Natalie... a few things about some of the points you brought up: McDonalds: They indeed shelled out a sizeable sum of money to be in the movie. It's how some movies get the investment they need to be made, through sponsorship deals. In return, the company gets the rights to use the film's tie-in for their own promotions. Fashion: Luc Besson went to almost all of the French fashion houses, and many of them opted to have a small part in the movie. Hence the Chanel makeup thingy, a lot of ads in the background for stuff like Dior, etc. The biggest impact of the fashion industry on the film was that all of the costumes were designed by Jean-Paul Gauitier.

My favourite movie. It's just pure fun. Even the actors laugh. In the scene where Corbin threatens Ruby and he says "super green", he looks at his hair and breaks character and laughs. Because everyone was just having fun. In the Showbiz Kids documentary, Milla speaks about how important this movie was to her continuing as an actor.

"How is there a single goddamn soul that is not on the side of life?!" Me: (deadpan stare) Gee. I wonder. Edit: More helpfully - this is French comics in a nutshell. They've inspired US-made stuff for over 50 years now. It's often shallow but fun, or surprisingly deep. All the alien effects were practical. All of it. No CG. And the reason the Mondoshawans had no defenses is because they're pacifist (hence why Leeloo didn't know what war is until she looked it up). The trash thing is because of a strike, there's protesters in the airport and it's mentioned in the news at one point.

When this movie came out the critics hated it. I went to see it in the cinema with a group of friends because I liked the other movies that Luc Besson made before this and we all had a blast. I assume that they were just expecting a serious SciFi movie, but this has so many elements of a farce, that it's a weird amalgamation of comedy, action adventure, love story and SciFi. Which makes it uniquely itself. It was his homage to the French comic book series " Valérian and Laureline". He did get the chance to make a movie directly based on that comic book series a couple of years ago with "Valerian and the city of a thousand planets", which is ok in my book, but would probably been much better if he had cast the main characters a bit more mature.
