The Elvenjig is like jazz intro turning to a folk song. This band doesn't even cancel a show when their singer is gone for good. I'm hinting at the day that Anette was hospitalized just hours before the beginning of their show in Denver 2012, when the crowd was already entering the area. What followed was something I have never seen or heard of before, at least not with a professional band that is pretty much above any other band of their genre: something that was on the one hand the most iconic karaoke show ever, on the other hand appeared stressfull and desperate. And the people there had experienced the probably most unique Nightwish concert ever, and I bet my ass it will never be repeated. On youtube it is known as 'Nightwish - The Denver Debacle (2012). For those who are interested, it's a mix of their 'behind the scenes' of this concert (which is part of a DVD) and some fan made live videos. Here the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHmWZKWErphmn7c

That was the most awkwardly amazing show I ever watched - the fact that they had the guts to attempt something like that (Nightwish on one hand and Elize and Alissa on the other hand) is really a testament to their dedication to the audience and their showmanship. In one sense, this was the truest form of a live performance you could ever get - they were giving each other nudges and queues, adding a bar here and removing one there to adjust to what the singer was doing. Elize really did her best and her improv was cool (especially with the tap-dancing on the intro to Over the Hills). Against all odds, they never disappoint. Hats off to the NW gang, all the best to Marco and I hope I get to see them again live soon :)

Originally I heard the name Elvenpath and thought to myself, "Isnt that song VERY early Nightwish?" Turns out it's the first song from their first studio album. Seems about as early Nightwish as we're likely to get. Also, PLEASE YES on Master Passion Greed. That is probably my favorite piece featuring Marco's singing (close second to Dead to the World). I don't believe there's a live version, but there's a lot to unpack musically. Also it's another song born from the Poet and the Pendulum saga that we've explored a little bit on this channel.

And this is what Floor is 'only' capable of reaching when she's sick. To an amateur like me there's no flaws there. Just seems a bit strained, as if not having as fun as usually. But that could also be just the story being kinda wistful, there's the seriousness of longing, or it could just be the lights bothering her eyes. Kudis for those who notice something in her voice - I only see something stiff in the body language, a bit, when now on the 2nd time concentrating on it - having heard she was struggling.

Even when Floor can only perform at 75% because she is ill and relatively low on energy, she is still singing everybody out of the park. People may not realize how much power and energy she normally puts in every song when she is blasting at 100%. A deep bow to her. To my opinion, when she is 100% healthy she dances a bit more and plays a bit more in lots of different movements and theatrical expressions to the crowd, that's the only detail i could notice. I think because she was a bit ill here, she very consciously put all the energy she had left into the singing, so the audience would not notice a loss of vocal quality in the total performance. These people are extreme professionals. Nice analysis Chase, as usual. Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much, Chase, for reacting to Elvenpath as that was probably the first song I heard from Nightwish. It might also have been Deep Silent Complete, but I am not sure about it (many years ago). But I remember that I found that additional spoken word part in the beginning to be a really nice touch. There are two other things which I would like to mention here. 1) Epica released an acoustic version for Abyss of Time - search for: EPICA - Abyss O'Time (OFFICIAL ACOUSTIC VIDEO) - and they used an accordion within it. I think there is no need to react to it, but it is really sweet. 2) What would be really great, if you could react to it, is a new project featuring Marcela Bovio. Marcela was a backing vocalist for Floor Jansen on the second album of Floor´s previous band ReVamp and for Anneke van Giersbergen in Gentle Storm (a project by Arjen Lucassen). She is also a backing vocalist for Arjen Lucassen´s Ayreon. And for Simone Simons in Epica. She was the lead vocalist in another Arjen Lucassen´s band called Stream of Passion. She is also one of the "lead" vocalists in MaYaN. This project is called Dark Horse White Horse and Marcela started it with guitarist Jord Otto and keyboardist Ruben Wijga, who were both members of ReVamp. Ruben is now in a band called Blackbriar. Jord was in Anneke van Giersbergen´s band Vuur for a while and is a first cousin to Charlotte Wessels from Delain. The guest drummer for the upcoming EP is Arien from Epica and the guest bassist is Siebe Sol. It is produced by good old Joost van der Broek. They released two singles: "Dark Horse White Horse - Black hole" and "Dark Horse White Horse - Judgement Day (lyric video)" which are together only 8 minutes long. Please, consider it. :-)

Elvenpath was the first Power Metal song composed by Toumas, complete with fast double-bass drumming in the chorus, fantasy-themed lyrics and everything. This song first appeared on the standard edition (the first and previous edition being a 500 ex limited pressing) of their debut album Angels Fall First. They had no formulas at that time, just wildly trying shit out to see what sticks. The first edition was more of a demo, and for the standard edition, two songs were removed and replaced with three new songs: Elvenpath, Beauty And the Beast, and Tutankhamen. The lyrics of the song takes a lot of elements from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and the spoken words are taken from the Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated The Lord of the Rings, which of course at the time of the album was the only movie adaptation of the triology.

