Jeff Bridges, the dude, has been around since the 70s, and is in a lot of stuff, and him and Kurt Russell did have kind of a similar look back in the day. His brother Beau Bridges is also an actor, as was their father Loyd Bridges who you've seen in "Airplane". He was the guy in charge at the airport with the white hair who picked a hell of a time to quit whatever.

Jeff Bridges comes from a acting family. The Bridges family is very well known in Hollywood. His grand father and all his brothers were all actors. @MarcosElMalo2
@MarcosElMalo2 Жыл бұрын
No one seem seems willing to follow the plot. Side characters appear and disappear, everyone has their own agenda. The plot is a frustrating exercise in trying to unravel the plot until we give up and say, “Fuck it, let’s go bowling.” It’s funny how both Lebowskis want to use the Dude for different ends, but for similar reasons: he’s a bum and a loser. The Big Lebowski wants him as a fall guy, Maude wants to be impregnated by someone easily dissuaded from taking responsibility.

My favorite Coen Brothers movie is O Brother Where Art Thou. It's a great movie with a great soundtrack. It's probably one of their biggest commercial successes. It stars George Clooney, and John Goodman appears in it. I also liked their underrated movie, The Ladykillers, starring Tom Hanks. It's a remake of a 1955 Alec Guinness/Peter Sellers movie. Sam Elliot plays Virgil Earp in the great western film, Tombstone, but he's had a long career with a long list of films and tv shows. He's probably just as well known for his mustache and deep voice as for his acting.

Hi Dawn, Great reaction - as always. Here's the deal... •••• ••Bunny left to go away to visit friends without telling anyone. ••The German Nihilists learned of it somehow, and used the occasion of her disappearance to pretend that they kidnapped her and to try and extract a million dollars’ ransom from the Lebowski who lived in the mansion. ••That Lebowski, her husband, didn’t really want her back. He has no money of his own, so he used the circumstance of what he thought was her kidnapping, to steal the money from the charity trust, for himself. The Charity trust overseers, including Maude, would think that the money went to get Bunny back. But, the money would be used for himself. There was no money in the briefcase that wheelchair Lebowski gave the Dude, to begin with. ••Bunny owed money to Treehorn, so Treehorn was motivated collect that debt, so he had the Dude visit him, because he thought the Dude could lead him to it. He had the Dude drugged so that Treehorn could have his thugs search the Dude’s apartment. •••• There’s a lot of things you EXPECT to happen in the movie, but don’t (nihilism)… •Bunny was never kidnapped. •No one had their toe cut off against their will. •Donny wears many bowling shirts, but always with OTHER PEOPLES’ names on them - never his own name. •The Dude is never actually seen bowling, not once. •NO MONEY is ever exchanged between any two parties (Maybe with the exception of the check for 69 cents, that the Dude writes to the Supermarket.) •The Wheelchair Lebowski, doesn’t actually have any money. He disburses it on behalf of the real owners. •Since Wheelchair Lebowski doesn’t actually have his own money, HE is not actually the generous philanthropist he presents himself as. •Vietnam never relates to anything we see in the movie, even though Walter constantly talks about it. • ‘Shomer Shabbos’ translates to ‘observing the Sabbath.’ It means observing the Mitzvot (Commandments) associated with Judaism’s Shabbat. Walter views himself as taking the observance of the Shabbat restrictions seriously, but he actually doesn’t - in two different ways: - The overriding idea behind the Commandments, is that the person makes G-d, and observing G-d’s ways, into the center of the person’s life. (You’re allowed to break the restrictions of the Sabbath, but only in a true emergency that is likely to involve life-or-death.) When The Dude threatens Walter, “Come pick me up, or I’m off the bowling team,” that is not a life-or-death emergency. That Walter comes to pick up the Dude, moves the plot of the movie along, but it also demonstrates that Walter has made bowling and the tournament into the center of his life, not Judaism and not obeying G-d’s Commandments. If it were otherwise, Walter would have said, “My life will be more difficult if you’re not in it, and it will be a major blow to not compete in the tournament, but I don’t break the Sabbath for something that’s not a life-or-death emergency.” - Observing the Commandments is supposed to help produce a person who can control himself, and who embodies ‘Loving-Kindness.’ (Also, you can’t be happy, if you don’t have self-control). Walter is the exact opposite of such a person: He’s continuously out-of-control, filled with anger, and is almost always one inch away from losing it: screaming, shooting someone, or beating people up. He waves the ‘I observe the Shabbat’ thing in peoples’ faces, as part of his identity, while being the opposite of who G-d wants a person to be (the G-d he is supposedly doing these things for; he is an angry, out-of-control piece of work), and giving a bad name to religious Jews and Judaism: He’s the only way-out-of-control person you see in the film, and he’s also the only person we see, who makes a big deal of being ‘Shomer Shabbos’ . It wouldn’t be unreasonable for an ignorant person to associate the two things. (“If this is what the religion is all about, I’m staying the f__k away from it and all people connected with it.”) (I understand that 'Walter' is based on a real person, and the above may not have been what the Cohen Brothers intended (they wanted to create memorable characters and funny situations with layers, which they obviously did.) I'm merely noting it.)

The long pinky fingernail is a drug reference. The idea is you grow your pinky fingernail long for dipping drugs out of a baggy, like cocaine or heroin. Famously there is a picture of Carrie Fisher in _Star Wars_ that shows her with an obviously long pinky fingernail. When it was pointed out to her she was confused. She admitted to being a _total_ drug addict at the time, but didn't use her pinky fingernail for that. (Carrie Fisher fought drug and alcohol addiction for much of her life.)

