One of the clever things I love about this movie is the dialogue that shifts from one scene to another. The lines that make prefect sense within their own context, but also mesh seamlessly with the conversation going on in an entirely different place. Like Zorg being upset about the missing stones and Leeloo describing where they are. That whole conversations- those two conversations- wind back and forth so well. And it happens other times, as well. Very cleverly done. I've never seen it done quite this way, or this well, anywhere else.

This is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Some fun tid bits for you: The language Leeloo speaks is a fully developed language. Milla learned it in it's entirety for the role. Her full name is Leeloominaï Lekatariba-Lamina-Tchaï. The "Ekbat de Sebat" at the end of her name is a title meaning "The honorable". Her name in the language roughly translates to "Precious Stone of the Earth, Defender of Light and Life" The Aria that the Diva Plavalaguna sings was performed by Inva Mula. She recorded the song in full then in post production they keyed a synth with each note she recorded from the section with the super rapid note changes and swapped that portion out as the changes occur faster than the human body can produce the sounds. The Aria is a testament to her range and capabilities as a singer and performer. Great reaction and I can't wait to see you finish the "Band of Brothers" series.

It always has to be mentioned: It's one of the rare moments where a time bomb's countdown actually takes place in real time (at least until the last 5 seconds part, where Gary Oldman's character pauses it, of course). It just adds so much to the feeling of time running out, compared to countless other movies where it somehow seems they have too much and too little time at the same time. :)

Fun Fact: Before Milla Jovovich was cast as Leeloo, Luc Besson originally wanted to cast Julia Roberts in the role, along with Mel Gibson playing Korben Dallas and the Singer, Prince playing Ruby Rhod, and I think production was set for 1992 but I think due to financial issues, production was delayed. Whilst Luc Besson was casting for the role of Leeloo, Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie from 'Saved by the Bell' and Nomi Malone from 'Showgirls') auditioned for the role. Side note: Before Gary Oldman was cast, I want to know who Luc Besson maybe originally had in mind for the role of Zorg.

A few more names that you might recognise... the archeologist at the start was John Bluthal (also seen in the Vicar of Dibley), Zorgs henchman "Right arm" was the rapper 'Tricky', the priest was Ian Holm (also played "Ash" in 'Alien'), the artist at the start was Luke Perry (was also in "Beverley Hills, 90210"), the scientist early on was Christopher Fairbank (was also one of the two low-life bad guys in Batman (from 1989), as well as "Moxy" in 'Auf Weidersen Pet', and "The Broker" in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'), and the general was Brion James (also played "Leon" in 'Bladerunner'). The operatic song is known as "The Diva Dance", and only a handful of operatic singers can sing it correctly as it was purposefully written to be unsingable by humans. Oh, and Corben Dallas and Mr Zorg never actually meet, regardless of Zorg giving the instruction to an aide to fire a large number of employees... Corben being one of them.

This is my number one favorite movie, I have a 5 foot by 8 foot mural from the movie release. When I was in Japan and the movie came out I went into the Japanese town near me to buy cakes and stopped at a movie store that had VHS tapes. The movie store had a mural on the wall for The Fifth Element and I was blown away and wanted it. I went to the counter, didn't speak a word of Japanese and I pointed at the mural on the wall and reached into my pocket and grabbed all of the yen coins I had, not knowing the handful of yen I unloaded on the counter was worth about 200 dollars (I was a dumb American). The Japanese guy behind the counter shook his head no no no, pushed the yen back to me and a second Japanese guy came out from behind a wall and handed me a folded-up mural of the same pattern. The mural is a picture of when Mila Jovovich jumps off of the building before she falls into the taxi. This mural has been on my wall since 1996, that is 27 friggin years! This is my most favorite movie! Thank you for reacting.. you enjoyed this movie as much as I did, thanks again!

