Vampires are not part of the Romanian folklore. The association between Romania (Transilvania) and vampire is due Bram Stoker. His character is inspired from a real Romanian historical figure: Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Empaler) was the ruler of Wallachia (today, the south of Romania), not of Transilvania. He lived in the 1400 hundreds, being contemporary of Matia Corvin, the Hungarian king (that was half Romanian) whose big statue you have just seen in the middle of Cluj-Napoca. Vlad is a national hero. He was cruel, but just. He killed in horrible ways (empaling was his method of choice) muggers, rapists, thugs, traitors, beggars who pretended to be crippled etc. , but honest man had nothing to fear. Under his rule, Wallachia experienced an economical boom. He also fought agains the Ottoman Turks, led by Mahomed the Second, the conqurer of Constantinopol. He was a brilliant strategist on the battlefield. Vlad Tepes, as his father before him (Vlad Dracul), was a member of The Dragon League, a Christian chivarlic order established to fight the expansion of the Ottomans. This fact is at the origins of the name Dracula. It is a semantic confusion: Vlad the Empaler, being a member of this league, as a mentioned before, was nicknamed Vlad the Dragon, but the medieval Romanian language didn't contain this word (back in the days, the Romanian word for this creature was 'balaur', very different from the Latin word - I guess it is of Latin origins - 'dragon'. Instead, the Romanian word for the devil was (and still is) 'dracul', similar at a certain extent with the word 'dragon'. So Vlad the Dragon became Vlad Dracul or Draculea. This facts, combined with his cruelness (a just cruelness, I repeat) sparked the imagination of Bram Stoker, and the rest is history. Cheers !!!

Great description, down to the smallest detail, but I do want to add something, in regard of our friend's initial question. While it is true that vampires only became a thing for Romanians after Bram Stoker's book, we do have somewhat of a similarity from our folklore (that might have also served as an inspiration for mister Stoker). That would be the "strigoi". While this mythological creature comes in many variations, such as "striga" (coming from Strix, which means owl in latin... thus refering to a "nightwalker") or the creature known in english as a "lich" , in Romania it is the closest thing we have to a vampire. Much like a vampire, the Strigoi is a risen undead creature, which used to be a human that either broke an oath, led a live of sin, was cursed by a family member or a loved one or committed suicide. If one of the aforementioned conditions was met, then in seven days, the corpse would rise as a Strigoi, and haunt the villagers, praying upon them and... you guessed it... sucking their blood, in order to sustain itself. The giveaway for a Strigoi was that if his casket would be opened the next day after the burial, the corpse would not be facing up, but would rather sit on its side or on its belly. The countermeasures were: tied with a chain and garlic put in its mouth; pinned with a stake through the heart; decapitated and had holy water poured over it; ask a priest to "exorcise" the corpse and rebury it with a rosemary and a cross on its chest. I hope I satisfied your curiosity regarding the Romanian "vampires". Cheers !

Hi, I'm from Iasi and you should definitely visit my city, when it' s safe to travel again. It's the historical capital of Romania, it's a blend of old and new and constantly changing. We have residents from all over the world that come here for our universities or for work, so it's pretty diverse in the culinary and shopping experiences. Also we have the first and the biggest botanical garden in Romania, inaugurated in 1856, it sits on approximately 100 hectares of land and the rose garden alone is reason enough to visit, it has over 800 species of roses. You should look up videos of Iasi to see also the Palace of culture that houses 4 different museums now.