So, the way you get your bowling ball to curve: There's a polish that you apply to your ball to keep them shiny and capable of moving very fast down the oiled lanes that keep the pins at the end of them. When you stand with the ball, your arm is kind of at a 45 degree angle and your palm is flat up holding the ball. On the approach you swing the arm back and forth in a pendulum motion for moment. Each lane has sets of arrows on them. You aim for those usually and not the pins. If you release the ball with a straight release, it should head pretty straight, sometimes with a slight curve. You want to hit the pins not quite dead on, aim at clipping the first pin but hitting the second row of pins. When you want the ball to curve, you have to aim a bit differently, but you rotate your hand when you release the ball instead of pushing it straight on. When you rotate your hand, the ball will have spin to it and if you can do it right the wax+oil+spin will get your ball to do nice and beautiful arcs.

This movie is kind of an homage in some ways to the old film noir classic, The Big Sleep, a Raymond Chandler story. The plot was so convoluted that Chandler entirely lost track of several characters and plot lines in the book. It didn't matter in the movie because of the iconic and sizzling acting and chemistry by Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall along with the rest of a talented cast. You can kind of see the plot elements of a noir type mystery but it's definitely given the Coen twist. To me The Dude is as much of an existential street philosopher as anything else. Lol.

The Dude is played by Jeff Bridges, you should look him up he's been in soo many films, 'The Fisher King' is one of my favourites (also with Robin Williams... No need to say any more). John Goodman is also in a lot of films, 2(?) More Cohen Bros ones (Barton Fink is my favourite) but also Spielberg's 'Always' (with Richard Dreyfuss, Hooper from Jaws) 😮is an underated romantic treat and Sam Elliot is the cowboy with the epic moustache also in 'Road House' with Patrick Swayze and a bit of a cult classic

I live in Alberta Canada so I am able to help you with your question as to watt is a steer? Is a male cattle that has been castrated at a younger age won’t grow up to be as big and muscular as a bull. Steers, along with some of the cows will be used for beef. As where the bull and some of the cows will be used for breathing. So steers are castrated male cattle… P.S. You did ask the question not conversation I typically have lol..

Thank you for the reaction! There's a lot of trivia available for this film. My favorite being that the nihilist who was missing her toe was played by the lead singer of Til Tuesday (the 80s band that made the songs "Voices Carry" and my personal favorite of theirs, "Coming up Close").

1) A steer is a bull (male cow) that has been castrated. It's typically done to make for faster growing and more tender beef. If it's done to make animals for farm work (in the 19th century) then it's call an ox, rather than a steer. 2) What did the doctor do? The doctor simply checked the Dude for "unpleasant diseases," in preparation for his use as a personal "sperm donor" for Maude.

I lived with a dude who had that car. We called it The Tank. One night for obvious reasons it remained parked at a certain Chicago bar. I was the lucky guy who answered the phone when the police found it. You gotta understand, Sparky was...unique. Explaining to the cops that most of the (damage) was not honestly (vandalism) should have been my audition clip to the frickin UN. I had a drink after that. Walked a mile in the snow both ways to have a drink. If you ever are anywhere that is not Chicago, then you're allright. Hell envies that place.

A steer is a castrated bull, usually raised for beef. Sam Elliott, the cowboy narrator, mispronounces tuchis as tookis. Tuchis is Yiddish for ass, bum, backside, "darker than a black steer's tuchis." Jeff Bridges, the Dude, is one of America's finest film actors. He has been in over 90 films and TV shows. The son of actor Lloyd Bridges (the guy in _Airplane!_ who guessed he picked the wrong day to quit smoking, drinking, amphetamines, sniffing glue), he started acting as a child on his father's popular TV show, _Sea Hunt._ Jeff Bridges has received Oscar nominations for seven of his films, winning Best Actor for _Crazy Horse_ (2009). A cult favorite film of his is _The Fisher King_ (1991), which also stars Robin Williams.

Jeff Bridges is also in the Coen Bros brilliant western TRUE GRIT. You can see him being young and beautiful in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (a tragic, beautiful film) FAT CITY (also tragic and beautiful), and the one that's maybe closest in tone to this, WINTER KILLS, a crazy paranoid thriller that's also very funny.

Yes, we ALL know that Jeff Bridges as Lebowski was exceptional and cannot be beat, but have you experienced the full Jeff Bridges? If not, you need to see him in The Last Picture Show, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Heaven's Gate, Tron, Starman, Nadine, Tucker, The Fabulous Baker Boys, and The Old Man. Only then, will you fully understand the range of this four-time Oscar nominee. The guy simply rocks in his roles (yes, that pun was intentional). Yes, hats off to John Goodman here too.

The jellies were Jeff's own shoes; White Russian is a mixed drink that is the Dude's beverage (vodka w/Kahula w/creme & ice); the mustachioed gent - who narrates - is the great Sam Elliott and yep he's in STAR IS BORN; steer is a male cow basically cattle; Jackie Treehorn is the porn producer of the 'Logjammin' ' video. Jeff Bridges is a truly amazing actor - I recommend the following to see his range THUNDERBOLT & LIGHTFOOT (w/Clint Eastwood - his 1st Oscar nomination too); STARMAN; THE FISHER KING & FEARLESS off the top of my head. I knew you'd love this film.

Jeff Bridges is the son of actor, Lloyd Bridges, who played the air traffic controller ("looks like I picked the wrong day to quit taking amphetamines - Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue") in AIRPLANE!. The purple bowling guy is John Turturro. You could catch John Turturro and John Goodman both in OH BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? (2000) George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, also a Cohen piece, and very funny. I'd like to see your reaction to that. I always enjoy your reactions -
