The doctors trying to save Murphy sound very realistic - because they are a real ER team. The director wanted the scene to be as genuine as possible so he paid a real crew to come in for the scene.

The interesting part about that scene, is that one of the doctors ask the other one what time is it, she said 6:15 "Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the *new creation* " ~ Galatians The New International Version *6:15* And toward the end of the movie Robocop was walking on the water like Jesus Christ. "For in *Christ Jesus* neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a *new creature* " ~ Galatians *6:15* - King James Version That was pretty clever of the director to make a bible reference toward the death of Murphy that would lead a new creation of Robocop, by having the time of when they gave up to the same bible number verse to where that "a new creation" line comes in.

Because director Paul Verhoeven is Dutch and Jost Vocano (his director of photography for that scene) is German, they didn't realize how insulting "bitch" is in English, and they kept addressing and referring to the two actresses bitches while they were shooting the scene. The actresses took it in stride, and Miguel Ferrer and Kurtwood Smith kept cracking up.

Clarence Boddicker is definitely in my top five cinema villains of all time. Choosing Kurtwood Smith to play that role was a brilliant bit of casting, precisely because he doesn't fit the stereotype at all. But he he does bring a ton of ice cold psychopathy to the role, which is exactly what the character needed.

@@robertzamora4282 It's only proof that Murphy _legally_ died. "There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead." He was beyond saving by conventional hospital means, but the simple fact RoboCop worked is proof he wasn't beyond saving. That's a big reason OCP wiped his memory - not only to make him more compliant but also their attempt to cover up any sentience that remained. They wanted a product slave to their whims, not a worker. It's a very weird grey area. If Futurama-style Heads in Jars were standard, for example, maybe the legal definition for dead would change.

The fact that this movie even got made is pretty remarkable. From production delays to Peter Weller not being able to move in the suit, this movie went through quite a few trials. Fortunately, it overcame them because it's a terrific movie whose satire holds up to this day. Peter Weller created a character who can't be duplicated, though many have tried. You should definitely watch Roocop 2.

I was working in a video rental store in '87 and they hired a guy to come in dressed as Robocop when it was released on VHS. It was very well done, it was very solid and I believe the feet even made that sound when he moved, I had a picture of him throttling me by the throat, it was a fun day!

There has been talk of a new Robocop movie for years written by the guys that did the original, but it has not been able to get off the ground. I'd love to get everyone from the original involved with it, including Paul Verhoeven and Peter Weller. I'm sure Peter would insist on a redesigned suit that works the way it's supposed to and doesn't constantly pinch him when he moves, etc.

"Either this is going to be a comedy... or it's gonna be dead serious" You were kinda right on BOTH! It's more of a satire than a pure comedy but it has funny bits, yeah. It's one of the few movies where I can go and say it's a 10/10. Also, you can't imagine how long I've waited for someone to react to this movie without knowing ANYTHING because I always wantet to see someone's FIRST TIME reaction to gradually seeing Robocop be more and more revealed... first you see the arm, then a glimpse of the head, then a blurred image of the upper body through the glas... whereas my first experience with the movie was seeing a friend basically rewind through all the talking bits (cause the movie was in a foreign language) and just watching the action sequences, with me sitting right next to him. Kind of an odd experience for a 9 year old. :D Also, people recommended other Paul Verhoeven sci-fi movies: Starship Troopers and Total Recall and you should see both instead of watching any of the Robocop sequels (although Robocop 2 is still decent and has some cool ideas and great visual effects but I'd stop at that one because Robocop 3 is utter trash).

Every aspect of this film is perfect - the satire, special effects, social commentary, soundtrack, directorial style, performances.... But what really sets it apart, for me, is that it has a soul. The scene where Murphy returns to his home and has his flashbacks, aided by the stunning music, always gets me. What could have easily turned out to be a dud became a timeless, all time classic.

Great Movie. .You know that it took allot of takes for the scene where Robocop catches the key. Also Paul Verhoeven which is the director of the movie is the guy who catches the gun in the club and also the guy who scream in the car commercial. Other great Paul Verhoeven movies Total Recall, Starship troopers and Hallow Man. Fyi the secretary of Dick Jones is the actual wife of the bad guy Clarence :) . Other great robot movies are Short Circuit (1 and 2) and Bicentennial Man. Also kind movie with a robot or at least AI is Flight Of The Navigator 1986.

The sound design is brilliant - especially the heavy sound of his footfalls. I think he died die but they revived him, at least the bits they wanted. Dead and not dead is very murky territory these days. People are temporarily 'killed' for surgery in some cases.

You can thank makeup effects artist Rob Bottin and his talented team for making all the gore, the toxic waste, Alex Murphy's robot-half-head, and the whole RoboCop suit, among the many other effects of people being shot and such. Bottin's work can be found in films such as Se7en, Total Recall, The Thing, Legend (Dawn, you should TOTALLY add "Legend" to your list. You would LOVE it!), The Howling, as well as contributing to Star Wars. The practical makeup effects of the late 70s to early 90s are some of the best ever made. With absolutely no CGI to fall back on whatsoever, artists had to be super creative in using practical effects, and it showed. Real things happening in real time, in-camera: you just can't beat it. CGI has made fantastic contributions to the reality of film effects; it's a major player with good reason. But there remains something about practical effects that is just so visceral and raw.

