Of course, when diligent about *maximizing* the *value* you get from cards (like you do), the fees absolutely make sense. I question it's requirements. I don't make enough or spend enough to get the black card but have gotten a invite for it. I also don't have the platinum card. I only have a CD with American Express What I did was I shredded it. The benefits are not worth it. The only time those travel cards that charge fees are worth it is if you are a business person constantly doing travel. I don't need to sit in a lobby in the hour I am waiting for my plane and I can do things like wait in line to show my passport etc. If anything I get more from cards like my Costco card because I can get around 40 dollars a year from gas alone with that card.

@Mike Smullin Some people cannot get a chase credit card though. If you have applied for 5 credit cards in the last 2 years you cannot get a chase credit card. Again I am just not a fan of fees on credit cards in general. I can get the Costco cash back card and get 4% back on gas, 2% shopping at Costco and 3% eating out or double cash back with the Citi visa card and all those cards are free. I just don't travel enough to take advantage of any travel perks and I mentioned. I go on vacation every 2-3 years as vacations often turn into layoffs in my field.

I had a Platinum card for a while, I used the concierge a few times. They can do things other than just making reservations (don't know about video editing). One my requests to a obtain a toy for a now former friend's kid. This toy was sold out every where, they couldn't find it, I couldn't find it, so I ask the concierge to find it. Told them the specifics, gave them a max purchase price and a shipping address, and two days later got a call they had located the toy, and it was being shipped.

The Platinum concierge is a bit better than calling the restaurant, though. There have been times when I couldn’t get a reservation on OpenTable but I gave the task to the concierge and after a couple of days they got it for me at the time I asked for. They will try over and over and they also have special reserved seats at some restaurants. Same goes for event tickets: they will wait online at the moment tickets go on sale and try to grab them for you, even having multiple browsers open to maximize your chances. On the other hand I’ve never been super impressed with their restaurant recommendations. I’ve heard the Centurion concierge however can be super useful if you get the right dedicated concierge.

If you are using concierge for only restaurant reservations, you are definitely missing out. Think locating an item similar to one you had when you were a kid, sending a snowball to Arizona, gift ideas for your grandma, et cetera. Concierge gets bored with things that can be done with a few clicks online. Give them a challenge.

I have to say Amex is a marketing genius. They turned the 80th myth into a highly desirable card product, dealt with cardmembers with "undesirable demographics" by raising the AF, and adding an initiation fee, that made it even more desirable and maintaining its mystique. I do think there are probably customized perks offered based on cardmember's spend, but they would probably get that with a Green Card.

I'll say one thing that I can definitely disagree with Graham on is his shilling for annual fees. His argument is always "Well, numerically speaking, what you get back in rewards and benefits outweighs the annual fee!" The problem with that is that what if I don't travel all the time? Or what if I don't really care about "priority pass lounge access." Sure it may be valuable in a numerical sense but it's only worthwhile if you actually have a genuine use for the benefits and rewards the credit card offers you.
