I’m now the director of the McAdams High School Band. Many of the people in this video are older siblings of my students, and I know the drum major personally. Like you said in this video, you never know what adversity a band is experiencing. The band almost completely disappeared around 2019, but thankfully, now, my staff, the students, and I have built a program that the whole community is proud of. Also, like you said, every year, one of my kid searches up our school and finds this, and it is always heartbreaking for them. Thank you for doing us a justice with this review!

I'm SO relieved at how this video went! I've seen this in my recommended for a few days but I've avoided - as a band director, this stuff is too close to me. I've always hated these videos where people slam these groups, and you made the great point that people have NO IDEA what a school/band program is going through. Director switches, bad admins, s**t budgets, tragedies within the student body, so many things could be happening that we don't see. I'd also bet that some of these groups are bands that were just started at their schools, and may be full of beginners. And behind all of it is a group of students and teachers just trying to do their best. Thanks for spreading positivity!
@ryanfrancisco1795 жыл бұрын
Glad to see band directors are seeing this video. The band I’m in also suffers from a bad budget distributed to us by the student body treasurer and our district administrators, so a huge portion of our funds that allow us to go to events is fundraised throughout the entire school year. There’s little to no downtime in my band where there isn’t a fundraiser happening, and everyone puts a ton of time and effort into it, but nobody catches wind of it so we still get the short end of the stick with the budget. It’s frustrating when your department puts in so much work, and it doesn’t get the funding or support it needs to excel further, it’s a school to nurture talent for crying out loud!

Politics about killed our school's band program. Somehow they hired the laziest guy to replace the retiring director over a much better alumni candidate. And so the decline began. When you have bandmembers BEGGING for more challenging music, there's an issue. When summer "marching" band practices are held SITTING under trees for the majority of rehearsals, there's a problem. When the director himself is morbidly obese, there's a problem. When the music is so DUMBED down, even non-musical audience members notice, there's a problem. When administration continues to keep this slob employed and the bar is lowered to the ground, there's a problem. The alumni candidate went on to lead another marching band to such greatness, I can only shake my head at the stupidity (or the "let's hire the principal's nephew, cousin, etc." mentality) of the district. This comment is coming from someone who benefitted from the retiring director, who set that bar HIGH!

Underfunding is already a big deal for schools in general, and music and arts programs probably get the shortest end of an already short stick. Impacts practice time, instrument quality, class size and all of that. It's tragic really, though it is nice to see bands like that making the most of it.

Very few people who have never been in a Marching Band has NO idea how difficult it is. Memorising several pieces of music, learning all the steps you MUST hit at exact spots, staying in step and doing it ALL in front of sometimes, huge audiences. ANY time a mistake is made there is NO way to hide it! The pressure of Marching Band is immense, whether in HS, College or Professional DCs. I admire any person that has the GUTS to put themselves out there for ALL in attendance to see and hear. I had the privilege of being in a 200 member HS Band that won many State and National Awards (Trophies)....even if it was um...over 40 yrs ago lol. I even became a Drum Major and Head Drum Major in HS and College. Those years were some of the best and most fun I ever had. Contrary to belief, not every Band Member is a nerd lol. The scholars from McAdams put themselves out there despite having instruments in poor condition and being beginners. That took courage, and they earn my respect and kudos. We had a similar situation with a beginner band at one of our competitions. One thing we noticed was they also had little parental support probably because the parents had to work. We cheered for that band as loudly as we cheered for our own. These scholars deserve praise not insults!

The first band is in my state. In a very rural and economically poor area. Many programs in my state at smaller schools are critically underfunded. As in $10 could be difference between them going to evaluation or not. I went through a program that went from the 1st video to performing at a superior level in less than 5 years. It's very hard to secure any sort of stability in my state unless you are a massive 6A school. Those guys are from the one of the smallest category of school in my state (less than 250 people in the whole school)
@DJ_1073 жыл бұрын
3:42 That actually happened to my school’s marching band, our director got mad that he didn’t get a certain job at the school and proceeded to quit and take the staff with him. The band didn’t practice at all during the summer and had 1 week to memorize the whole shows music for band camp. They had a competition in 2-3 weeks and still hadn’t learned drill bc our school had to find new staff members and our busses would break down a lot as well. That year we were moved up to the highest division in the state for the 2016 season (we got dead last but we would’ve placed 2nd in small school 2 if we never moved up) the director went to another band near us. Their band was in small school 3 and we were bumped back down to small school 2 where we bounced back with a 2nd place finish in 2017 (my rookie season). His band got first that year in small school 3. They were bumped up to small school 2 for the 2018 season and we go on to place first in small school 2 while they place dfl. 2019 we placed first again while they came in 2nd (we were up 2 points on them too) now it’s 2021 my senior season and we are now back in small school 1, our home show was last weekend and we scored a 90.35, championships are this weekend and we’re currently in 2nd place in small school 2 while our old director is in 2nd place in small school 2. To think he would’ve won 2 championships and have success in the highest division if he didn’t try to implode our band for his own personal interests.

