The smell of old or new rubber dominating the room is a little nauseating. The point of going home from your shop is to get away from that after the 10 hour work day. Do you know ONE guy - or gal - that doesn't shower to get that smell off after a long day?

As a person who works with resin theres so much about this trend i hate. Epoxy resin isnt food safe. Yeah that stuff you get at home depo? Not food safe surface even when its cured. Second epoxy resin YELLOWS. even the highest end most expensive "uv resistant" stuff yellows and it yellows even faster and nore severly in a bright area that gets sun. You know, like a kitchen! Epoxy resin scratches. Once again you can get harder formulas but against a slipped kitchen knife you got yourself a cool knew perma scratch unless you want to redo the whole top. And finally, uncured resin is toxic and dangerous. Resin fumes are bad for your lungs, touching ut can cause you to aquire permanent allergies to it and it puts oit ALOT of heat when it cures depending on the variety. Im talking it can give you burns if it drips on bare skin while its curing. Guys, please. Stop futzing around with resin! First we got MGA putting UV resin in kids toys with no warning and now this 😭

Just as there is different paints there are different epoxies. I use a VOC free epoxy that is food safe when cured. I'm aware of the ambering and don't use colorants that will make it yellow. It's scratch resistant and you can put a pot on it straight from the stove. I use my counters a lot and have had no problems. I didn't go over an existing counter, I built them and my shower walls. I treated them like artworks, not a mimic of stone. It works with the house. The key is to get the right epoxy for the job, and in this case it is a lot more expensive to get the right product.
@strayiggytv
@strayiggytv 3 ай бұрын
@@debraskeen7877 I feel like your missing the point I'm making entirely. Do you really think the average DiY tiktoker is doing all that? Is it more likely the person who saw someone post a picture of their finished countertops on Pinterest did any of the research you did or did they more likely go to Walmart and buy the cheapest self leveling table epoxy they make and go to town 😂 I find enough people's half finished and terribly done furniture flipping projects at goodwill to know that the answer is no, no they did not. TREND does not imply long lasting well thought out project lol. Also just a side note but treating your countertops as art sounds like a lot of work when you could treat your countertops as countertops and hang art on your walls 🤷‍♀️ Edit: also ambering (which is a very kind way to say yellowing) will happen regardless of colorants. As far as I'm aware they have yet to create an epoxy that will not yellow be it UV or two part. You can buy it that will resist yellowing and you can add colorants that will create the illusion of it staying clearer but it will yellow over time.

@gabrielaribeiro6155

Yup, I work in art conservation and even HXTAL epoxy resin, which is one of the best on the market and supposedly non-yellowing, does yellow over time - from what colleagues have said, it takes 3-7 years for the colour-change to be noticeable, depending on the amount of exposure to sunlight. That's a really short time span, specially considering how hard the removal of epoxy resin can be, in case you want to replace it with something else.

I feel like it's really common here that sellers try to do a quick fix-up before showing the apartment, like just do a layer of white over everything. Mine had stains everywhere and they hadn't bothered to cover any adjacent areas at all when painting... They got annoyed when I gave them a low bid and were like "we just renovated" and I replied "yeah just look at that paint job". Luckily I have been painting professionally for years so I fixed it pretty easily.

Ok, as a person who does home remodeling.... I've worked a lot with epoxy resins- I've done full seals on in-shower wood elements, wood furniture, sealed butcher block, etc. What I can promise is that that nice glossy finish is going to be ruined the first time you wipe anything across it. Many of them will be ruined if the sun hits it and you haven't used the right resin. Just don't. The wheel side table... that's a $200 tire on at least a $100 rim. That's *at least* $300 to just buy a goddamned end table. The painted concrete porch- go for it, paint your porch (make sure you use concrete paint). But for the love of all things holy, don't use caulk to fix concrete cracks. They will come back. The caulk will not hold to the concrete, and it will create an area that holds water to further degrade the concrete. Use self leveling compound or cement to fix cracks in concrete. Please, stop painting tile. Replacing tile is not hard or expensive. Porcelain tile is *intentionally* non-porous- meaning paint will not adhere to it. It will chip and scuff the first time you walk on it, and your also creating a surface that collects dirt and mold.

