The other thing I love about the kaleidoscope metaphor is remembering the times as a kid that I would try to turn a kaleidoscope, and then try to turn it back, and realizing that you can never actually go back to what it looked like once it changes. I really like the layer it adds to the song where she's saying "yeah, I can go back to being friends" knowing full-well she's totally lying to herself

Great reaction! Chappell is so great at changing her voice to fit different styles but also part of the reason her voice sounds so different on each song is because they were recorded over a two year period. Pink Pony Club and California were recorded in early 2020 for her original record label who then dropped her for not selling as many records as they thought she should (hence the lyrics to California). She then moved back home to Missouri for a while before returning to LA to give a music career one more shot. He began self-releasing singles through 2022 and 2023 until she was signed to a new label and released the full album in the fall of 2023. In total, 9 of the songs on this record were released as singles in 2020, 2022 & 2023.

Her EP School Nights is one of my favorites. She sings it like only in her lower voice. But I saw her sing the EP live when she opened for Vance joy. Literally best thing ever. And she’s genuinely so nice :)

Highly recommend Remi Wolf - if you love Chappell, you'll love Remi! Her album Big Ideas is narrative, so the tracks blend together. And she has a fantastic Tiny Desk! Remi has a lower register voice, I'm sure you'll love it. My favorite tracks on Big Ideas is Toro, Cherries & Cream, Frog Rock and Wave. But the whole album is a 10/10 for me, same as Chappell's album. Edit to add: My top three on Chappell's album (if I have to pick) would be Kaleidoscope, Coffee and Red Wine Supernova! Though I feel like my favorites change every time I listen to the whole album lol. After Midnight is so groovy though, Pink Pony Club & HOT TO GO are both anthems, just...10/10 album.

About if the Pink Pony club is real or not there ARE clubs throughout America called The Pink Pony but the specific club that Chappell is referencing in this song isn't actually the Pink Pony club. It's a different gay club in California called The Abbey, from what she has said in interviews Lol... So it's kind of like a yes and no situation!... Clubs of that name exist... but the one Chappell is singing about isn't called that lmao
