Never believe a company that says “we are family here”. You’re not. You are a useful tool to make them money. Nothing more nothing less. Make as much money as you can and learn all the skills you can then move on and upward. Never work for the same company more than 5 years. It makes no sense. You are costing yourself thousands of dollars in pay and benefits

With my company it would have been dumb to leave cause of the pension and insurance that comes with it. Yes, the pay is crappy, but the benefits, sick pay, & vacations make it better. I know many that don't have everything my company has. They jump from job to job and sometimes make more and many times make less. But in the end, they never had a chance to settle where they started to get the benefits from the job.

I gave 4 wks notice when I worked as a financial analyst for the treasurer of a $6B publicly traded company. We were short staffed, I was leaving bc of constant 70 hr work weeks that interfered with raising my sons. I did it so they could hire and I could train my replacement. Everyone including the treasurer stopped talking to me, a hire wasn’t made for 6 months…total waste of my life on my end. I was glad to get out. Bottom line: we are a tool for management, not their friend. Replaceable.

This. There is time to get all of your thoughts about the company off of your chest after you leave their employment. I have certainly said a lot of very negative things about my past employers, by name, on my own blog. But official company channels are not for that. In those channels, you keep it as brief as possible, i.e. I'm leaving, and my last day will be such and such.

I think the most liberating thing I learned in all my years of employment is just what "At Will" employment really means. It is very entertaining when you tell HR what it means after they give the notification to you that your employment is "At Will" It means "I can pack up my desk and leave with or without notice should I encounter bad management." I think more managers need to know and understand this.

When she mentioned that they didn't make her a counter offer, I don't think the point was that she expected a counter offer. Rather, I think the point was that if they were so intent on her staying, they might have given a reason to extend her notice or reconsider it all together. A contrast to the bullying they opted for instead.
@Matt-cr4vv

Exactly. I left a job yesrs ago and our CEO drove to my office to try and counter offer. And face to face he was so amenable. And I didn’t actually ask for more money I only asked to not be forced to relocate like they were originally forcing. And once he was back in his office he was sending douchey emails about it and was suddenly cold about it and denied everything he said he’d be likely to do. So I confirmed I was leaving. The next day I had a bid on my desk and got paid to go home for my notice and was escorted out. But the two weeks off was nice.

Many years ago, I had a row with the VP of the company, so I typed up a resignation letter on the spot and I told them I would give them 2 weeks notice in the letter. They escorted me out of the building that day, and I was perfectly happy to leave that day. When I offered them 2 weeks notice, I was fully aware they may want me out that day but I felt giving them notice was the right thing to do.. I never looked back. Sometimes you have to cut your losses and just move on. P.S. The VP was a sleeze ball and she had an affair with with one of our clients and split up a 25 year marriage. I didn't want to work with her anymore. She got fired 2 years later. I lived happily ever after.

I am a nurse, and have always been an "at will" employee. I have a good friend who gave two weeks' notice and suffered this same thing. I learned that "at will" GOES BOTH WAYS. They don't have to have a reason for firing you, and you don't have to have a reason for quitting. For the first time in 32 years with a spotless, impeccable record, I encountered an impossible situation (related to some impossible people at work), I met with my boss (a "pumps and pearls" nurse who hasn't been in the clinical area since she graduated from nursing school) with my politically correct nicely worded effective immediately resignation letter in my pocket. I listened to her chastise me and make a "plan for improvement" for me, then I slid my letter across the desk without a word and enjoyed seeing her open the envelope, study my note, and enjoyed even more seeing her big fat brightly lipsticked mouth drop open so wide a truck could have driven through it. There were a few moments of awkward silence as she read my short but sweet note and she said "You don't mean this!" I said "Yes I do. It's been a pleasure and an honor working with my colleagues" I had already cleaned out my locker, and I turned my back on her and walked out.This was my day off, so I did not abandon my patients. Now the company (HCA) has a new policy--the 401K match money is only paid on Dec 31st--if you are fired or resign prior to that time, you don't get your match money. I'm pretty sure this is because of people like me. THANKS, HCA, for lying and disrespecting all the RN's who give so much so you can look good and make lots of money. Maybe this is why your company is going tits up and taking on water.

Managers and companies in general will show their true colors when you decide to leave them. Some weirdly view it as a personal rejection even when it isn't. You can leave in the best most respectful way ever and there will still be many employers who take issue with it and make the process hell for you. That's why I never make the mistake of thinking any manager of mine is "different" and actually cares about me anymore. It's just a job, not a family.