What you've seen in this video it's just the preserved medieval parts of our cities and nature that most tourists are interested in, but there's a lot more than that. There's a bit of everything out here. As for the Dracula's myth and vampires, that's Bram Stoker's fault, he created this story around a 15th century Romanian prince Vlad the Impaler also known as Vlad Dracul. He became notorious for the brutal tactics he employed against his enemies and his preferred method was impalement, or driving a wooden stake through their bodies and leaving them to die of exposure. It was said he used to drink the blood of his enemies and all that but it's just fiction. 😄

There is plenty of shopping in every city but major Cities are the ones in this video including Timisoara, Iasi, Cluj-Napoca.... there is soo much to see in România. Absolutely beautiful, rich in history and the people are so nice! Not talking about the political situation...hey politics is a mess everywhere in the world but the regular people are always the same. Romanians don’t and never believed in vampires. That’s a Hollywood myth... if you ever go and visit, take your time and take it all in just the way it is. This country is so beautiful, one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The monasteries are one thing everyone should see and there are plenty all around the country. As someone else said, this video captured some of the tourist attractions, more of the historical part of Romania. City life is the opposite of what you've seen there but as tourists most people would like to see unique places and learn about the historical/cultural side of the country rather than the modern one. There are other videos about the music festivals ( known as some of the best in Europe), clubs, shopping centres and big modern architecture, which are targeting the younger people. Videos like the one you've seen are more popular as they present attractions suitable for all ages. Would be so cool to see you as a tourist there sharing your impressions.

The vampire story is just a mythology, why? Because of Vlad Tepes. During his reign, Wallachia temporarily gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire. Vlad Țepeș became famous for his severity and because he used to shoot his enemies with spikes, which he left hanging to scare the Ottomans, for that the ottomans named Vlad Tepes alias Dracula . Romania has a beautiful, very beautiful history.

for shopping/clubs/pubs/bars/malls etc you can actually do that in every city in towns there aren't usually malls or big clubs or smthing like that, but there's always a city nearby that has them I guess when romanians splurge we go to Bucharest (the capital of Romania) because there are the biggest malls in the country, shops and brands from all over the world, you can find literally anything in Bucharest if you know where to look for it since Bucharest is in the south and Cluj-Napoca is in the northern part of the country, it just depends on where you're from cause no one is gonna drive 10 hours (or just sit in a train for 13-15 hours) from northern Romania just to go to Bucharest, they're gonna go to Cluj for the big malls and crazy clubs and all that actually since Cluj is more like a campus-city (it has the biggest university in the country) it is filled with young people so the whole vibe in that city is just really cool, there's an actual street dedicated to pubs/bars/clubs for students ("Piezișei" street) you can find cafes everywhere in Romania, we love coffee almost as much as italians lol so yeah, that video was more towards middle aged tourists that want to get "crazy" during their later years and decide to visit obscure places lol the medieval aspects, the rural places, traditions and stuff like that are great to visit it's sad that it didn't show the other side of romanians and how crazy we get during parties, we're really hospitable, we'll take any (good) stranger on an adventure with us we drink like russians and have fun like we're in Ibiza lol

Hi From Sibiu, Romania :D you asked about that and i tell u that ,interesting is that we Romanians do not believe in vampires. There are people from the older generations, old people from the villages who believe in Strigoi, a kind of vampires, the more authentic Romanian version haha The Romanians from Transylvania don't promote the legend of Dracula so much either, maybe unfortunately, because we could make a lot of money in this sense, probably haha.Although there are many events, for example, Halloween takes place at Dracul's castle in Brasov, where many tourists from all over the world participate.Dracula is a real character in the person of Vlad Tepes who was the leader of Wallachia (the southern part of Romania) and later of Transylvania. He fought against the Ottoman Empire at the time and is considered a national hero, although the mode of torture for enemies or thieves was very brutal. What you saw in this clip are very few things about Romania, I hope you liked it and after all this pandemic ends, we are waiting for you in Romania. If you visit Sibiu, I would be happy to introduce it to you. Take care of yourself bro and I can't wait for a new clip about Romania or Romanian music, maybe pop or dance music also : D Have a nice day bro :D

Watching you from Brașov, dude. Just visit sometime, you will not regret it. Cool video, I am glad you guys get to learn the truth about Romania. When I was there (1.5 years) I had to fight a lot of misconceptions about us. Romania is a great country to visit, living here is harder for the regular citizens but nobody can say anything bad about the country. :) And no, we don't believe in vampires, there are many superstitions but vampires are not among those. We have some other boogie man stories, the vampire stuff comes from Dracula, a fictional character. That character was inspired by Vlad Dracul, his ”thirst for blood” inspired Bram Stoker and Dracula was born. Actually Vlad was vicious just with thieves, murderers, corrupt boyars, etc... in our country he is the main hero, no a vampire. :) Cheers, mate. Loved the video..

