Actually, it's worse. The reason why people like Morrowind and Oblivion so much compared to Skyrim is that they simplified the fuck out of most systems. Morrowind, while looking super outdated, was a huge game. Much bigger than whatever Skyrim could ever be, but it's biggest strength was all of it's mechanics and character systems, that they simply cut out for streamlined gameplay. It's the reason why all modern Bethesda games feel the same. You shouldn't have the same melee combat in both Fallout and Skyrim, and probably even Starfield if it's gonna have melee weapons, but here we are.

I know the broader gaming audience doesn't seem to care that much about it, but Valve has actually been significantly investing in modern gaming not being proprietorially tied to Xbox/Windows/Microsoft over the past 5-10 years - between the (admittedly niche and unsuccessful) steam Link, actually having developers on payroll contributing to Proton (a compatibility layer allowing games made for windows to be run on Linux _as-is_), and now the steam Deck - not to mention everything they've done around VR, culminating in Half-Life: Alyx & the Index. They're definitely not a games maker anymore, and they certainly seem content to farm their storefront/marketplace for "passive" income (though here as well, the explosion of games present on steam has meant increasing infrastructure costs and challenges for them, so it hasn't purely been a "passive" endeavor, just a low-risk one). They seem to be interested in presenting their actions as trying to take on the role of "custodian of gaming[ for gamers]" in opposition to the current domination of the industry by do-what-worked-for-others, quarterly-profit-seeking actors (a good example being all the criticisms Vaush has of the upcoming Diablo IV in this video). Obviously it's not all sunshine & daisies in reality, but they certainly don't seem to be as lazy as the other big names, just not nearly as focused on creating new games themselves. It's still debatable how effective they will end up being at this, and such a position is also clearly a possible marketing/PR tactic given today's context. Credit where credit is due, though, they're walking the walk much more than others in the space.

Bethesdas writing isn't even that bad. It's mostly their main story lines that arel lackluster. And ther more than one good reason for that. Mainly that the story is supposed to be a sort of "tour guide" to introduce you to the different parts of the world, characters and factions. Another reason why it is difficult to write engaging storys for sandbox games is ludonarrative-dissonance, Especially when it comes to urgency which should be avoided for the most part because you dont want to pressure the player to rush through the main quest while ignoring the "star" of the game (the world) There are a lot more reasons thst i am to tired to list now

You're all subs, and Fromsoft is your dom.
@@mikayelhakobyan1653 that is true in some of the aspects but for others ehh, it didn't age well at all. Like I could think of many things in regard to the flaws of Fromsoft titles like to name a few, static camera FOV (really bad especially for huge bosses), the inconsiderate crosshair for bows/crossbows, unbalanced PVP (why even bother including it lmao), unclear and outdated questline approach, mostly lame craftable items, BOSSES ARE TOO DAMN FAST AND OP and others I could think of. Still, at least the gameplay loop in Fromsoft games is more satisfying but that also can pose to be another problem, especially in Elden Ring. You see, there is really not much outside of combat, the puzzles are mundane and simple when being compared to Breath of the Wild for example. Like they could have included other forms of activities as well rather than put the sole focus of their games toward combat which is not inherently wrong but that should not be the only thing available for the players.
@BackwardsPancake2 жыл бұрын
@@MatPost I think it's a matter of "core systems", above all. The fact that Fromsoft's combat design is much more interesting than Bethesda's might just be "one aspect", but it is extremely meaningful, because combat is very much the central thing you do in both games, and it's sort of really important to get it right. All the other systems can be interesting distractions, but they aren't as central and woven into everything like the combat is, and therefore don't have the same presence and staying power. Think of it like this: You know that joke about how every Skyrim build eventually turns into a stealth archer? It's because that's the only time in the game where the weapons feel appropriately lethal, impactful and satisfying to use. What does it say about a combat system when the most fun way to engage with it is to bypass it completely? I would certainly argue that any game that makes you want to avoid it's core gameplay loop is a shit game. To phrase it another way: I can pick up any Fromsoft game and feel safe knowing that just fighting basic enemies will feel fun. Some parts of those games are shit, but the main thing I'm doing is consistently engaging and satisfying. Alternatively, I can pick up any Bethesda game and feel dread knowing that I'll have to spend several more hours modding the game to make the combat actually weighty and interesting, and even then all I've done will feel like a janky band-aid fix, because there's only so much you can do by polishing a turd.