the first video is a school in my district of small schools. Around the past few years they have little to NO band anymore. I am the percussion captain for the only other high school in the district, We went down to McAdams for a football game back in october-ish, the band had a cadence that was well-ok and they played pep stuff but, they wont march on the field anymore (maybe cause of the competition). I went over and met the new band and the player, They have maybe around 10-14 people and its 35-40% battery percussion. They are all sweet and are only playing for fun and not for scholarships as far as I know. So seeing the video from 2010, and re looking at it, you can realize their path is bright and I expect them to be a full band by 2025.

(Also an add on, if you have electronic instrumentation like synth, Sound system setup) P.S: Learned the hard way, you should always ALWAYS arrange chords after performances/rehearsals, and shut down the Laptop (for MIDI synths. (Me learning the laptop was during rehearsals, me during chords, during a performance.. Luckily we were the host band an were placed under exhibition bands. Took 1 minute after "Is your ensemble ready" for me to push that first sample and start the show. Embarrassing. The crowd cheered though. That was during prelims. Finals, everything was PERFECT. (Prelims: Should've gotten a score of 50) (Finals: 94) We were being scored, but we weren't competing. So, 94 on our first performance, excellent. And besides, we have 20 people in our pit section, a VERY large amount. Also, in our band administration/conference (I think that's how you put it) added a Class A marching band with 1 single snare for percussion. think they did really good for their first ever competitive season. They never been to competitions before, and I think they started out super well. They had a good story, and that's what competitive marching bands should have. A story. What are the props for? What is the drill? What does the show symbolize? Relaxing, Sci-Fi, Energetic, Swing, Classical?

Videos like those are one of the reasons I have so much difficulty getting my Jr. High students to actually participate in music class. They're terrified that their classmates will make fun of their voice, mistakes, etc. They're still developing their abilities. Don't scare them away from even trying.

Lol how do you guys do that? My band is lucky enough to always have access to the football field when we need it and we recently had a reverse parade where we stay in place and cars drive by, and we could barely even get into our block right.

As a band director that has intentionally taken less than stellar situations, I admire you for this effort. You are absolutely correct, you do not know what adversity a band has to cope with.

4 of our 6 directors left, and this year we have 4 brand new directors including a brand new head director, yet we still made finals in TEXAS area, al though we got last in finals, I couldn’t be more proud of my band

My sophomore year, we went to area competition with a 14 member band. We were one point away from going to state. It was the first time in school history that the band made it to finals. Never judge a book by its cover, and always appreciate the extra work that small bands have to put in just to be considered on the same level as bigger schools.

Im In marching band. Covid completely killed our marching band. With the old band director leaving and because most people in the marching band pre-covid graduated we had to start from ground 0 again. We used to be really good and have about 100 students participating in the band. Now we only have about 40 people. Its hard to re-establish a program without knowing anything about how it used to work. Because our program is new again we get basically no funding from the school either, so we have to rely on donations and our band director paying out of pocket for things like new drum heads, buses, competition fees, and completely new color guard uniforms. (as the old color guard uniforms were fitted to the old color guard members.) Its been tough but our marching band is slowly growing and figuring things out. Sadly I will not be at my school next year to be in the marching band when it is more established.

Update on the Mcadams High School Band. After doing some extensive research I managed to find the results for when they competed at the same contest in 2011 and they did a tiny bit better but were definitely not the best. After that they never competed again at any competition even in Concert Band. As of now they no longer have a band program or if they do it’s very hidden especially since the school website doesn’t even mention it.