Congratulations on watching one of the best sci-fi movies ever made! It’s an amazing and wild ride that’s full of imagination. There’s so much about this film that I love but by far my favourite element is the music. My favourite piece is the music that plays over the end credits. It’s so beautiful and ethereal and romantic. Just stunning. I’m really glad you enjoyed this film so much. I guarantee it’s a movie that you’ll watch again and again. @tranya327 Жыл бұрын
Great reaction, to a GREAT film! •••• Mila Jovovich is pronounced Mee-luh Yo-vo-vitch. Y, in place of the 'J' sound. •••• "Major Iceborg" is indeed supposed to look like a 'fat Princess Leia' - the hairstyle is this film's tip-of-the-hat to the famous Star Wars character. •••• I think the idea was that Leeloo's "first" body (which we never got to see) was inside the sarcophagus taken by the Mandoshiwans (the mechanized aliens) early in the film. •••• I think Korben kissed Leeloo, because of the VERY strange circumstances up until then: He was looking for 'the perfect woman' and the literal 'Perfect Woman' just so happens to crash into his cab. Then she passes out, and then he learns that she's "mankind's most precious possession." Did some unseen Power cast him in the role of Alpha Male hero/Prince Charming? Maybe his role was to wake 'Sleeping Beauty' with a 'magic kiss'? Korben has a romantic side. His conclusion was mistaken, but come now: was he REALLY an idiot for arriving at that conclusion? •••• When Ruby Rhod lets out that huuuge, long, high-pitched 'girl-scream,' it'd be interesting to know if that was really Chris Tucker's voice, or did they dub in an artificial scream, to make it sound more ridiculous? •••• Ruby Rhod gets my vote as maybe the best scene-stealing character of all time. Second place probably goes to Billy Crystal as Miracle Max, in The Princess Bride.

Great reaction to an awesome movie! The opening scene with the archaeologist took place in 1914. 300 years later the evil was to return, so the year in the movie is at least 2214. According to the movie it takes place in 2263. Leeloo was the supreme being in the thing that looked like a human coffin taken from Egypt in 1914. The Mondoshawans (sp?) were the guardians of the stones and the fifth element, not the same species as the fifth element. Ian Holm (who also plays Bilbo) was awesome as Father Vito Cornelius. Who would blame Dallas for having that impulse? I'd want to kiss Milla Jovovich too. 😀 Zorg doesn't need the fifth element. As Vito Cornelius said, if evil stands on that spot with the four stones, light becomes darkness and life becomes death. Zorg wants to get the stones for Mr. Shadow, as he calls him. Brion James, who plays General Munro, is probably best known for playing Leon in the film Blade Runner, but he's been a guest star on a lot of TV shows I watched when I was younger too. Unfortunately, he passed away a couple of years after this movie came out. But I love his character in this film. Apparently Mr. Shadow can cause one's brain to bleed? It's a really cool effect, whatever it is. I had no idea who Lee Evans was before this, probably for obvious reasons, but I loved him as Fog in this movie. Poor sod. 😀 I LOVE the comment The President (Tiny Lister) makes after Fog's "Where did he learn to negotiate like that?". And General Munro's reaction just makes it all the better. 😀😀😀 "Why Earth?" Because when the temple to the fifth element was first built it was a primitive world with no real civilizations and nothing to recommend it, so it was the perfect out of the way spot to hide the temple because there was no reason for anyone to go there. 😀 The look on The President's face when Korben's mother is on the phone. Priceless. 😀 Such a great movie with such a great cast! I always enjoy watching this one again. 🙂

One of the only movies I know where the bad guy and the hero never meet in person.

Amazing comedy performances from team. It was a great film from the late 90s. It is remembered fondly for so many reasons.

Many of the monsters, background props, big wide shots and other things here and there are from sci-fi movies and TV shows as sight gags, see how many you spot. e.g.. Flying car city is 'Blade Runner' and the cars are from Pixar's 'Cars' or 'Rodger Rabbit'. Big gold monster is Kosh from 'Babylon 5". 3 rocket in tail of ship launching is from early 'Battlestar Galactica'. Little and big things.

5:25 It’s a photo of the view of the hallway from Corbin’s eyehole. So it would look like no one was at the door.

Fun fact, since you are a Scot: The first half of the diva song is the "Madness Aria" from the 3rd act of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor;" the opera was based upon a romanticized Scotland in Sir Walter Scott's novel, "The Bride of Lammermoor."

My brother introduced me to this movie right after it came out and I've loved it ever since. He also introduced me to 'The Matrix'. Love your review. You are so intelligent. It's as if you were in the mind of the producers and screenwriters.

This was definitely the right one. It had action and humour. Unforgiven was a serious movie.

This is a brillant movie, I actually saw it when it came out and absolutely loved the quirkiness and 90s-haute-couture-meets-Star Wars aesthetics! It's so fun too, closest recent thing that have at least some of the appeal would probably be Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets but it can't quite compare.

Ok, this is the second movie of yours I've watched and they both were "the best movie ever." I see a trend. 😁This movie won a bunch of awards or was nominated. I'm pretty sure it won best costume design. Deservedly so.