You make friends with a black hole. 5% chance of this event being possible to find each game you play (I got lucky once). What was will be, what will be was: Spoilers. And I skipped a lot of the events. You can see the whole thing on the wiki page. Search: Horizon Signal Stellaris. "An alert communications officer has identified what appears to be a faint signal, almost lost in the gamma-ray flashes from the black hole here - faint, but unmistakably artificial. This raises intriguing possibilities for our scientists." "Science Officer [scientist name] reports that the signal was unexpectedly easy to decipher... but the team has spent considerable time confirming that it was not a hoax. It is a repeating, half-coherent message in the [empire adjective] language - something like a poem. It repeats the phrases GRAVITY IS DESIRE and TIME IS SIGHT. It encodes co-ordinates near the black hole. And it ends with a dedication by name to the Science Officer - who adds dispassionately that they have confirmed that the signal has been radiating into interstellar space before their birth. In fact, the signal may predate our civilization." ... "The [science ship name] has located a small, minimally powered artificial object, broadcasting a looping signal at local range only. These sorts of things usually turn out to be escape pods, and this looks like one of those. It's been out here a long time. When the crew cracks it open - carefully observing quarantine procedures - they find ancient remains, preserved by the sterile pod environment. So far, not unusual. The captain of the [science ship name] indicates, however, that they did not expect to find the [empire adjective] words WHAT WAS, WILL BE; WHAT WILL BE, WAS daubed on the wall in the bodily fluids of the pod's occupant - who the crew are now wryly referring to as the Messenger. They add that there are some equally unexpected anatomical similarities between the Messenger's species, and our own." "[Society research leading scientist name] has reconstructed the Messenger species. It's feebler than ours, but has significantly improved cognitive abilities. There is some confusion about whether we were the source species, and the Messenger the modified version, or whether the Messenger was our ancestor. It is a little embarrassing to imagine that we might be descended from such an effete species - but [Society research leading scientist name] is firmly of that opinion. Indeed, they consider the loss of cognitive abilities a "tragedy.". Such a tragedy that they have undergone a retroviral treatment to alter their own physiology to that of the Messengers. They insist that this will equip them much better to continue the project." "[Society research leading scientist name] has now recreated the genetic heritage of the Messenger species. Without stopping to ask anyone's opinion, they have also created highly contagious retroviral agent. It stalks our worlds. Under its influence, our primary species falls into a chrysalis-coma and emerges a day later as the Messenger species. This is causing, it is fair to say, some excitement." ... "There is a consciousness outside time and beneath space. It is a labyrinthine tangle of desire and desperation. Our remote ancestors knew it as the Loop, the Worm-in-Waiting. We have met it out there, where the void is tormented by gravity. It seems to have taken a personal interest in us. There are mathematical proofs that it loves us, but love to the Worm is not like love to anything that subsists in ordinary space. With all we have learned, we think that we might be able to use the Omega Alignment to open an access route - an Entry Point - for the Worm to manifest in our home system. (The Worm is fond of beginnings, and this is ours.) What consequences would that have? We have yet to find anyone who's prepared to commit to an answer. Immortality, perhaps, or apocalypse. But we would certainly learn a great deal." "The Project is complete. The accelerators are online. The power network of a dozen cities is diverted to wake the pseudo-singularity at the heart of the Alignment. Space shudders like wind-wracked cloth. [star name], for a heart-stopping moment, dims, and then brightens. A shadow coils in its heart. The Worm is here. It unfolds like origami. Across the system, sensors shut down in abject disbelief as the incomprehensible data of its arrival sleets through them. On the homeworld, our subjects scream and cower as they feel its attention turned up on them, and upon us. It presents a wordless question - or rather, we have become aware that this question was always what it was asking us, every time we encountered it." "The Worm loves us. It will always love us, and thus it always has. It winds around the hot heart of our home star. It winds around every infinitesimal loop of genetic information. It provokes a shuddering series of cataclysms in the planetary crust of our home, but when our star grows cold, that cataclysm will warm us. We understand so much more. We will always be what we were going to be, wound tight in the love of the Worm."

I prefer it if there are cosmetics that you have to buy over cosmetics that you can buy but can also grind. If you have to buy them, then everyone knows they're bought, and thus less prestigious by default. Their only value is in their appearance which might be enough on its own. But if you can buy gear that can also be worked for regularly, then that detracts the value of that gear. You'll work hard for something that has zero prestige. Nobody will think it's impressive because everyone will suspect that you bought it rather than worked for it. The work wont be worth it. It's objectively better for cosmetics to be store only than having the ability to either grind or buy something.