Thank you so much for pointing out that they never tell ya that there's no funding/ proper director/ support when they enter the field... my first "real" teaching gig was 3rd outta 3 bands the whole first year... AND the second year (technically, we had better marching scores...) but the 3rd year (3rd times a charm?!) We actually swept both major small school ranks in our state for brass, flag and drums. Took a second overall for concert band the following year... we FINALLY got funding approved for new uniforms - AND DRUMS! whoo - what a ride...

this is making me realize how HUGE my schools marching band is, everyone in the band program in grades 10-12 is required to do it so we can’t compete (since it’s a class and u have to do it lol), but that means we have around 200 people and we still get to do half time shows, pep band, and a fourth of july parade and stuff like that so it’s pretty cool. our head director was a section leader for the U of M marching band, hes rly good at writing drill and is a great teacher so we usually look pretty good. we have a winter drumline that goes to comps but unfortunately barely anyone signs up for it (last year it consisted of nine people). we also don’t have a color guard but two girls who twirl perform during one of the pieces from our set at halftime lol

Oh boy. The comments are not getting it. Guys, stop revealing band names and “Spilling Tea” on these bands. Stop commenting things like “ omg me and my fiend used to watch these and die because it was so bad.” That’s not the point of the vid. No more hate for these bands. They tried, even that is a plus, and as Eric said in the video, you don’t know what their going through. Come on guys, be positive.

When it's an academic institution no holds are barred. If you suck, you suck. As someone who's attending what is quite possibly the worst academic institution for music in North America, it's super frustrating when the dean is trying to shutdown your program and refuses to hire professors to replace retired ones.

This is so wholesome and I'm actually going to cry edit: ok actually tho my dad does the exact thing that that kid in the third video did, except with my marching band. Either this kid is insecure because his own band is being made fun of, or he's like my dad and genuinely does *not* understand how difficult this can be and is antagonizing a sibling or friend that participates in it. Our band placed top 20 at BOA San Antonio, however, so it's easier to dismiss these accusations. I couldn't imaging being in a smaller school with a wavering budget or less attention to the arts and having to deal with the same disrespect. It's highly upsetting, and I'm glad you're debunking these in the way you are. It's nice to see some positivity on the internet.

I found a comment that I posted on this video 4 years ago: "As an educator in this activity, I see this as a monumental failing in the music education system. Students in this activity are a tabula rasa for qualified instructors and teachers to mold and build technically proficient and well-versed musicians. These are kids are doing their best, of the instruction that has been provided to them. We shouldn't shame them for trying. Surely they must get some sort of joy out of doing marching band. Clearly, judging by the instruments and location of the school, this is a lower-income high school. The equipment they have isn't up to standards, and I'm sure outside instruction (someone other than the band director) is pretty much non-existent. I would find it likely that they don't have a battery tech, a horn line tech (or multiple), a guard instructor, etc... Regardless, they are involved in something bigger than themselves that provides them opportunities to learn life lessons. Let's not make fun of these students for our perception of their quality of performance." Thanks for making this video and heading up this!

I'm happy addressed the first video and I hate the comments were turned off because I feel the same way. I remember playing in a young, low member, 2A HSMB and it wasn't easy. Covering 50yds with 50 members. I remember the snickers at competitions. Our own school didn’t respect us. But we grew together and became an over 1 band at competitions that dominated our division on the field, and in the stands we would make the the other bands pack up their instruments and bow out. We gain confidence and supported each and thats when we earned respect from EVERYONE. SHS Red Raider pride! Good times❤❤❤

I just announced my first of three shows this year and there are certainly shows that have cringe-worthy moments, but as I remind the audience at every show, ALL of these kids put in a ton of time and effort to put that product on the field and deserve a round of applause. If, IF, we are going to trash anything about these shows (and I’m not about that) then the instructors may need to be taken to task. I’ve seen some pretty bad instructors who are just there for the paycheck. All of these kids deserve the full attention and effort of the instructors. Keep up the good work on this channel.

Eric, I 100% agree with your direction you took here. For anyone to post this kind of negativity...even for click bait...is 100% wrong. We have too many opportunities each day to decide to focus on the good. I have not checked on the "Operation Reverse the Worst" but how is it going? What can an individual do to help in this large scale situation short of simply work to put good comments and encouragement out there for any all of these type of things? Again, I appreciate what you're doing here. Keep up the great work and lastly, thank you for your service in our US military. To not only serve but play in the Commandant's Own is HUGE and you earned it.

I grew up in the county where mcadams school is. I went to the bigger city school (Kosciusko) and was in the band. The whole county only has about 20k people. Mcadams is a very small community and the school (7-12 grades) only has about 100 students, so practically the whole high school is in the band and very little resources. So your comment about knowing the back story is spot on!