You asked how Dick Jones got Directive 4 into RoboCop. There's actually a very good fan theory about that. Jones probably ran the idea by the Old Man who thought it was a good safeguard to protect the company from its own creation. That's how he knew what to do about it at the end when Jones took him hostage.

I guess all the follow-ups have something interesting about them, but none of them is even half as good as the original. Maybe they should have gone with Dawn's idea and made the female partner a cyborg in the sequel. Imagine how much fun Verhoeven would have had with "Ms. Robocop".

@@ThreadBomb Verhoeven's story telling is about identity, finding one's true self. This can be seen in Basic Instinct and Starship Troopers. Murphy's journey to find himself was pretty much over after the first film.

Filmed in Dallas Texas because of the then futuristic buildings that were built in downtown in the early 80s oil boom. And it gets HOT AF in the summer and he was sweating bad in that suit. It's supposed to take place around 2040.

They had an actual "red response" team to this when murphy died. They were shocked how fast paced it was, and regular calm the doc/nurses were, then it just ended w/ "the call". They themselves were stunned and had to include original footage that was supposed to be mock trial footage w/ actors. Ive worked in the ER, and it is like that.

There is a Robocop 2, and it is the rare sequel that is just as good as the original. Stay away from Robocop 3 and the remake, though. Great reaction.

Believe it or not it is actually pretty simple, you just have to unscrew the fuse and change it out with a different fuse for a grenade. Fragmentation grenades usually have a very short fuse but fuses for smoke grenades have an instant fuse which is why when you see soldiers "pop smoke", it happens instantly so you simply switch the fuses, simple. Essayons!

There was originally some more wrap-up scenes at the end, but during test screenings the audience went so nuts upon the "Murphy" line that they decided to end it right there on the highest emotional high.

The "Melting Man" is to this day still one of the greatest practical effects ever. Clarence Bodicker was played by Kurtwood Smith. This was his first dramatic role ever as all his previous movies had been romantic comedies. People were so wondering if Verhofen had lost it casting Kurtwood Smith as the villain. The same with Ronnie Cox, the guy who played Dick Jones, that was his first role as a villain ever as he was typecast as the dad-type in romantic movies. So, in a way, he and Kurtwood Smith were alike.

The some lore suggests that in the end only Murphy's brain and some stomach was used, full-body prosthesis as Bob Morton said. So his face was sythetic and he had a metal skull underneath, so being shot there wouldn't be lethal.

"Fun" fact: The scene where Murphy was shot in the head was used with an animatronic Murphy. It was SO realistic they had to stop filming the rest.of.the day to make sure everyone was alright mentally, and to make sure.their lunch was still in stomachs

Robocop's gun was supposed to be a Desert Eagle, but it ended up looking too small in his robo hands. So eventually the Beretta 93R was chosen and had a bunch of greebles and stuff attached to make it bigger.

@@KrazyKat007 Don't spark-up near a gas pump. The spark may ignite the gas. Play it safe and DO NOT spark up. Use your self-control and DO NOT spark-up around the pumps at a gas station. Use your self-control to avoid telling people to behave irrationally. A lit cigarette cannot possibly burn hot enough to ignite gasoline, and worrying about it happening is irrational. Try to light a lighter off a cigarette and you will put out the cigarette. Just because stuff is burning does not mean it burns at the same temperature as any other stuff. Even rubbing alcohol, which burns at a very low temperature, will put out a cigarette. Hollywood sells make-believe fantasies. For example: In the real world: 50% of headshots survive but only 25% of heartshots survive, but if you ask a movie fan they'll tell you something closer to: 1% of headshots survive while surviving a heartshot is a 50/50 proposition. Even a car's ignition, which is hot enough to burn gas, will not ignite gas fumes around a gas station. Even a car fire is unlikely to ignite the gas fumes around a gas station. But DO NOT spark up around the gas pumps, that lighter spark is VERY hot and is intended specifically to ignite flammable gas in an open-air setting. Use YOUR self-control and DO NOT tell people to behave irrationally and/or to fear the impossible. A cigarette will NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES set gasoline fumes on fire. Do not worry about cigarettes near gas pumps.

It’s almost a perfect symmetrical movie, everything that happens at the beginning of the movie happens again in the second half but in reverse order. Including the Robocop title. It’s actually studied for that reason in script writing classes.

The bad guy in the beginning of the film is Kurtwood Smith--who went on to play Red in That Seventies Show The director, Paul Verhoeven, went on to direct Total Recall, Starship Troopers, and, most famously, Showgirls.

First time I saw Robocop... I was 5 years old. My granny was babysitting me. She had to do some work and thought having me watch a movie would be a good idea. My parents had rented Robocop and my Grandma took the logo and name for a Kids movie and the two or three times she came to the living room, the scenes were quite tame... I watched it to the end and when my parents came home, my granny got a long and loud talk with them. I on the other hand, just thought the movie was cool... Guess I already was crazy back then :-D
