I used to try to talk people out of getting fish bowls and those little “fish tanks” for bettas when I’d go to the pet store (I only don’t now because I don’t go to the pet store much anymore). One woman kept arguing with me about and insisted that “in the wild bettas can live a puddle the size of a heel print.” I got frustrated and said “yeah, well as long as someone brings me food, I can live in a coffin. That’s what that fish tank is. A betta-sized coffin.”
@joyjansen75513 жыл бұрын
For all the (future) hamster owners. You can also look around at secondhand stores (or online etc.) for a big aquarium that is (for example) leaking. Those are usually pretty cheap since they can't really be used for fish anymore. They work like the IKEA detolf. You can put in so much more bedding for digging around and making tunnels. In the Netherlands we call it hamsterscaping. It basically means creating a ''natural'' enviroment with (dried) plants, wooden elemenets, lots of (different) bedding etc. It looks amazing in your home and is great for hamsters!

I was actually taught differently. This is what I was taught. Most fabrics are not encountered in the wild, the way they're created can fray at a level our eyes can't see and cause issues just like unvacuumed carpet. The fibers also hold fecal matter and chemicals used in cleaning. Many fabrics at the basking temps and exposure can allegedly also fire off toxic fumes longterm. The dyes can be toxic. Not to mention the fact dragons claws can catch, or loose threads can be mistaken for food and lead to issues too.

I have 5 piggies in the herd now, and using the panels makes it so easy to adjust the size of the pen if I need to.

I'm only on the Betta Fish section and as someone working in the aquatics industry, I really do not recommend housing a Male Betta with a Female as suggested by your wording. Females can be kept in sorority groups, but some Females do need to be kept singularly. Males should always be kept singularly except in the case of observed situations for breeding. Females can and will attack Males and Males can and will attack Females. Some people may have success with keeping Males with Females, but typically this is in significantly larger aquaria and I would not recommend it as there's a high risk of harm, which for me is questionable ethically.

a really inexpensive solution to the space issue for hamsters and other rodents is making bin cages! you can get one of those huge bin cages, cut out the tops and some side windows, put in some wire mesh et voila! it works fantastic, and costs hundreds less than glass aquariums or other expensive items. all the needed supplies can be found at hardware stores and walmart. (a lot of people struggle with cutting out the windows in plastic, but i'll say i have succeeded in doing it well with a 5$ box cutter from home depot. it can be done! and some metal sheet cutters are also really handy. those cost me like 10$.)

I had to tie 2 huge bird cages together for my chinchillas because not a single store or webshop could deliver the heavy metal cages with the big doors. I made shelves, put in hammocks and wooden bridges, houses, etc. I switch it up twice a week and they love it. They don't like their running weel, they'd roll off the top, but never tried getting in it. I do plan on making a custom enclosure that's easier to clean. I pretty much have to take apart everything to reach the bottom now. It works, but birdcage doors are way too small. They like to use me as a bridge while i'm struggling to clean, so that's fun😂

Do you think a large glass reptile enclosure would be good for a Hedghog? My lil man has gotten big recently and is due for an upgrade. We have an enclosure left over from a Bearded Dragon we rehomed to a friend who has multiple of them and already had one she was going to use for Toothless. Would that be good for a Hedgie? I know he likes the dark so he has his own little shaded alcove of the house that his enclosure is in and has a wonderful running wheel(not those metal barred ones, one of the good ones) that would fit in their as well. I'm worried that because it is a big upgrade it might stress him out to have so much space so suddenly. He, like most hedgies, is pretty shy and can be easy to stress so I don't want him getting stressy about new enclosures.