Mistake 1: There are some exceptions but never show your emotion to anyone at work, especially to your boss. Coworkers and your bosses are not your friends and 90% of the times they are manipulators, narcissist, sociopaths and psychopaths. They will try to throw you under the bus, manipulate, gaslight and snitch on you for their own good/agenda. Mistake 2: You do NOT need to show respect to the company that you are leaving. All you need to tell them is ‘As required by my employment contract/labour law of the state that I currently reside in, I am required to give a minimum of [notice period] weeks notice and as such I am giving you that [notice period] effective today’. Mistake 3: Waiting to give notice until the busy season is over. Give your notice before the busy season starts and simply give them “It’s not my problem mfers face”. Mistake 4: Picking up the phone call from the company. If they ever ask you to talk on the phone, just simply email them and say “I am going to need all future correspondences archived and on record. So email will be only mode of conversation from this point on” or “I’m sick and can’t talk on the phone so please email”. Define rules of engagement on your favourite terms. You learn life the hard way. People are not as nice as you would expect and you have to have a plan to screw over everyone you work with if push comes to shove. If this young lady recorded everything they said, she could probably sue the company for workplace harassment.

It's sad to hear that giving notice to a job can cause them to start treating you horribly. Especially if it's one of those "We're family" type businesses. Nobody has to give notice. Putting two weeks aside so as not to inconvenience your coworkers is a generosity. This is just going to discourage the next people who want to quit from giving notice. They'll just finish their shift and say they're not coming back, if they finish the shift at all.

No it’s not one sided, your daughter is right, Healthcare is notorious for gaslighting and bullying-sad cause it’s a profession that deals with caring for human lives!

@@travelnurseadventures3225, 100%. My daughter often comments that she doesn't understand why some of her co-workers ever got into their profession if they don't believe in caring for others as human beings. She is a CNA, so it isn't a high paying job! As far as hearing only 1 side of the story, I was simply acknowledging that my child is not perfect (no one's is), so there is always room for her to have had missteps now and again, but from the type of behavior she has described, agreed, it would seem the healthcare field is rife with gaslighting and bullying. So sad and so unnecessary. It does nothing but downgrade everyone's ability to provide excellent patient care. "Team work makes the dream work." I don't know who said it originally, but when people work as a team and pull in the same direction toward the same goals instead of having all the infighting and bullying, it can be a beautiful and joyous thing.

Years ago a man whom I loved decided to dump me. I was blind-sided and in shock. Of course there was another woman--anyone who buys that "It's not you, it's me" crap is a fool. I thought he loved me, things were going fine, and I had planned on a future with him. There were many things I wanted to say, but instead I wrote him a kind letter stating that although it was not my wish to part, I respected his opinion. I thanked him for the good times and wished him well. A few years went by and he contacted me, said he was sorry, he had made a mistake, and wanted me back since I was the best thing that ever happened to him. I ghosted him, refusing to even answer the phone. I WAS the best thing that ever happened to him, but the best thing that ever happened to me was him dumping me.

Therefore I never gave a two week notice Now that I am an employer, I don't hold anyone to that expectation either. These managers have no issue leaving you high and dry, however feel so entitled when you do so and would retaliate so as long as they can get away with it.

Just found this video. This hits close to home as my current employer is so similar. The culture is awful. I cam imagine them handling me leaving with a "bullying" response. They have no care, empathy, leadership, value, respect for anyone. During my 4 years there, several employees have passed away. They didn't even care to attend 2 of them. That's how much they DON'T CARE. I need to get out but don't want to jump into anything else that could be even worse. I know what I want and am working towards it. But in the meantime, working in a toxic environment is very hard.

In this area for decades and across industries, of you give a 2 week notice you should expect to be fired with cause (they provide a justifiable cause) up to and including bad things to have on your record. Sometimes you can immediately quit before the t's are crossed and the i's dotted thus preventing a formal termination; no guarantees what end up in the company's records. Most companies expect a 4 week notice for an executive position.

In the UK we have to give 4 weeks notice.
@Alex_Tribe
@Alex_Tribe Ай бұрын
No...in the UK it depends on what your contractual notice says, but it cannot be less than the statutory notice. It's 1 week notice after you have worked at an employer for 1 month and up to 2 years. After that it will be a week added on each year up to a total of 12 weeks. However, contracts can specify more contractual notice after you pass probation, i.e. 1 month, a term if you're a teacher (so 3 months), or 3 months in lots of other professions. The more senior you are, some will request longer notice periods like 6 months...perhaps a year for a headteacher...etc.