We painted our bathroom wall tile about 5 years ago and it's still holding up amazingly (the tile was in great condition but a hideous color) - we scrubbed the grout, sanded the tile, applied a tile-specific base coat, and used a spray applicator and durable enamel paint. My countertops are from the “landlord special”- just ugly greyish-blue laminate in the kitchen and bathrooms. My solution was to choose paint colors for the house that compliment the ugly counters. And it worked out great, and in fact most people that come to see the house think we renovated the whole kitchen lol. It looks like it’s meant to be there now, and it cost way less! And it’s pretty easy to choose a color scheme. Just go to Home Depot with a swatch, and go through the color pamphlets, and find the one that matches closest to what you have. And go from there! :)

Thank you for advising people to find a way to work with their countertops. Mine are 2005 quartz, completely functional and not offensive but not what I would have chosen. I don’t like the idea of changing out something so expensive just because it wasn’t what I picked. And it is just soooo wasteful to replace something that could last as long as the house. About 5 years after I moved in, I realized that if I changed the colour stain of the cabinets then the countertops would make sense with my general vibe. As soon as I figure out what I need to do with the backsplash (glass tile installed the wrong way) I’ll set aside the time and start stripping cabinets (family has expertise and I’ll have their help). Overall kitchen redo will take way more time than if I gutted it, but will come in way way lower cost and won’t be wasteful.

I have 50 year old Formica counter tops that are soooo out of date. Same with the original dark oak cabinets. I've been researching the proper way to paint the cabinets, and may be working up the courage to tackle that project. But I have rejected the temptation to DIY the counter tops and will just have to pick the right lottery ticket to afford a professional replacement before I make the mistake of painting them.

Yeah, it's the same with the fake wood varnish on IKEA or other furniture stores' new furniture lines. Like. either use wood furnishing or use straight paint colours, but for the sake of everything that is good in this world, stop trying to fake wood, it's not going to look like wood. Already because of the plastic-y feel of it, it is ALWAYS obvious that it's not real wood.

The right paint for the right thing has really been an important learning experience for me this last year. I painted my bedroom and am finishing up a DIY update in my bathroom. I was so frustrated when I found the doors scuffing so easily, but then I found out there is paint specifically for doors, cabinets, and trim. Game changer! I don’t know what makes it different but it holds up amazingly.

Child me would’ve been in hospital so fast 🤣 A childhood friend actually had the with handrails version directly over another staircase at their house and the first thing I thought of and then did when the adults weren’t looking was wriggle through the gap and climb them from underneath like a monkey 💀 I was caught trying to make a swing before I got to test it and was permanently banned from the stairs 😭

I second the paint issue! The place I’m renting has paint over wood floors and it’s constantly chipping wherever there’s furniture. Plus the floors never feel fully clean because there’s so much foot traffic and dirt which paint holds on to. I vacuum and mop every single day because I have pets and kids to no avail. Hate these painted floors especially when the wood beneath it is so beautiful. Do not recommend.

When I was an army spouse over 25 years ago, it was common for those of us living in military housing to do some DIY with contact paper. While living in Germany, in a apartment that had been built just after WWII, I covered the cracked and dirty bathroom floor tile with Contact paper that looked like marble At least it was clean, and when we moved out, all I had to do was pull it up, and there was no adhesive on the floor. We also used to "wallpaper" our walls with fabric, soaked in liquid starch. Usually just an accent wall. It looked quite nice and left no residue on the wall when we had to pull it down. And the fabric was inevitably used in our next home, if not on the walls, then to make curtains. We moved 16 times in the 20 years we spent in the military, and not once did the curtains from one home fit the windows in the new home.

The not using the big light thing is so funny to me cause SO many houses were built with no living room overhead light. My 1898 home doesn't have one and my 1986 home doesn't have one either. They were literally designed to only use lamps in that room. Then all of a sudden in the 90s? I'm assuming? they started adding light fixtures in there and now no one wants them.

"Paint made for concrete"... We bought a house with a painted porch. It had been painted with "paint for concrete" just before it went on the market, looked terrific. By the next summer, we were scraping/sand-blasting the areas which didn't even make it past one year (lifting, flaking, bubbling). Trouble was, it DID adhere (tremendously, effectively) in SOME areas and then NOT AT ALL in others. We had it professionally redone. Still was a VERY BAD idea--flaky spots, lifting within one year (again). FYSA, this was in Colorado, climate which includes freezing temps, snow, yada yada. I loved the look, but I won't ever paint concrete. Let me again emphasize that this was expensive paint sold for use on exterior concrete (used IN TANDEM with every expert-advice re: proper preparation prior to application. THANK YOU for all your work, Nick.

For the never use the big light thing, it makes sense to be really popular. Historically, incandescent bulbs and gas fixtures just weren't bright enough to light a room properly, so many lamps and windows were used. This also gives those desired dynamics that look so pleasing. I know this first hand because I live in a historical recreation home and we use edison style incandescents to light open bulb fixtures. Lamps are a necessity because the main lights are too dim alone. The introduction of the LED meant that a ton of people no longer needed those lamps to have a bright enough room, so people kinda stopped using them for a bit. Those dynamics are harsh though, and we as a society tired of the harsh utilitarian lighting and are now kind of overdoing the warm lamp thing. I agree though, I love the direction we are going but there is a difference between cute lamp only warm lighting and dingy dark bat cave.