Hello Chase, first of all: What a wonderful reaction to this breathtaking presentation of the best band on earth, Nightwish. There is a lot to tell how I felt and what thoughts ran through my mind while watching. Like you I never mind criticism on Nightwish music because it is always the greatest pleasure for me to spend this worthy time of my life listening to the beauty of their music. The performance's beginning was awesome, developping from soft play to one of the strongest presentations I have ever seen. Kai on the drums, Marko and Empuu with their guitarplay, Tuomas' fingers mastering the keyboard, Troy playing flute and the uillean pipes. When Floor added her vocals, the musical race was completely on the run. Gorgeous!!! While watching I often had goose bumps and felt happiness, fascination and adorement. I smiled a lot and my whole body moved in unison with sound and rhythm. By the way I'm a woman of 65 years and one of the biggest Nightwish fans on earth because of their unique compositions and their playing TOGETHER, that means their supporting one another that often makes me breathless. Despite her health problem Floor delivered a perfect presentation. My deep respect. Additionally, your comments are of high qualitaty and I love them most. I'm always looking forward to your next reaction. Thumbs up and thank you so much. ;)

Elvenpath the first song from their first album 😍

Great to see you again Chase. Elvenjig is just a jam that was worked up as an introduction to "Elvenpath". Elvenpath was the first song from 1996 on the first Nightwish album "Angels Fall First". It is a very fantasy type of song. This song is so old that Tuomas has not established his song structured writing style yet. During this era of Nightwish they were considered more of a power metal band. Loved your analysis again Chase. Merry Christmas to you my friend. "Have a damn good day" including the holidays. Peace. Now for some unashamed promotion for my favorite band. See below. Everyone should head to the Nightwish website nightwish.com/ There will be a Virtual concert at the virtually created space called “The Islander Arms” on 12th & 13th of March 2021. This will be the first time to hear music from Human:II:Nature. Get your tickets for this show soon. Very reasonably priced. A single ticket will give you access to both shows and allow you to watch the shows for 48 hours afterward. Each show will have a different set list, so it is a great deal and the only way to see the first new concert from Nightwish. I have mine already and am excited to experience the show in my own home on my big screen. Don’t miss it!

Missed the premiere, but I have to say I loved this reaction as well! I hope you take your time to listen to a version where she is at full capacity, so you notice how "safe" she sings it here. That being said, Floor singing "safe" is still fantastic :P

As a kid I loved the early lord of the rings movies. Imagine me listening to that very Song for the 1st time some years ago (with Tarja as vocalist) and finding that they have used audio from it... it is so well thought of and fitting. Elvenpath live for me is a special song, because I assume it to be a very hard one to perform live, letting alone, if the artist doesn't feel good that night.. Therefor I am really happy that you, once more, came to the same conclusion like I have, after severely testing Floor on that very Song on various occasions, she allways nailed it and so did the guys. I have to admit, that I tend to underestimate instrumentals during life shows. Way too often this would be the time, where I usually do a very fast sprint to the loo of given location and try to be back for when the next 'real' song starts. GOSH, I've been missing out! I won't do that anymore, but instead will controll my intakte of liquids much better during concerts! Thank you for putting me back on track for the beauty, importance and musicially craftsmanship in regards of these small, but important pieces 🥰

Please Chase, react to While Love Died by NORTHWARD. It's a side project that Floor did with Norwegian guitarist Jørn Viggo Lofstad. More hard rock than Nightwish, I think you'll like! They made a music video for the song :)

Nice reaction and analysis of what the music is doing. I have just watched Julia reacting to Yours Is An Empty Hope which stunned her! I aso mentioned to her that Nightwish announced the other day that they will be doing two virtual shows online on 12th and 13th March 2021, where they will be performing songs from Human :II: Nature among other songs. Both dates will have different setlists and tickets are available from their website. I've already booked mine for both dates (along with the T-Shirt offer)! Stay safe!

Chase you need to look into the "Denver Debacle" when Elize Ryd & Alissa White and the sold out crowd cover for a sick Annette with no notice, no rehearsals, and No safety Net!
