So, sources differ, but the most prevalent version of his story these days is that he did not, in fact, stay back during the siege of Troy. Instead, he violently dragged the Trojan princess Cassandra from Athena's temple (where she was begging Athena for protection), and in some versions he also forced himself on her. Athena was rightfully infuriated by this, and when the Greeks didn't kill him as punishment, she caused a storm that sank many of their ships, including his. In some versions Athena kills him, in others he survives her attack only to immediately piss of Poseidon and get killed by him instead. All in all, it would have probably been better for everyone if Ajax just did what he was f*ing told told.

Lol I think "stay back" is a reference to his role in the Illiad. Where he and his brother where mostly responsible for things like counter attacking, guarding the ships, and defending retreats. They didn't lead any of the big Greek attacks. But they where still super important to the Greek war effort. I would argue his older brother spent like 60% of the Illiad carrying the Greek Army.