To answer your questions : 1. There are sooo many shopping centres in all the cities. In Bucharest there are around 10 huge malls. What you saw in that video is just about 10% of what Romania has to offer and it was, mostly, hystorical places. 2. We do not belive in vampires! Us, as romanians, don’t even make a very big deal about vampires and Dracula, it’s mostly the foreigners that are fascinated with Dracula. And even Dracula did not really exist! The Bran Castel was the castel of one of the romanian leaders, back in the day, that used to impale the thieves and murderers or the people that were trying to conquer his teritory. He was considered very brutal in his punishments and “blood thirsty”, hence the Dracula/vampires miths. But he did not drink blood and there are no vampires in Romania (unless they are in costumes especially for turists). 3. Sibiu was never hungarian!! Translivania had never belong to Hungary (although hungarians like to think that). If you dig in the history a bit, Transilvania was always a part of Romania. The Austro-Hungarian regim did invade Romania and took Transilvania from us, for a short period of time, but we fought and got it back. A lot of hungarians remained in Transilvania though and now they are asking for “rights” (big, long, different story). 4. If you never visited Romania, you’re at a loss! Romania has sooo much to offer to turists!!

So... the story with the vampires is that we had a ruller named Vlad Tepes and he was pretty ruthless, they say we used to have gold/silver cups at fountains because people were to scared to steal as Vlad Tepes was going to impaled pretty much anyone who was not ok. His "thirst" for blood was so big that he scared away not only the romanians but also the enemies. Later on Bram Stoker inveted the vampire we know today, the vampire that drinks blood. Hope that makes sense. We also miss him as he would probabile impale 99% of the politicians.

Vampires are not in the Romanian traditional culture. The concept was invented by Bram Stoker, author that never visited Romania

Ohhh okay thanks bro

@@NyalJAWC The story of the vampires is an association between the story of "Count Dracula" and the ruler Vlad Tepes. The latter was ruthless with thieves and evildoers. He kills them, putting them in a thorn, from bottom to top, like meringues :)) And the story has developed over time. Cheers!
@SuperAngelofglory3 жыл бұрын
Yes they are! Bram Stoker only invented Dracula, but we have countless legends about "strigoi" or "moroi" (which are basically vampires)

I'm from Constanta and I feel like they missed some nice places from here. (And no we don't believe in vampires but we love attracting tourists who are interested in our spooky stories. It's good marketing)

Pretty much every city has shopping centers, especially the big cities. I am from Bucharest. Population wise, Bucharest is kind of the same size as Birmingham (Bucharest - 1.9 million / Birmingham - 1.3 million) , but while Birmingham has one big mall, the Bullring, Bucharest has about 5 to 7 malls, plus shopping areas, some of them are twice or four times the size of Bullring. Honestly there could be more, but I lost count. This video only speaks about a few places. I've been to all, except Constanta (I've only passed through it on the way to the sea side) and the Danube Delta (I hate mosquitos and it is full of them in the summer), but visiting the other places, plus others, I still feel like I only visited 10% of my own country's main attractions and I feel so sorry for that. I am 28 and living in Birmingham now. Every holiday I spend at least 1 or 2 weeks back home and try to visit new or old places. The clubs, nightlife, summer time at the sea side or winter at the mountain side are the BEST!!! :) Oh...and the FOOD! The food is the BEST! :)

Nope, no crocodiles. And no, they don't arrest you for picking the flowers. Usually, first offenders get a warning and if they are caught again, they get a fine! Also, I recommend Targu Jiu if you love art (it hosts the works of Constantin Brancusi, the father of modern European sculpture)

Even after so many years in Canada, I still prefer the Romanian parties the best 😉😁
