Obviously I had to react to this amazing trailer! It dropped as a Super Bowl ad last night, and now it's all over the internet. The Wicked movie will be directed by Jon M. Chu, with a screenplay by Winnie Holzman & Stephen Schwartz, and starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Galinda, Ethan Slater as Boq, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard.

ABOUT THE CHANNEL:
Hi! My name is Mateo, I'm a professional musical theatre composer, splitting my time between Toronto & NYC right now.
Every Thursday on this channel, I post a video analyzing the music theory behind some of the great Broadway musicals of all time! In the past, I've analyzed works by Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Pasek & Paul, Jeanine Tesori, and Stephen Schwartz, just to name a few.
Every Sunday on this channel, I post a video update of the progress I'm making on my writing projects, so you can follow along with the process as I create new musicals from scratch.
And every Tuesday on this channel, I post a video clarifying one often-misunderstood music theory concept.
If this sounds like your vibe, don't forget to subscribe! ✨✨✨

at first I didn't know how to feel about Cynthia's riff but now I really love it because Elphaba in that situation would definitely sing it with some rasp and a lot of power considering where she's at in the story

There have been some leaked/drone footage of Ariana singing as Glinda, and it was so musical theatre, that people thought she was lipping to Kristin Chenoweth xD

your appreciation for the inevitable changes is incredibly refreshing! some of these other reactors have left me bummed out with how against it they are without actually thinking about it. this is going to be a 4+ hour experience now rather than 2. there will be MUCH change.

Thank you for mentioning the racial element being important in this casting. I found it odd that they always got a yt women to play a role based on someone who’s discriminated against for the color of her skin throughout the whole story. I don’t care if she was black or non black person of color, I just always felt like the role was always meant for a person of color since they can connect with what the character goes through in a way white women can’t. I’ve always been a fan of wicked but I always felt like it was messed up that they always chose a white women to play a role meant to tell a person of color story whether it’s in fiction form or not.

It may be that here in the us the actress is white but in other countries she is played by actresses of different nationalities and race and ethnicity. Elphaba is not always white. I also disagree that only a person of color can understand what if is to be discriminated against. Ask anyone who has a weight issue or short or any other issue with their appearance. Discrimination is discrimination no matter who it is.

Remember there have been a few different editions of the musical, they used all 8 or 9 of them for the film.

I have zero doubt that Ariana will sing it with a legit approach. People seem to completely disregard her MT background and she knows this score better than probably anyone in the cast.

I love WICKED, too, Mateo (and thank you for your reaction/analysis)! 🧙‍♀ Since you wondered where that new line came from... as I understand, they're splitting it into two movies to incorporate more elements from the novel (which I read when it was fresh, back in 1995). I imagine the line (or something very like it) was in Gregory Maguire's original text.

Alex Brightman could do that raspy sound 8 times a week, but he’s been very open about how much thought and training went into it 😆

Please stop comparing Cynthia to Idina people!!! Y’all theater gays and Idina Stans wouldn’t be satisfied no matter who they cast!! Idina is not the be all and end all of Broadway singers!

Yeah, sorry about that... KZbin did it automatically because of copyright. Why it affected my video and not the many others I've seen that do include the trailer, I'm not sure! (There is a version of my video that includes the trailer over on Patreon, though!)

I am sorry but Elphaba is not a black woman She happens in to being played by a black actress/singer but the character is green which is the whole point. Rather a white woman or a black woman or a Hispanic woman or an Asian woman or a Native American woman or an East Indian woman plays her the minute the green makeup goes on the actress becomes Elphaba a fictional character who anyone can relate too which is why we all love Elphaba.

Exactly. That’s exactly why the topic of race shouldn’t even come up. It’s like arguing about the race of an alien.

I just checked and Wicked has been shown in Japan , Mexico,Brazil, South Korea,Philippines and China as well as many other countries. Not every actor playing Elphaba is white and not everyone is speaking English. Wicked is universal and it doesn’t matter what the race or ethnicity the actor is. Elphaba is Elphaba.

@@RosannasfriendYou’re not making any sense, the story is literally based off someone being discriminated against based off the color of their skin…….
@jancpete
@jancpete 6 ай бұрын
That’s true but to call Elphaba a black woman is not right. There are other races that have been discriminated because of how they look not just African Americans. The Japanese and the Chinese for example. Or how about African Americans with lighter colored skin being told they are “not dark enough” or Hispanics or Native Americans there are always going to be discrimination not just white against black but Japanese gay Korean or Chinese or like I said lighter colored blacks and darker colored blacks. My point is that Elphaba isn’t a black woman. She is green and being discriminated against for the way she looks just like so many of us are. That is the beauty of of the story. We can all relate to it and take something away from wicked To say that Elphaba is a black woman diminishing that universal appeal and boils it down to just one race instead of being relatable to everyone. I was also pointing out out that there have been so many talented actresses that have played Elphaba not just here in the US but all over the world of all different nationalities and races that it really shouldn’t matter what the race of the actress that performs the role but how well she performs it. Elphaba is Elphaba not just the color of her skin but how she changes the people around her and herself for the better.

Also part of the reason that the wizard turned against Elphaba is that she refused to be a part of eliminating the talking animals and using magic and the grimoire to do it. Instead of seeing the wrong of what he was doing he made her the scapegoat. Like the wizard says in the song it all depends on which side writes the history books.
