *** Sadly, that last 3/3 is very boring/uninteresting! You know its extraordinary Calvin that 'Tomorrow never dies' has climbed up peoples list over the past few years because I was aware that a lot of people found it to be a fairly average movie back in the day. But now it seems to be very popular amongst people. Why is that do you think? Do you think people didn't realise what movie they had back in the day and potentially its a wake up call for EON on how to go about on the next movie?
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Жыл бұрын
I'm guessing because of Michelle Yeoh's higher profile and the 'media' angle feeling more relevant [because of increased awareness] in the social media age than it did at the time. TND tended to be a film generally regarded as 'fine' compared to the beloved Goldeneye and the divisive TWINE and DAD so it probably fell though the cracks a little [and it came out against 'Titanic']. Personally I feel the film is very '1997' in style and tone so probably not that useful for Eon regarding Bond 26 tbh but people are free to disagree. I would say that for the general public Brosnan is only 'Goldeneye' [maybe due to the N64 game too]. Goldeneye was the 4th highest grossing film in the 60th anniversary re-releases but his other 3 were in the bottom 6.

Your point in the original video about how you like Tomorrow Never Dies the same way you like Octopussy makes total sense because those movies share a lot of DNA. They're the most fun yet still quasi grounded movies of their respective actors. Then if you look at A View To A Kill and Die Another Day both movies are much more ridiculous.

Michelle Yeoh has spoken very fondly about TND and Eon in recent interviews [such as with GQ and People], but has said that she struggled to get established in Hollywood afterwards, mostly due to ignorant producers [she said some assumed she didn't speak English or got her nationality wrong] but also as she wanted to avoid typecasting. It does make me wonder if this made her reluctant to return to Wai Lin either in a spin off or in the proposed 'Die Another Day' cameo-officially she was 'unavailable' which is sometimes used as a polite way of turning something down. That might be me reading into the comment wrongly, but if true while I'd have loved to see a Wai Lin return, given her varied career and success over the last 20 years [including her Oscar win], credit to her for sticking to her guns.

I can see her coming back as another character like a Bond villian or a leader of the Chinese spy service or something perhaps. It could be good of EON to take on the oppurtunity to do so seeing as see is mega popular again

The smoking line at the start "filthy habit" has always bugged me. If Bond doesn't smoke because it's setting a bad example to the 1990s film going audience, just leave out the gag. I dunno, the guy didn't have to be smoking. He could have been repairing a plane or vehicle and Bond punches him.

Rapper Pras [from the Fugees] 1998 song 'Blue Angels' references TND ['Tomorrow Never Dies when she reveals her eyes, Keep your eyes on the prize...'] which might be the closest we ever get to a James Bond rap song! [nothing against rap but it doesn't really fit with the series].

In fairness she's an unknown in the UK [I only know who she is as Dutch Bond fan mentioned her in his review]. Similar to how Oliver Skeete's cameo in 'Die Another Day' wouldn't register for people outside the UK. A fun example-The people clamping the car in TWINE that Bond soaks were real life ''love to hate' car clampers from a UK reality TV show at the time so while UK audiences would find the gag even funner, international [and modern audiences as that show has faded into obscurity] probably assumed they were just extras.

The hairstyle, the sound...yeah, it is understandable that Calvin would yank his 'old reaction video' of this (and others) from his channel. The theme of this film is arguably more relevant now than back then (e.g. Zuckerberg, Musk, James Murdock, and other lesser known megalomanical media barons).
@jamesatkinsonja

It's always been a relevant theme in media+ politics [Citizen Kane was about the media in the 40's] and real life [Rupert Murdock bought his first UK newspaper in 1969] but certainly with social media were much more aware of it now.

The Connery-Brosnan series are implied to be the same continuity operating on 'comic book time'. Goldeneye was a 'soft reboot' in that the old continuity was implied to be still there but downplayed. In the next film TWINE, Bond is asked if he's lost someone close to him and he's implied to be thinking of Tracy. In contrast, Craig was a 'hard' reboot which ignored the earlier films.

@@jamesatkinsonja GoldenEye states that Brosnan had been JB in *1986* - thus establishing that his Bond is set in a separate reality/timeline.

@@bonghunezhou5051Looking into it, the Raymond Benson's novelisation actually mentions the degree discrepancy saying Bond was lying back in YOLT and doesn't actually have the degree. Technically all the first 20 films happen to the same Bond [and the other characters re-cast like Felix and Moneypenny], but not in a linear timeline [so Goldeneye's pre-title sequence is technically set between 'View to a kill' and 'Living Daylights']. The writers of TWINE confirmed Brosnan's Bond was married to Tracy ['In Electra he thinks he's found Tracy, but he's actually found Blofeld'] and you have Brosnan interacting with Connery era gadgets as if he used them in 'Die Another Day'. It's a game but 'Everything or Nothing' also has Brosnan's Bond refer to 'View to a Kill' and tackle Jaws again. But despite all that the continuity of the first 20 Bond's was fairly loose and 'Goldeneye' was certainly a 'soft' reboot so if you want to see Brosnan as a separate timeline that's perfectly fine.

The Q branch scene in Die Another Day where Bond is looking at gadgets from the earlier movies confirms that Brosnan is in fact playing the same Bond that Connery first played in Dr. No.

@@spencerkindra8822 It is totally alright if _you_ wish to consider Pierce's films as part of the continuity that started with Sean's (timeline takes precedence over background props, IMHO).
